Ahhhh, I LOVE the Count! I got in trouble in kindergarten for counting like him. "One! Two! Three! Four! Five, AH AH AH AH AH!" because it disrupted class.
"No, children, not now! Later. Beat it!" LOL Count, I love him to pieces.
I love the Count's laugh when the mailman leaves-he's all like- "I fooled 'em! HA HA HA HA"- "1"- "2"- "3"! Such a beloved character. I certainly wish they would have a "Best of Count Von Count" DVD. "Elmo Says Boo"-HARDLY scrapes ANY surface of the genius of THE COUNT!
Now THE COUNT is way more hip than any "sparkly" vampire....
How ANYONE could choose Elmo over this master of "numerical hijinks" is a crime! Count Von Count doesn't "act" like a vampire-only the Hollywood archetype popularized by our favorite "bat man"-Bela Lugosi!
This takes me baaaack! I was six I think when I saw this, must've been about when it was first aired. Count von Count was one of my faves-- and he didn't scare me, I thought he was funny! I didn't know he was purple back then because we didn't have a color TV until just in time for the Bicentennial.
it's called being P.C. these days and softening things up. No more elmer and bugs, everyone gets a trophy, we don't keep score etc. we are killing our culture slowly
The count used to scare me too when I was little. I think if is hilarious now! I guess a lot of other kids were afraid too because the count got quite tame after this.
The count of today looks like he's had a makeover .. he looks cleaned up .. haha! but he is still my favourite character .. so many years later he is still my favourite ..its that laugh .. the only difference with sesame st nowadays is that it no longer has the humour that it used to have ..which is why the 70s and 80s episodes can be enjoyed by all ..
Well, isn't this a true masterpice?? The music, the count's lair with all those wonderful bats, the mailman and his sarcastic dialogues... and the pile of letters, some of them even via air mail...
Wonderful Ha Ha Ha (Thunder)
By the way, he was indeed scary because he was freaking NUTS!!! XD
I wonder what it'd be like if the Scooby-Doo gang ever came across Count von Count? I know for sure Count von Count would be the "creepy suspect" that turns out to be real and innocent, but there would also be a fake monster that would be the criminal.
but that was the idea right? i mean when i was a kid i loved this kind of things because they were showed as good things rather being bad and such i mean life has both sides the creepy and softy, so teaching kids that the dark things were good too was a nice thing to do.
I couldn't agree with you more about the count being a lot scarier in 1972 than today! I saw this skit for the first time in 1974 when I was 3 years old. I was watching SS downstairs, while my mom was upstairs cleaning, paying bills etc and after seeing that video, I always feared of the count coming down the stairs in my house to scare me away! YIKES!
I had a Count doll in the late seventies at about that age and it scared the crap out of me, because it sat at the top of the stairs, being a creep. I made my mom throw it out, but she only pretended to. I haven't ever really forgiven her. . .
It's funny how "The Count" said from 2:07-2:09 that he doesn't have any friends when on other skits he talks to a lot of people, muppets, and monsters and has great conversations with them like they're all his friends. Unless, "The Count" is still brand new at this time to Sesame Street where he is still trying getting to know people, muppets, and monsters. So maybe he didn't quite make a friend yet at this time which could be the reason why he said from 2:07-2:09 that he doesn't have friends
I agree. It was very scary. It's also very strange that "The Count" is a vampire but, he usually doesn't act like one but here, he is acting like a vampire, (probably the only skit where he acts like a vampire). At 0:56, he said "greetings" like a vampire when he usually doesn't talk like that or say "greetings." Usually he would say "hello" and talk fast like a human would. Instead here on this skit, he talks like a vampire would. Plus at the end, his laugh was just like a vampire laugh.
I've seen a few later 1980s/1990s-era skits where he addresses people with "Greetings" as well. Also, note that even though he enjoys sunlight, does not drink blood and cannot turn into a bat, he still has NO reflection, like a vampire would!
Yes. I know that there is another skit where "The Count" first appeared on Sesame Street which was the skit where he met Cookie Monster for the first time. (That was also the first skit "The Count" was on). In that skit, "The Count" did say "Greetings" to the audience but, he said it a little faster and not like a vampire. However, his laugh at the end of the skit sounded like a vampire laugh, and as he walked away off screen, he put his cape on his face and zoomed away like a vampire.
