I was just at the grocery store (of all places) and i happened to see a dvd of this for only $5.99 so I snagged it, and I was about to buy one on Amazon for like $10 the other day. The best part, I brought it home and popped it in, it's the original version without Bowie!!!
I've always loved this cartoon. You know, I've never noticed before - when Santa gives the boy his present, you can see that his name is James, and he's from Brighton. I don't remember if they gave him a name in the "Father Christmas" cartoon that's supposed to take place this same night...only it's from Santa's viewpoint as he stops at the Snowman Party, and James (apparently) and his snowman inform him that he's forgotten a present.
@darksilverdreams I was always under the impression that this was a year or two after as father Christmas says to the boy something along the lines of "Glad you make it again. The party I mean, not your snowman" implying he's been making his snowman each year since and going to the party :) My little girl was so upset when snowman melted but felt much better when she saw father Christmas and realised he came back year after year :)
As a kid the ending made me sad, but never ruined it for me or deprived me of any sleep. In fact it's an important lesson. Good things come into your life, and they might leave, but the experience stays with you forever. I think a lot of people seriously doubt what kids can and can't handle.
@Blazethunderhawk If you're spoiled and overprotected/mollycoddled.. then that's a different story I think. I know someone who thinks everyone in life is a good Samaritan.. oh poor poor she.. she doesn't know how the world is..
The ending's cut out! The last part is written in major, and only then does he notice he still has the scarf, implying that it was not a dream. I think that would make it a happy ending, don't you think?
@beatles1082 You got that right when I was about 5, I put this on, when the end came on, I literally broke down! And all I would talk about for days was the 'poor snowman' and the 'poor boy'. Lol!
8:35, here's the perfect song to go with it: watch?v=F07HbfgzpG8

The ending would always make me cry when I was little. It is like the snowman died. =(

I think the music is a major part of the animation.
1) It creates its own atmosphere
2) without it, I wouldn't be crying when the snowman disappeared
