  • Don't care for his interpretation of it much, in fact not a big Horowitz fan. The best I ever heard was Stanislav Neighaus, but it's not on YouTube.

  • Makes me think of Zues on a piano making the world with music.

  • I'm learning "Riders on the storm"... a little easier ;-)

  • great interpretation, but this score really scares me

  • best parts at 1:00 and 2:00

  • @gusbakker ..... Yes, indeed. Horowitz here is INCOMPARABLE !!!!!!

  • This is one "bewildered" video. =p

  • A romantic part of me wonders if Scriabin reincarnated as Horowitz.

  • @iwantoldschool Scriabin died in 1915, And Horowitz was born in 1903, so that would be impossible. Well, despite the fact that reincarnating is impossible.

  • @iwantoldschool LOL....those two couldn't have more different personalities. Please read a little about Skryabin the composer, the dreamer, the visionary, who died so young and such a ridiculous death too. Horowitz was quite a realist, however.

  • This vid went viral on Paraguay

  • Lady gaga has talent for commercial poop, the music here is called art and got nothing to do with her, so let's just not discuss her at all out of respect for Scriabin and Horowitz. The will thank you from heaven. ^_^

  • Scriabin and Rachmaninoff both were taught by the same teachers, I find something oddly familiar about 1:05's left hand:)

  • Fiorentino is different. Much pedal, but still a excellent performance. Horowitz: amazing performance. Clear melody throughout the piece. Great pianist. Like Scriabin etude op.8 nº12. Another amazing performance.

  • watch?v=HHmqN8_u5ZA&feature=related

    Fiorentino is best

  • So much going on at 1:32, yet Horowitz is still able to put such clarity in the middle voice...that is more than amazing O_O

  • simply inspiring.

  • How can 10 fingers do this??? Beautiful, soaring, brilliant!

  • Awesome!

  • There is no such a thing as a perfect rendition, but this comes fucking close.

  • The best part is at 1:57 <3

  • Yes, check out The Poem of Ecstasy and of course Prometheus: The Poem of Fire!

I very much recommend the recordings of Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

  • @MrRrrrvvvv The Poem of Ecstasy! *drool* Everyone listen to that piece if you liked this etude!

  • Lovely playing.TY rmannion for posting

  • This is the essence of Scriabin to me; along with Sonata No.5 and the Piano concerto, but I can't even decide which is better.

  • @jkff3 Essence of Scriabin? The Poem of Ecstasy! Listen to it, please.

  • @titusbeertsen I did, and it's great too :)

  • words cannot describe the greatness of this piece :)

  • To think that such a chaotic mess of notes could sound this beautiful....

Scriabin nailed the meaning of anguish in this one.

I do not know the exact reason as to why Scriabin is not as famous as the other masters, nor why the other masters themselves are, comparatively speaking, ignored today-but even you were to ask them why, they wouldn't know the answer to that either.

  • @chainedliberty hmm, what do you mean by that? That people ignore the great composers in general in favour of crappy pop music, or that certain greats have not acquired the reputation they deserve relative to other composers?

  • @chainedliberty lol it's an acquired taste....

people who are not musically-inclined can generally appreciate Bach's Air in G for example... not so much Liszt, Debussy, etc.

In the end, it is the simple melody, the closure of a perfect cadence, and whatnot whatnot, that makes the most harmonically traditional pieces just that much easier to appreciate by anyone.

"Rules" were there for a reason; the latter composers broke them, and hence lost their appeal to the general population.

  • I think Lane's perfomance is somewhat superior to this... But I think this is the best version of this broodingly dark etude on Youtube...

  • Comment removed

  • Scriabin at it's best. Awesome recording and performance. Thanks for posting.

  • I can't explain why this composer is not so famous like others, this is marvelous!!!

  • 19 people burst into flames at the raw awesomeness of this recording

  • 19 people DO NOT understand music WHATSOEVER.

  • @PeacefulStrife

hey, hey, hey. Disliking this music makes them not understand music at all? I wouldn't have liked this music a year ago, that doesn't make myself of years past musically ignorant. Shut up.

