  • im a christian but i doo not like this in the slightest way. you don't have to hold your face and make a big show to worship God. in my opinion this rendition is impossible to worship to because of the way it is performed

  • @Imagirl36 Marion in her heyday would have ran all over the place, but since she was unable to even stand she could only hold her face she was very very ill at this point in her life.

  • @Imagirl36 I really liked this rendition. It was sung with a lot of emotion. I don't care for gospel artists who sing with no emotion or feeling. I think if you truly believe in the words you are singing then it must be sung with emotion.

  • She's amazing and I love her voice. God bless ms. Marion!

  • @kaylainpurple Because I know what I believe and what happens to people that don't, I don't see this as wasting time, it's never a waste of time, could even call it an act of cruelty not to spend some time at it.

  • Awkward because god doesn't exist -_-

  • @ItsOneInAMillion Do atheists seek out christian songs so they can get a rise? That's just something I never understood.

  • @kaylainpurple YES. But seriously this song is on my guitar exam and so i came to check it out :)

I find this song a little strange... its asks "Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?". No one was there, so its hard to say what really happened. Christians rely on the bible, whoever wrote that could have made the whole thing up!

  • @ItsOneInAMillion How dare you come to this place where our sacred music is and a place where people like me come to find a little peace in this world and attempt to sully it?...Forgive him Father for he know not what he just said...

  • @ru1iam12 How dare I use my brain, not believe in fairy tales? How dare I not believe in a magical being in the clouds? Haha

Theists are seriously going to send the world back into medieval times!

  • @ItsOneInAMillion You must be a sad little person. First, you posts inappropriate, abusive, and highly inflamatory comments as it relates to the sacred. As if that in and of itself weren't bad enough, you then are posting them at 4:00am. I wish you had some of this peace and joy I own which flows from Calvary's Mountain. God bless you man.

  • @ru1iam12 First of all, there's this thing called "time zones" where not everyone in the world experiences the exact same time. What's 4am for you may be prime time for me as I live in a different country to you. You are using the World Wide Web and not United States Wide Web :)

I enjoy my own peace and joy and I don't need a magical being who lives in the sky to do so :)

  • @ru1iam12 And I think this "God" should be doing more important things, like you know allowing for world peace, fixing poverty etc than doing pointless things like blessing me haha

I hope you live your life to the fullest as this is the only life you will ever get and use it to make a positive difference in the world.

    OK THANKS BYE

  • @ItsOneInAMillion Hi . . . understand where you're coming from. My view is different from yours regarding the metaphysical, but I can sense your concerns by just looking at global conflicts. The people here listening to the spirituals and gospels are comforted. It's their quiet space.

  • @ItsOneInAMillion Students rely on textbooks, whoever wrote that could've made the whole thing up! (Yes, I did just call into question your entire education. When you say things like that about the bible to a christian, that's what it feel like.)

  • @kaylainpurple Hard to make up tested and proven things up. Textbooks are always changing when new information comes through and are always criticized if they're not up to date, or contain wrong information. Its not really possible for textbook authors to make things up, unless if you live in a totalitarian regime, ie North Korea or Iraq of old. Or in the dark ages where its fairly easy to make something like "the bible or the koran" up.

  • @ItsOneInAMillion The thing is the Bible is written during a period of over 4000 years, there are 6000 manuscripts describing the life of JESUS CHRIST and they are all from the first millennium, there are only 10 manuscripts describing the life of Julius Ceasar and they are all from the beginning of the second millennium, still everyone accepts the things they teach us about Ceasar.

The Bible is a totalitarians worst enemy.

  • @BuyaahKazan The bible itself wasn't written during a period of 4000 years. The bible CONTAINS stories that may have been written over a period of 4000 years, but its only combined in the bible. Even if the bible was somehow written over a period of 4000 years, that doesn't really prove anything?

Jesus may have existed, i'm not arguing against that. I fail to understand how that proves anything? Jesus may have been a extremely good speaker and somehow managed to convince a whole bunch of.....

