I never really did like Jack's character but this is in the top 2 of my favorite scenes of the entire series of LOST. The other is in season 6 where Ben pleads with Illana.
I'll tell you why I think this is a powerful scene for Jack. He is confident and ready to lead his people into the jungle and protect them at all costs. Half a scene later, when Sawyer says, "Tell him that he's a better Doctor then he'll ever be," Jack reverts to a child. Head down, vulnerable and unsure in a split second. That is acting.
It's moments like this that show how wonderful and iconic LOST was...at times it didn't even feel like acting, and Jack never fails to make me bawl my eyes out...He was so haunted by his father, and to see him come full circle in the last episode and get that meeting with him..That closure, was beautiful to watch....I will never forget this show and Michael Giacchino's music <33
A wonderful scene...how often did Sawyer ever call Jack by his first name? It reveals a major breakthrough in the Sawyer character: some sensitivity and even humanity. This moment also revealed them to be friends as well as rivals. Both actors do some of their best work here- and this is just season 1!!
Some say you don't choose your love. This scene makes me think sometimes you don't even choose your friends... you're just kinda stuck with them, period. Sawyer and Jack are stuck together, no matter the differences, Kate, rivalry. Even if it's hard, twisted and annoying for both of them. Love the scene.
This is the best scene in LOST as far as I'm concerned. It makes me cry every time I see it. It makes me think of my Dad and it rings true. Thank you to the writers and actors of LOST for making me feel.
why does everyone connect wit this scene so much? Why are we so emotionally connected to this scene - after all, most people are not doctors nor are their parent(s). I enjoyed this scene, too, but I am struggling to articulate why....this extends to the whole show... Are these thoughts worldly or just plain wordy?
It was when the show was still fresh and creative, near the end it got sloppy and LOST direction. Is that why we like this scene so much.....
@kappelmeister123 you are dead inside if you dont see how this scene is so great. It's not about being a doctor, It's about the relationship between a son and his father. If you don't get that then maybe you've never had diversity in your live...or maybe youre so jaded you don't have a soul....
@kappelmeister123 because every man wants to hear something from their father that they never said and its a huge moment for jack he thought his dad died hating him and sawyer told him probably the thing he wanted hear more than anything because even tho jack and his father had problems jack idolized him that prob why he became a docter or more specificly a spinal surgeon if you care about the care and can relate to them in some parts you feel how gd must have felt to hear that
One of the most emotional scenes ever on television.