  • @orangefan9 Good point: I mean if you were to start thinking like that where would you draw the line between ignorance and enlightenment? We are, after all, all on a musical journey (crappy cliche included free of charge).

  • so amazing, clear and emotional!

  • and people actually listen to lady gaga when shit like this exists

  • @thunder123bah

    Yeah...you're in the focus point...

I listen and play many kind of music, but this is the one I like the most...piano...romantic with modernish Prokofieff-like spice alopng with some mysticism!

  • @thunder123bah to be fair, gaga's got a ton more talent than most pop stars of today.

  • @thunder123bah Lady Gaga is pretty awesome to me.

  • Comment removed

  • @thunder123bah well i mean cmon no ones pushing Scriabins music that much

  • Comment removed

  • 18 ppl are halfwits

  • the left hand reminds me a bit of Rachmaninov's etude-tableau op 33 no 9 :D

  • Horowitz seems pretty good at playing Scriabin!

  • @tjtheplay Ya think?!

  • I can see where Scribain was heading, cos here he almost meanders, barely and rarely hinting at the key noted - but not with the certainty he begins to find by the 50s, and then realises by opus 65.

  • Not many if any other pianist could pull this performance off. Bravo VH

  • Never again will the world experience the genius of Scriabin or Horowitz, never ...

  • Jesus H Christ ...

  • Whoever took the time to make this video of the score so that we can easily follow - thank you!

  • Some times Horowitz seems to be playing a different instrument from his peers! What a genius!

  • Don't worry guys, those goosebumps will go away in a couple of hours

  • 15 people can go to hell and die

  • Beyond just sounding good, Scriabin was a genius of theory.

  • oh my god. the melody in this piece is mindblowingly good.

  • Played as noone else can - thank you Mr. Horowitz for bringing this passionate and exultant piece to life

  • I know people say this isn't dark and I agree. But I mean come on it's pretty god damn mournful.

  • Although this is a fine performance, he gave an even better one in an early 50s live account at Carnegie Hall.

  • Please for the love of god stop bringing that kids name in every fucking god damn youtube music video I see. He's dead and everybody will eventually forget about him, he will never understand what it feels like to be truly legendary and be able to create music. If you really hate him stop fucking speaking his name then, you're just giving him more attention.

  • like a much more demonic fantasy impromptu op 66 whose power is released only as Horowitz can

  • 1:00-1:06 we'll only encounter that kind of phrasing once in our life time, let's enjoy it and listen to it a million times

  • @klapsikopatiko

    i don't get it.

  • @klapsikopatiko That is unless you listen from 2:12-2:18.

  • @klapsikopatiko Dont overdo it bud.

  • @klapsikopatiko i was thinking THE EXACT SAME THING before i read this.

  • @klapsikopatiko

    And what about 0:00 -1:05, and 1:06 to 3:10

Horowitz is that kind of a extremely superb pianits that only shows up in life every 200 years...

  • Scriabin is absolutely amazing! I especially love the etudes, this is definitely my favourite of the etudes but my favourite Scriabin is in the orchestral music where he can really release his use of colour. I love the third symphony in particular.

  • It's a pity that that boy's name shows up even at this place.

  • @jasonextreme I speak for everyone when I say: delete this comment. you are crossing the troll line and polluting real videos now. its disrespectful and annoying.

  • @EMT22637 Then don't read it.

  • @EMT22637 I actually think this comment is quite funny: This guy is really thinking classical music was written against pop music :D

  • The really melodic part always makes me so sad.

  • wow. firstly i thought "what a chaos" and now i am thinking: what a beautiful, strong, live mess!! i like this cuz it reminds me a very talented person who is always confused and inspired! :)

  • wow this is actually very melodic for this genre, it sounds like chopin got molested by bartok!