  • @ItsOneInAMillion Reading your comment I get the feeling it's not a matter of acknowledging the truth, but more one of not wanting to accept it, you'll find an excuse to not believe even if you would seen JESUS get up from the grave.

For this song on guitar you're looking at the wrong video, search for the version by Johnny Cash or Willy Nelson

  • @BuyaahKazan Don't waste your time arguing with this kid. You know what you believe, and what happens to people like that.

  • @BuyaahKazan a whole bunch of people who lived in the dark ages that he was/is the son of god. I don't think it would've been too difficult considering that people in those days thought the world was flat, that the sun revolved around the earth, who didn't know how disease occured, who didn't know most other basic science that we do today.

So its no surprised that they believed in magic and god and other ridiculous things. We should be well past that. Especially living in the 21st century.

  • @ItsOneInAMillion You know what? If you're right, why do you care? Why waste your time arguing? I never understood that about atheists. According to your belief, you'll just die and it'll be over with. According to my belief, you'll die, and your time after won't be too happy. You should cross your fingers and hope you're right, because the punishment for people like you is pretty bad. Since you're an atheist, maybe you should go to, say, atheist videos, and stop annoying the Christians.

  • @kaylainpurple Well you're in the same boat as me. You're going to hell according to countless other religions, so you should be really hoping that your religion is correct somehow. Atheists don't care what crap people believe in, but when it interferes with their lives, then they get pissed off. Like people killing other people in the name of religion or people discriminating others in the name of religion. This is very common in the world, and this is why many atheists need to argue.

  • she looks like a dried fruit of some sort

  • AMEN-yes there is a GOD

  • sometimes it causes me to tremble...yes it does. What a gift God blessed this dear woman with! Beautiful, and yes, I am weeping, too.

  • She sounds like my Aunt Carrie Lee, R.I.P Auntie... This brought back memories.

  • I couldn't help sobbing...... Her singing wholeheartedly expresses the agony and hope of African-American people of "dark those days".

What's more, I've never realized that a song can be sung so freely - it truly matches the theme of "freedom".

I'm a Japanese listener, but I must say, no Japanese singer can "imitate" Ms. Marion William's way of singing. She is a soul of Gospel itself !!

  • Amazing !!!!!!:)

  • This song has a very special ANOINTING!!! When u hear this song think back to The Passion of the Christ.... Jesus is calling..... Sinner man, Sinner woman,,,, will u answer Him?

  • We sang this song in church on Good Friday, and I had to hold back tears.

  • Stunningly beautiful and haunting. It brought tears to my eyes.

  • Hallelujah!!!!!! That's all I can say.

  • gee..Im crying while listening-..true words

  • she feels what she is singing - and so do I ... best rendition of this song I've heard...

" I can't stand too much of this song" - says it all

  • when you hear this you cannot deny that people can break free!

  • On An American Spiritual

  • the band im in is playing this song for a competiton it sound so pretty

  • @swaqqsick21 i love that peace..On An American Spiritual

  • jadidweto, your heart is truly the ugliest and most horrific than I've ever seen.

  • my dad use to sing this when I was little. Not heard it in years, makes me think of him. may he rest in peace.

  • holy kamoli she cant sing

  • The title is quite plain but when you really think about God, who he is, and how awesome and omnipotent he works, you truly begin to understand why the question is asked, "were you there"?

  • wow her voice is just soooo beutiful

  • she said "I CAN'T STAND TOO MUCH OF THIS SONG" lol...PRAISE THE LORD!

  • Fantastic Post.

  • very touching my Lord I felt this song.

  • I'm totally, absolutely fan of Marion since almost 4O years...but I deny god exits. Sorry...Friendly yours.