well if no one heard jacob speak b4 and we have already seen jacob b4 season 5..im guessing jacob is aaron...thats y it was so vital not to return him 2 the island......oh n jacks never been the man...all about the sawyer meat 4 me!
god it feels like just yesterday i started watching LOST (I watched it all over the summer). This is prob my favorite and the best moment in lost history.
I think it's really cute when sawyer tells jack he "screwed" ana lucia and jack asks him why he is telling him that and sawyer says "cos your about the closest thin i've got to a friend."
It makes sense if Jacob is Jack, similar names, they're both "leaders", they hang with their relatives. What I believe is that when the world ends, the Island is the last safe place on Earth. Jack goes back in time, and fluctutates between time and space transmuting him into Jacob, a type of non real character, almost like a ghost.
He goes back in time, even in biblical reference times to change the outcome of the world.
I read a blog on what your talking about. Send me a message if you haven't read the Jacob jack thing anywhere, the blog mentions something about the 4 toes statue. I wont give it away here. Anyways I'll just add that, Jacob is actually a hebrew name for James "Sawyers real name"
it doesnt make sense.......if jacob is jack how come jack wants to leave and jacob just wanna move the island and christian just brought claire for some reason if it was some "relative" thing she wouldnt leave Aaron
This is a copy and paste from a google search, The boy's name James also used as girl's name James, is pronounced jayms. It is of English origin. Variant of Jacob (Hebrew) "he who supplants". Biblical: one of the 12 apostles of Jesus..
My name is James : ) I thought for a minute I was wrong about the origin of the name haha. Interesting anyway. Im going to look into this yaakov name : ) Sayer is turning into bit of a leader lately and being stuck in the past gives him extra knowledge : )
Ooh, sorry! I didn't see your comment about it being Henry Gale! Yeah, we haven't heard him speak!! I thought it could be Aaron with the whole time moving thing, cos he COULDN'T speak, but we have heard him now, when he's older so..yeah..
Not many tv scenes make me cry but this one is one of them. If you have stuck with Lost through the current 4 seasons then you'll know a lot about the characters and Sawyer and Jack didn't get on well in the first season and this was probably the first time that Sawyer really made amends for his attitude. It is so touching that he made sure Jack knew that is Dad was sorry for everything and that before he died he wanted more than anything to get back in touch. Really beautiful scene.
yeah i think so and another is the one locke was crying on the hatch and sayin "i've done every thing u want me to do so why did u do this, why?" this one is better and made me almost cry,
search as "The Hatch lights up" i bet u'll probably agree!!!
And Jack is my favorite character on the show. I can really relate to him and his perfectionist nature. I've got the Jack action figure, and I proudly press the button to make it say "If we can't live together...we're going to die alone."
I've already commented on this, but I a lot of times when I'm down I think of this scene. Probably my favorite in TV history. If it doesn't get to you, you really don't have a heart. In any context, this is amazing.
That's not even mentioning the way he totally killed that scene where Claire is revealed to be his sister. Again like in Exodus, he managed to take a *known* fact to the audience and process the reveal in such a way that the *known* became an *unknown* all over again!
I'm telling ya, if you get beyond the Jack hate, you might find yourself appreciating some of Fox's work. I get he might take up screen time over other "cooler" characters, but there is more to MF than his purported "Jackfaces"!
Fox sometimes has a tendency to overdo it but he's great at selling the big scenes and his scenes are usually the ones that stay with me - the CPR scene with Charlie, identifying his dad in White Rabbit, his nuanced performance in Do No Harm when he finally rats on his dad, his whole interaction with Sarah in MOS/MOF, his numerous showdowns with Locke and that's not even mentioning TTLG - imo one of the most powerfully evocative performances ANY lead has given on ANY show.
SavedByTheCarver - it's entirely subjective as to whether you think he is surrounded by better actors b/c apart from O'Quinn and Emerson, I can't think of anyone better to be honest.