  • Thanks for uploading this and with the score too

  • This is my favorite recording of one of my favorite piano pieces of all time. Just wonderful playing... Horowitz captures the spirit of this piece like no other. The Chopinesque writing of Scriabin's early years is there but veiled... when I hear this piece I hear a composer on the brink of insanity and Horowitz seems to feel the same way.

  • Very interesting go together of music and notes! Good idea.

  • OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!

    got completely blown away!!!!!

  • 15 people cant hang...

  • by far the greatest recording of this delightful piece. unbelievable.

  • fuuuuuuuuuuuuck

  • fucking incredible...

  • This reaaly shows the greatness of Horowitz, an incredibly difficult piece played with the uttter lightness and musicality, seems to be done without effort....

  • They're "darkness" is different. Scriabin is more the caothic kind, Rachmaninov is always clear and powerfull. Who is better? Dumb question. Nobody can force us to chose, beside not listening to one of them would be a shame.

  • @TheSwordsweeper

Why is scriabin dark? The vast majority of his work is uplifting. It's filled with masculine energy and an ecstatic sort of insanity.

Reminds me of kafka and how some people think he's a dark writer, but he'd always laugh hysterically when reading is works for others aloud.

  • @dasklavierleben "Estatic sort of insanity", you could call that dark.

  • @TheSwordsweeper Maybe if you're a wusscake.

  • @dasklavierleben Ouch, you broke my heart, mister. =(

  • @TheSwordsweeper Haha, but seriously though...

  • Horowitz's voicing on this piece is amazing.. how is he able to bring out that beautiful melodic line with all those notes in between... amazes me

  • I am afraid to play this piece, but I really want to learn it at the same time! Horowitz has so much control that it makes the idea of taking on this work incredibly daunting.

  • I will cause a wave of emotions and memories indescribable

  • Scriabin was being too modest in calling this piece just an etude

  • mi provoca un'onda di emozioni e di ricordi indescrivibile!

  • Reminds me of Cohen's masterpiece in Bioshock.

  • one is God but does not realize it,but the spirit in us equals God,in that sense there is a pantheist idea..God iss in everything so also in the universe..

  • I'll take Rubenstein for Chopin, Richter for Rach, but Horriwitz's Scriabin is unparalleled. This piece is a wonderful combination of technical proficiency with fiery intensity. A real emotionally gripping piece, which is unusual for an Etude. It's almost a shame as learning this piece, I could never hope to achieve the level of beauty horrowitz creates without directly mimicking his interpretation.

  • Who dislikes this, doesn't understand a bit from music and piano playing!

  • @Starwalker6978 I am sick of people who post insulting comments about people who dislike the piece in question. However, if by telling everyone about how much you dislike the people who disliked the piece you feel you are 'part of the club', or that it disginguises you from the 'plebs'... then keep it up. The people who really care about the music are too busy trying to play it ;-)

  • @0601989m correction: the people who care about the music are too busy trying to learn it, then notice that they lack the 7 hands necessary to play it.

  • @Starwalker6978

That are Lang Lang Fans, lost in the wide space of Youtube. With the thumb down button they think to come back.

  • Sorry message by mistake

  • Hungary rhapsody

  • So dramatic yet so mad and dynamic at the same time...

  • makes me cry. really does.

  • this song looks absoloutly terrifying.

  • Learning this piece right now. Can't wait till I'm finished this piece is amazing, deep, passionate all the above lol. Might be my favorite or at least one of my favorite piano pieces.

  • I think the piano's broken...

  • You know, I've heard this piece dozens of times. But following the sheet music just adds a whole new level of emotional depth to this piece. The notes are like seeds of musical etherealness and splendor, yet so unassuming as they appear on the page. Words fail me.

  • I'm working on this piece but it seems that i will never reach such perfection... it's sublime, sincere and full of passion... Horowitz is my fav

  • OMG!!! How is it possible that one person can play this?

  • @peppersax Magic.

  • @openmindspace Indeed, both the piece and the playing. Horowitz didn't play everything well, but he was phenomenal in Scriabin and this is just one incredible example. It was wonderful to see him playing Scriabin's piano when he went back to Russia that one last time in 1986.