  • @bpicaud1 So do I

  • When is this Documentary coming on I'm ready for it

  • @mohhran Our Scriptures were inspired by God to the witness of MANY men and the same Gospel throughout. You will find no new Gospel here. That is forbidden. Man is a sinner. He is unable by his works or obedience to bring his own salvation. Our obedience is required of us YES, but will not save. Only the mercy of God can save us and he chose BLOOD as propitiation. He gave his own BLOOD for us to bring lasting forgiveness. Search the Word of God my friend and you will find this is true.

  • @mohhran The plan from the beginning. What did the Lord God do when Adam sinned? He killed an animal and COVERED Adam and Eve. Whose sacrifice was acceptable- Cain's vegetables or Abel's animals? Cain became angry when God would not accept his offerings and slew Able, whom God accepted. Abraham was prompted to sacrifice his heir, WHY? Because God's intention from the beginning was to COVER us with the Blood of his Son.

  • On Good Friday, it is important to remember what God did for us on this day

  • Powerful.

  • I know GOD is Able!

  • I know GOD is Able!

  • neonpanda101,this is her stly of singing it was great back in our granny's day it is a blessin to listen to.any way the word of God say's make a joyful noise unto the Lord. This is a beautiful sounding noise! Don't hate! Praise him for his word!

  • Qur'an 4.157

That they said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah";- but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not:-

    4.158

Nay, Allah raised him up unto Himself; and Allah is Exalted in Power, Wise;-

if he was Killed then his killer must be ur hearoes !!!

  • @mohhran the problem with what muslims believe is that you dont understand the purpose of Chist's death...it was not an empty death, but rather the very reason He came...He came to give us life abundantly and to do that He had to die so that the sacrifice for our sins would be paid:) Just wanna let you know that Creator of heaven and earth loves you so much that He did this for you...peace and blessings

  • @luvtheLordJesus

the problem with Churches is avoiding the true teaching of Bibles n using their own things and theory. Pitty most of u Church goers don't even to do ur own research by reading Bible:

Thing is Jesus son of Mary (Isa pbuh Ibn Maryam) didn't even die, now which sins did u comit so Jesus had to die for em some 2000 yrs ago?

I as Muslim believe Jesus pbuh is one f the mighty messengers, born iraclouslyh, performed miracles by the power n command of the one who sent him.

  • @mohhran

Do you know why 2,199,817,400 BELIEVE in church, read Bible and following Lord Jesus Christ?

Because Our Lord Jesus Christ is true Son of GOD

You have to walk in the Light to understand the Mystery

Our Lord Told us Love your Enemy

  • @micreddy,

I would really love to have dialogue with you concerning our both faith i.e Islam and Christianity in mutual respect.

Talking about the Numbers as you said 2.2 Billion of Christian I may say as Arguement what do you think about 1.5 Billion of us and Number r on the rise?

See let's Stop acusing one another.

As I said before as Muslim I do believe Jesus son of Mayr (Isa Ibn Maryam) is one of the mighty messenger.

Infact Jesus said there is Only One God, we Say there is Only One God

  • @mohhran

Did you Hear about Father , Son and HolySpirit (Trinity) one god in three and three in one that's what Mystery

God send us So many Prophets , some of the Prophets Killed ,

That's the reason God finally send us His only son our Lord Jesus Christ

do you know mother teresa and the Missionary of Charity , read her book what she tells about Jesus Christ our Lord

  • @micreddy

    Hi bro/Sis.

I know about the theory of Trinity, but bro/Sis, strange thing is that there is NO SUCH WORD "TRINITY" in ur Bible, the beggining of linking Jesus us god/son of/ started at the council of Nicea, I donno if u've read about it, but google it " council of NICEA 325" read about it, u gonna learn alot what hidden before u:

Jesus never in his life time on earth said from his own words I am God, n never from his own words said worship me,

infact he said worship one God

  • @mohhran

    Hebrews Chapter 1

"You are my son; this day I have begotten you"? Or again: "I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me"?

    Acts Chapter 13

by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, 'You are my son; this day I have begotten you.'

  • @micreddy

Well so u took AKJ version:

but bro/sis that Quote from that vrse did NOT start from verse 5, n infact why u try to trick, why didn't Quote the whole context and the text in full?