Also, of the main cast, I think Fox is one of the less actors. I'm not meant to hate the main character but I do. And I hate the Jack faces. And, gah. I just think for the main star it's strange how he is surrounded by better actors. And it annoys me that guys like O'Quinn and Emerson are considered "supporting" actors. Pfft. Fox could learn something from them. He did well here though, and he has his moments.
i thought he was NEVER going to tell Jack about his father but he did which was so awesome of Sawyer. Season was all about character development, Locke is my fav, the stories he tells about his life and how they connect with his friends on the Island is just awesome.
Yeah, seemed like after Jack realized there were mutual feelings growing between Sawyer and Kate, Jack seemed to go straight back to square one and pulling all kinds of alpha male crap with him. Sad. Jack's loss IMO, not Sawyer's.
great great scene. I have played this back countless times. Such emotion!! When I first saw it, I have to admit, I did cry for a few moments. These two have a great on screen presence and work very well together. I just LOVE their scenes together. LONG LIVE LOST!!!!!
MattPatProductions - I disagree; this scene actually proved to me that MF is the best dramatic actor on that show. The emotion was so palpable - you can actually *feel* every flicker of sentiment in his facial expressions. Hands down the best crier on TV and hands down the best dramatic actor on Lost. May not be everyone's cup of tea but he always SELLS the big moments and I am flabbergasted that the man has yet to be recognised professionally for his work (Emmy wise)
Possibly my number one Lost scene of all time. Matthew Fox proves you don't have to say anything to act, and it's 100% Josh Holloway's best bit of acting he's done. Brilliant.
Season one of this show freaking rocks! The writing and the acting was just awesome. I glad that they pretty much used all unknown people at the time, at least they were unknown to me. I like to see any of these twenty million a movies celebrities try to act out these scenes.
My favorite moment in the show...This scene really got to me the first time I watched it and still does. Seeing Sawyer and Jack connect is great, and the way Sawyer tells the story can only be told in his words. I love this scene and I love this show.
Sawyer: [pause] Jack! About a week before we all got on the plane I got to talking to this man in a bar in Sydney. He was American, too. A doctor. I've been on some benders in my time, but this guy he was going for an all time record. It turns out this guy has a son his son's a doctor, too. They had some kind of big time falling out. The guy knew it was his fault even though his son was back in the States thinking the same damn thing.
Jack: [starts to recognize who Sawyer's talking about]
Sawyer: See, kids are like dogs, you knock them around enough they'll think they did something to deserve it. Anyway, there's a pay phone in this bar. And this guy, Christian... tells me he wishes he had the stones to pick up the phone, call his kid, tell him he's sorry, that he's a better doctor than he'll ever be he's proud and he loves him. I had to take off, but something tells me he never got around to making that call.
This is definately my favorite scene from LOST of all time. Theres nothing like this momentary connection shared between these two unlikely characters, and Jack's response is pure poetry. Thankfully, season 4 of Lost of looking to be almost as good, quite redeeming.
I agree with everyone here. When talking about the current season, it's plain that (while the show is still very good) it doesn't have the powerful character interplay that the first season had. This moment is poignant because of everything that led to it and the feeling of, "Please TELL him, Sawyer!" that we all felt as Jack walked away. When he said, "Jack!" it was a burst of elation for us and redeption for him. Fox's silent response is beautiful. Simply the best.
i'd forgotten about this, but its actually, i think, one of the best scenes in Lost, ever, Its beautiful. And I'm so glad Sawyer told him. I wish they could be friends.
I think they are friends, I actually think their relationship with each other is much more interesting than either them have with Kate in a way. I think they have a respect for each other, an understanding. There will probably always be a rivalry a little though.
This is one of my favourite moments from Lost, it's such a shame that people are always pitting these two against each other when they are both great characters in their own right, with one of the most interesting relationships in Lost. I dont think one would work as well without the other.
I don't like Matthew Fox but he is a very good actor

I agree with you on Mathew Fox. He's not the best actor on the show, but he is very close. :)

Possibly my number one Lost scene of all time. Matthew Fox proves you don't have to say anything to act, and it's 100% Josh Holloway's best bit of acting he's done. Brilliant.

fox is not a great actor but he did this scene well.

Season one of this show freaking rocks! The writing and the acting was just awesome. I glad that they pretty much used all unknown people at the time, at least they were unknown to me. I like to see any of these twenty million a movies celebrities try to act out these scenes.

Interesting that they use Charlie's heroic/redemption theme for this scene.

My favorite moment in the show...This scene really got to me the first time I watched it and still does. Seeing Sawyer and Jack connect is great, and the way Sawyer tells the story can only be told in his words. I love this scene and I love this show.

Jack: Yeah, I guess it is. Good luck, Sawyer.

Sawyer: Small world, huh?
Jack: [unable to hold back tears] Yeah...
Sawyer: Good luck, Jack.

This is definately my favorite scene from LOST of all time. Theres nothing like this momentary connection shared between these two unlikely characters, and Jack's response is pure poetry. Thankfully, season 4 of Lost of looking to be almost as good, quite redeeming.

Thank you for posting.

I wish they could be friends.
juicyluce29 4 years ago 4
I'd say they are friends now. They have a bit of a rivalry but I think they classify themselves as friends.
RDawg5555 4 years ago 2
I think they are friends, I actually think their relationship with each other is much more interesting than either them have with Kate in a way. I think they have a respect for each other, an understanding. There will probably always be a rivalry a little though.

This is one of my favourite moments from Lost, it's such a shame that people are always pitting these two against each other when they are both great characters in their own right, with one of the most interesting relationships in Lost. I dont think one would work as well without the other.

Very well said.
