My comment was aimed mostly at the "Star is Born" and singer/model/actor/presenter/celebrity culture of which Ska'at is representative, Ska'at is simply not a good singer (he also vanished from the media some time ago). It is indeed a college presentation, but even as such it is not a very good one.
About the range issue, many great performers has no range, but they are aware of that and simply don't go beyond their capabilities or are backing themselves with other singers.
To me, Skaat is a good singer. At his best, there is a pleasant flowing sound to his voice, which I like. You seem to define good singers as those who are technically good, but this is not nearly enough to make someone a good singer. Also not all great performers or great singers stay within their capabilities. Remember Aretha Franklin singing Nessun Dorma. So cut Harel some slack, Cracker Jack. Next you'll be criticizing his singing on TV when he was 6 years old.
Original production (which I was lucky to see on stage) featured Avi Toledano as Marius. Now, Ska'at has nice vocals, good enough for a "Star is Born", but not good enough for this song. This is a strong song to be performed by a strong performer. Ska'at is not half the singer Toletano was, he has no range, too much vibrato and his mimics are horrible (notice 2:08 to 2:22), Marius lost all his friends and lost his cause, he is supposed to be mourning and depressed, not horrified.
The thing is that while I haven't heard a Toledano song that I really like, there are several songs that Skaat sings that I like. So it doesn't matter to me who technically has the better voice. My favorite version of this song is by Michael Ball.
For some reason my other reply did not go through so I will repeat the gist of it again. First it's a bit unfair to compare Skaat's performance, which was done while he was in college to that of a seasoned veteran. It's good for what it is. You also write Skaat has NO range. This is a gross overstatement (Bob Dylan has no range OK) and it really hurts your credibility. Finally you suggest that this song is to be sung only in a certain way and I disagree.
just lovely