    KJV Pslam 1:5

For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

my Question was "where did Jesus from HIS OWN WORDS said "I AM GOD" n from his own words said WORSHIP ME?

  • this song is beautiful but no offence to her but i sang it better than her and im not beeing mean either

  • this made me cry.. :(

  • ???

  • @bittydub You're being unkind. I believe she's talking about the emotion being so powerful for her when she talks about the song being "too much for her." At least, I think I'm responding to your complaint. Your note is so fragmented, I'm not sure quite what you're trying to say.

  • yes. that was unkind. i'm sorry. and, computer malfunction. i love that song and i believe you're correct. i'm sorry for that. i can't and won't watch Mel Gibson's movie because I don't want to see Jesus being crucified. it's too horrible

  • Yes, that was painful to watch. Kind of an odd marriage of song and visual, I thought. The version of the song was nice, but the clips (from a movie I've never had much inclination to see for reasons similar to your own) were a bit much.

  • Yall should hear and see her when she was younger.

    She was a soprano

  • OMG no offence but seriously! this is so not good...i can see she can sing...sorta..no not rlly. i HATE 43 thru 46 it scares me! crazy......

  • Oh so the Crucifixion was a little fairy tale HUH?

    It is scary.

If you were there when they crucified my Lord, youd be scared during the whole event.

  • dude! U WERENT FUKIN THERE EITHER! i believe its scary im catholic i have to catholic skewl my whole and yes i do cuss, ooooo sad aint it kid. plus i go to church every thursday and saturday and im in choir and i am in the passion play every year! SO DONT BE TRYIN TO INTIMIDATE ME CUZ YUR NOT GNNA!

  • DID I SAY I WAS

    NO

    SHUT U UP

anyway, You can be involved in all u mentioned and more. But that wont get u into heaven

U must be saved sanctified and filled with the holy ghost.

That's all u need and then to live it and not cuss.

  • dude u kno wat.i just hate how she sang the song ok! I sang it recently with my choir at the passion.and u arguing with me isnt going to get u in heaven. WWJD! so ha!

  • I'm just sayin. This is her style of singing. If you listen to her sing In the upper room, youll see. And peopke love ot. Look at the ratings

  • Do you have a tentative release date for this documentary. I would be very interested in purchasing a copy.

  • TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What a voice ,a singers , an everything !!!

  • When was this?

  • When you hear this, you cannot deny that God exists.

  • amen to that.

  • @bluesboy25000 I deny.

  • @bluesboy25000 God doesn't exist.

  • @Traynor921 to you He doesn't...Do not harden your heart so that you may never hear His word and be saved.

  • @Traynor921 you don't know that

  • @Traynor921 you don't know that...and if that's the case, WHY are you on this particular site/page. Get off and keep it moving....LOL Hallelujah!!!

  • @LATONJA3TS Because I like the Johnny Cash version and I wanted to watch another version, jesus police!

  • @Traynor921

May HE bless and keep you. God put before u this day good and evil, he would that u do good and live. God is REAL, JESUS IS REAL. Greater is HE that is in You than HE that is in the world. For God so loved the world, HE gave HIS only begotten Son, who so ever believeth in Him shall not parish but have everlasting life.

  • @bluesboy25000 Amen Amen and Amen!!!

  • Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.rev;4;8. Thank You Jesus.

  • Briainwash,

Without AA music and cutlure, there would be no music in America. If you don't like it, who is begging you to hang around. Why don't you hang around people who play the kind of music you like. African American music rules the planet, no other music exist that worth anything.

  • heard this song on coronation street when sophie webster was singing it

    LOL

  • WOW I like this rendition of Were you there. Marion Williams like Mahilia Jackson is a Gospel Great

  • Look how long she held that note at 2:37 wow and I sure at this particular time she was in her mid to late 60's, wow.

