The biggest problem with DEW gear is that the vaporised material make the beam scatter. Making the Directed Energy Weapons a poor choice on a larger scale than a few microns large rays. Not mentionning that no matter how much "ion" you could pack up in a stream, it wouldnt do anything much more than destabilyse atomic bonds, ultimately only "liquefying" matter. Also, you cannot create energy or store if indefinitely, hence creating a practical barrier to how much pack a DEW can give.

How about replacing the gunship with an imperial star destroyer? Sure it'd have to be very high up, but it could fire lasers that use the grenade explosion effects and damage but you'd be able to hide from it since it cannot move around the map (it'd be miles up) which should give it some balance.