afriendofbean: Well, Count Von Count has arithnomania--an obessive love of counting--which is based in true vampire mythos. As well, his laugh, cape-around-face walk, and and manner of speaking are all derived from Bela L. acting as that other famous Count...Count Dracula.
I grew in the philippines with sesame street where i learned probably my basics in english. i remember not wanting to get up from bed because i was so scared count might be by my bedroom door.
i always love the count. i dont know why i just was not scared of him tha ti remember. i especially loved the way he moved and called the bats his pets and children. love the count. him and kermit rule
When I was a little girl, the first time I heard that laugh at the end I ran out of the room screaming. Seriously, some parts of the show freaked me out as a kid for no reason, LOL
"why would u want to read a bunch of letters you wrote to yourself"? "No I am not going to read them, I am going to count them" Hahahaha !!!!! so funny lol!!!!
Hmm... I'm starting to realize just how frightening The Count is. Not because of his vampirism (which we never see), but because he's freakin' NUTS. O_O
It's so funny that the count was all "I wrote these letters myself... I am not going to read them though... I am going... to COUNT them." Honestly, I don't know quite how the nice people in the white jumpsuits missed the guy.
i wish the new sesame street still had good skits with a creepy count, super grover, waiter grover and those classic ernie and bert skits. they were awesome!!
The mailman is kind of in Johnathan Harker's position. Luckily this is a childrens' show...
Still, does anyone think it's odd that the Count is a 15th century Eastern European aristocrat who lives in an ancient, ruined castle, even though Sesame Street takes place in the the City of New York
Are you serious? Parents should teach their kids cartoons/puppets? aren't real and should teach them not to answer the door, if the parents let the kids learn from this crap then that's bad parenting, not the tv show's fault.
I love how people think that kids are so stupid that if they see a person on television (and an adult character, mind you) open the door and let someone into their house that children will immediately try to do the same thing.
Are you suggesting that children should never be allowed to see someone answer the door on television? Seriously, answer that question. And why do people assume that young children are complete morons? Because they're not.
TheTatter: If children weren't morons, then they wouldn't buy into the corporate drivel being put in front of them (i.e. wouldn't demand glory-hogging Elmo be on the last 15 minutes of the show). But, because they do and because parents encourage it, things will continue to spiral down until entertainment crumbles or until people wise up, whichever comes first.
TherealRNO: Are you suggesting that Sesame Street is corporate drivel? I mean really...this isn't the Disney channel we're talking about, it's frigging Sesame Street. I mean, I don't really like Elmo either, but I don't see how the leader in non-profit childrens educational television amounts to corporate anything...
No reflection in the mirror...but no kid would have known that was a vampire joke! If I were that mailman, I'd have been running scared at the first creak of the door!
The Count could be the best supervisor the post office ever had. After all, he probably counted the letters as he wrote them in the first place, so he can tell how many the PO lost! LOL!
I appriciate the Count so much more than I ever did as a kid. Does anyone remember the one where he counts the candles he puts out and he steps on his cat and tells his wolf to go outside?

thats right, teach kids to open the door to people you don't know and let them across the threshhold of your house.
Ipetratz 4 years ago

OH MY GOSH.
No reflection in the mirror...but no kid would have known that was a vampire joke! If I were that mailman, I'd have been running scared at the first creak of the door!

The Count is just hilarious, and this skit is a perfect example. I love the kick he gets out of counting the letters.

The Count could be the best supervisor the post office ever had. After all, he probably counted the letters as he wrote them in the first place, so he can tell how many the PO lost! LOL!

gosh the count's so much cooler then than he is now. bar none

It's a bloody shame what they did to him now. They might as well have yanked out his fangs!
Balloons and confetti, how sad and demoralizing can you get?

I appriciate the Count so much more than I ever did as a kid. Does anyone remember the one where he counts the candles he puts out and he steps on his cat and tells his wolf to go outside?
leia5899 4 years ago
I vaguely remember that one, it's been around 30 years or so since I've seen the good Count skits.

Okay, three of my favorite Sesame Street characters: Grover, Cookie Monster, and, you got it, the Count.