  • @PLATINUMFIYAH

    she was 64

  • OMG! i enjoyed this! i've only seen younger videos of her but this video of her singing when she is older is just as great! she looks a little different but her voice and expressions are so obviously the same! wow! i love marion williams, cuz u can always feel the power of God thru her when she sings!!!

  • I LOVE Jesus and I love music. Guess how much I enjoyed this video?!?!?!?!?!? Thank you for posting this it was a highlight of my day!

  • Beautiful!! The woman has SOUL.

  • not that i have anything against african american church music but do they have to turn every song whimsical and happy? sometimes solemnity is good. Great song and original voice though.

  • Comment removed

  • i think its hard for some people to understand that african american people come from a place in time filled with some much hate pain and negativity that faith in the lord is all that they had to hold on to,so when you sing the lords praise you want to shout a joyful noise.

  • yes, I appreciate that. Many of my friends are african american and I know their history very well. Still can't we have some diversity in church music for once?

  • I think because as a people, African Americans have always been able to pull hope out of despair. Our lives then, and for many now are full of despair and cause us to equate solemnity with sadness and sorrow, so we make even the most solemn of songs into a joyous affair, because like the old song says, we sing because we are happy!

  • Actually we have various forms of music that come out of the African American church experience; however, what gets the most attention is the "happy" music you're referring to.

  • a fellow youtuber has sent some of the more solemn african american music over, I apologize for stereotyping.

  • good question. I'm black and I wonder the same thing.

  • ONE MORE TIME!!!

  • WOW!!!

  • Maravilhoso!!!

  • She opens her mouth and her soul pours out!! Thank you for posting this. Raw and honest and moving!!

  • Very cool! Peace!

  • I think that first sentence is a more accurate description of you, zekscrab, and not Marion Williams' singing.

  • its horrible plane and simple.

  • Classic!

  • She was awesome, Awesome, AWESOME...BUT, she didn't sing the last verse!

Were you there, when He rose up from the grave?

Were you there, when He rose up from the grave?

Oh sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble

Were you there, when He rose up from the grave?

  • NEGRO SPIRITUAL YES

  • she still got it

  • c'est koi sa ?? mdr ptdr

  • you can see the passion in her face when she sings. brilliant and inspiring

  • She makes me laugh every single time.

  • xD ikr! its so terrible it makes me wanna shiz myself.(:

  • Well go away

    That's the problem with yall

Yall cant appreciate the old time gospel

You aint got to be American Idol to sing gospel music because it's the goodness of God

  • Simply beautiful I can't wait for the film to be released

  • WOW!!--This must've been closer to the end of her life and yet that light was still burning from deep within!---SANG MAMA MARION!!

  • I brings also tears in my eyes...we miss her so much! Thank you for posting this and please let us have some more!I met her in Switzerland, and I wil never forget the nicest concert of my life...

  • OMG is all I can say... did you feel that towards the end? When she grabbed her face... OMG it's still all over my spine.... sang girl

  • I can't stop crying. Wow. See make me treble, treble, treble.

  • WHAT YEAR WAS THIS

  • Man How can i obtain a copy of this concert?

  • Even though Williams' performances are widely remembered as the frenetic powerhouse showmanship of her youth where she strutted through the audience and aisles, this video argues that she's easily as devastating without leaving her seat, much less the stage. The limited physical expressions (more latent than kinetic) are compensated by the enhanced vocal and facial expressions. Almost like a dam about to burst or, rather, explode. Wow, the listener can't take too much of that song, either!

  • Comment removed

  • Praise God

  • I cant even stand it! Marion Williams just tore this song to streads!!

  • One year before receiving the MacArthur Genius Award and the Kennedy Center Honor, two years before her death, Marion was still capable of astonishing a gospel lover. Seated, she was almost as kinetic as when she used to strut down aisles. The words tore her apart: "I can't stand too much of this song." At 2:37 she holds a note for 14 seconds, "Packin' Up" length. But it's in the improvisations that come next that she best demonstrates her soul and genius.
