I can only assume. I know that Yoko herself explains this piece simply by saying, "it's something women go through." I connected with the vulnerability of Yoko's original piece, and felt it to be saying something along the lines of, "people do it in their minds anyway." This makes the most sense to me, especially since a large amount of her 'paintings' are done within the mind.
As I said, however, reproductions don't have to say the SAME thing, but they have to say SOMEthing.
Cut Piece is a very dramatic piece, and while I believe fervently that Yoko Ono wants her artworks to be done and redone and performed by people and contributed to, I think that this one missed the mark. There's nothing wrong with using the piece to say something different than the original piece, but this one didn't seem to be saying anything at all. There was no focus, not by the performer nor the audience. They seemed to come up, cut, and go back to chatting. It loses it's potency this way.
ummmm thanks for that and i agree up until...well up until the part that you said "there was no focus"...so im just wondering if you do actually know and understand what Yoko's original piece (which is admitadely cool)what her piece actually meant?
huumm this is really interesting, i mean ur right when u say "They seemed to come up, cut, and go back to chatting. It loses it's potency this way" buut, this performance can also meke sense, when woanellie sad "they start chatting again. It's genuine, and real. This women is being disrespected and then completely ignored" both sides are interesting.
This reminds me of MY work of art-Cut Piece, where a circle of Rabbis come up one by one, each contributing to a circumcision, thus showing the "circle of life", as well as the "layers" of the mysteries of life being peeled away, for a more hygienic existence with a greater deterrent toward masturbation...
The conceptuel performativ art repeat as academic syand up could be an error ?
Not so much if we think that all experience must be done to be understood as a real personnal experienced. Maybe cut piece would be a cathartic experience rather than a way to claim for political and gender stand up.
There needs to be more deliberation. Yoko maintained the same facial expression and focus throughout the whole piece. There is too much head movement here, as if the performer is bored to tears and just waiting for the piece to end.
I want to be nice, I love Yoko Ono's Cut Piece, but this needs to be thought out. This was already redone by Marina Abramovic, which I thought was iffy. The sitting position is off as Ono sat in a traditional Asian position which represented her culture and showed the viewer her vulnerabitlity. Were the scissors on the floor or did someone have them? Why is the lighting not deliberate? Was this done to THE VERY END, otherwise it was not effective of the point which fails it as a video piece.

Again, this just seems like a gimmick. "What an interesting new way to strip a woman!"

That would sound really cool if I wasn't morally opposed to circumcision....
(and rather less than in favor of deterring masturbation)

Have you seen Yoko's performance? If so, you need to look at it again. 1965.