  • horowitz really is EPIC! he can do justice to any piece =)

  • Bravo!Very Good!!

  • The best part was from 3:10 to 0:00 (try listening to it backward; you'll see what I mean).

  • 13 people hate the fact that they won't be able to play this piece...Ever...

  • @JamesTR4 780 people love the fact that they can play / be able to play this someday. XD

  • OH MY GOD ...

I think i will stop the piano and go playing Modern Warfare 2 ...

  • THIS IS FREAKING INSANE!!!!!! THIS IS A GIANT ORGY!!!!!!

  • can anyone tell me what is the name of the piece that was written for strings, I'm pretty sure it was scriabin, starts of with church bells and strings and finishes with an incredibly long cord/drone? much appriciated..

  • @faveswha

dude this isn't the place for this <_< but i think you are talking about arvo pärt's cantus in memoriam benjamin britten. hope it helps.

  • @coqdorysme Thx coqdorysme this IS what i've been searching for.

  • I LOVE the contrast with this song. Lovely played! it sounds very clean and it has wonderful color. I think true talent lies in the person who can play with real raw emotion. THIS IS TALENT!

  • fucking nice ;D

  • also melts faces.

  • I think it's fair to say that Scriabin is God.

  • @KheldarPr These are comments that should be a 1000 times "thumb-upped" :)

  • @KheldarPr When he was living, Scriabin actually DID think he was god; either that, or was "part" of god.

  • @AcerbusEquinomin you are part of God too,so..

  • @12345qazx1 Are you a Pantheist?

  • @KheldarPr

    Rachmaninoff being the Devil then?

  • @crazyasskid69 i'd rather turn it around, rachmaninoff is too harmonic >:P

  • @Sanitoeter666

I'd fair say Rachmaninoff has had much darker moments and wrote darker pieces than Scriabin.

  • @crazyasskid69 Such as? I haven't listened to much Rachmaninoff, and I've been meaning to get into him, but I'm not sure where to start.

  • @Nutterbutterz95 Prelude op 32 no 10, etude op 39 n 5 and 9 than all the piano concertos. And anyway almos everything he composed is beautiful.

  • @Nutterbutterz95 start with "Rachmaninov - Preludes & Moments Musicaux by Lugansky" available on Amazon and elsewhere for download. Listen to that first piece (Morceaux de fantaisie Op.3 : II Prelude) and then decide if you like Rachmaninov

  • @crazyasskid69 well let's agree on that they all are great composers and can't be compared. i think thats the best solution ;)

  • @Sanitoeter666

Of course I agree with you, but I'm afraid that even the notion on debating Rachmaninoff's darkness compared to Scriabin is ridiculous. This heinous act must be stopped!

  • @crazyasskid69 Haha okay let's stop it right here ;) Well my diabolic master, unreached, stays Liszt with his Totentanz and Mephisto Waltz.... i could listen to / play those pieces the whole day. Bad thing i got a social life.. :)

  • @Sanitoeter666

    Don't we all.

  • @crazyasskid69 Really? Then I suggest you check out Scriabin - Vers La Flamme played by maestro Horowitz (and more)...

  • @tweriovnzxclb

Obvious comment comming from someone who has not listened to the masterpiece of Prelude in C# Minor.

  • @crazyasskid69 you're right, that is a super obscure piece that is rarely ever performed. so he probably hasn't heard it

  • @KheldarPr No, actually Scriabin was a nut that wrote Chopinesque piano music with a Russian accent, yet made great by Horowitz's genius- God made them both-hahahahaha

  • Wow.. I love his interpretation. Is there anyway I can download Horowitz's performance in mp3? I cant find it anywhere in music stores or online! someone please help me

  • @swy327 go to listentoyoutube(.)com and just type the url of this video into the space and then itll give you a download link and then it'll download only the mp3 from this video.

  • @mudvaynefosho THANK YOU!

  • Best piano peice ever!!! THANK YOU!!!
