why is it these old John Deeres sound like they are missing a beat. Are they wired like the old harleys and fire on compression as well as exhaust stroke?
Just the nature of the engine. To balance the engine one piston will be at TDC while the other will be at BDC.
However when laid out like this its impossible to have them fire evenly. When cyl 1 is firing, cyl 2 is coming up on compression, cyl 1 exhausts while cyl 2 fires. Cyl 1 intakes while 2 exhausts. 1 then goes through compression when 2 is on the intake stroke.
Basically 2 fires right after 1. The long gap between 2 firing and 1 firing again is the lope you hear.
@taylortownmayor ,correct. Some pullers have a new crank and cam made to where both pistons are in phase and thus fire evenly with better power pulses. This is the same set-up as with the old 2 cyl. Wisconsin engines. Later, Rick.
I'd say it is a mid 30s D... It also has a styled intake pipe. If it had the foot brake and shutters it would be a 37 or later. I'd be interested in knowing the serial number...
Funny, this guy has to rubber up instead of chain up. Neat old tractor!

American traktors are not good. =/ German machines are super!

@TheLecker1 You're an idiot.

@TheLecker1 Never had one american tractor break or loose power, inported tractors suck as German ones however...

! like how they make little rings of smoke from the exhaust.

Thank you ...makes sense when you think about it.

Yeah and the air and exhaust stacks aren't raised.

FYI: a spoker D has a spoked flywheel the normal D had a solid flywheel

as well as only 12 spokes on the rear wheel.
