can never get to these concerts, im in FL and dont have the money, wondering if you and others have worked on pieces that deals with the education of 6 mallet pieces, i have worked on it but dont know any good pieces, and also to your question, yes, i always deal with finding a new piece after i finished a previous one, both two and four mallet
Thanks for the comment! I think these pieces will be a bit more challenging that early beginner works but I know they will all be great works musically.
I totally agree that there is not enough repertoire for the intermediate marimba player. I've also been looking for more beginner level pieces for students for quiet some time. I don't know if anyone if familiar with the McMillan book "Percussion Keyboard Technic," but I've been looking for a four-mallet version of this. Essentially I'm looking for a book with half page or shorter etudes that can be given to a student with the expectation that they can actually learn it in one week.
Hope to meet you at ZMF this summer! Looking forward to seeing the impact this new rep will have on our instrument. I predict the impact to be monumental! Thanks for the comment and please spread the word about the show!
YES!!! I've found myself on mostly marimba, steveweiss, honey rock and all over the place just listening, trying to find new music. I completely agree that there is not enough repp for the intermediate players and I'm excited about the festival! I'm for sure going to look into it!
Hello. Thank you for your episode here. I'm a percussionist in California and studied with Daniel Kennedy at CSUS. I was exposed to many pieces and I'm always looking for what is new. I've definitely found myself saying "what am I going to discover next...what am going to play?"
I'm now a high school band director and hope to inspire new percussionists to go on studying marimba in their college career. I look forward to seeing the new collection of marimba repertoire. Thank you again!
Always nice to hear from a west coaster! I played with Dan once, I think it was Nebraska somewhere. Please say hi if you see him. I think this collection of rep could be perfect for your more motivated and talented students. Please spread the word about the show, thanks!
Yes. Even as I have played yellow after the rain and raindance, I get to hear our 7 freshmen play it day after day after day. We need more simple elegant music.
I think one of the main reason for this difficulty you mentioned is because a lot of intermediate and above pieces are written for a 5 oct instrument. I've seen it in schools like where I study, where there is only one 5 oct marimba to be share by 11 students daily and three 4.3 marimbas elsewhere. so you only have 1-2 hours each day with the big instrument, and so it puts the students in an awkward situation
...where they have to find a intermediate piece that is of good quality, and at the same time written for a smaller instrument.
And this is especially true for advance pieces as well. This year is my last year for my bachelors program and I thought to myself in the beginning of sept that I want to learn mostly advance marimba pieces this year. But I also want to practice longer hours. with the aforementioned situation at our school, that was impossible as there isn't much repetoire for

@yellind1 Thanks for the comment! Six mallets are hard because no one has really figured out how to use them independently. (just mallet 2, 4 etc..)

...a 4.3 instrument.
So I'm glad the ZMF project is going well as this is, without a doubt, a huge step forward for the marimba to mature as a concert instrument.
Keep up the good work!
