Just lovely. I down loaded the tab from your website and have worked on it and find it to be much easier than it sounds like it would be. In comparing the tab to your video, it looks like you repeat measure 53 through 56 at the end and then modify the ending a bit. If you get this and are willing to reply, can you explain the notation in measure 33? I don't understand what this is. I assume harm is for harmonics?
@JIMCPAMEEK Hi Jim, the tab was done for an earlier recording, if I recall, so I probably made a few changes by the time I shot the video, without even realizing it! Yes, I'm not sure why that just says "harm". Sounds dangerous :-) Those are natural harmonics at the 12th fret. The open D string being in parens in the tab looks like a mistake, that's just the normal pickup to the melody, a regular open 4th string. Hope that helps!
THIS is the definitive arrangement of this song... and played so beautifully. I'm sure the composers of Shenandoah would be pleased. Thanks for sharing! (beautiful guitar, too!)
@jamesobrien777 Thanks for the kind words. Your comment got me wondering if the composer was known - I know it's a public domain tune, but sometimes there is a known composer. Apparently in this case, no one knows who wrote it and it was originally a sea shanty.
Just lovely! I know and can play Lawrence Juber's version, also in DADGAD, but this is in some lovely, yet subtle and elegant ways, even more flowingly melodic. Thanks so much for sharing your incredible gift with us all Doug!
Just lovely! I know and cna play Lawrence Juber's version, also in DADGAD, but this is in some lovely, yet subtle and elegant ways, even more flowingly melodic. Thanks so much for sharing your incredible gift with us all Doug!
Back for another listen/lesson. The tone is world-class as is your arrangement. Your arrangement might well be the most copied on YouTube. Is the a Ryan? What kind of wood on the back and sides?
7 years or so ago, when i was in high school, your recordings had a big influence on my playing style. i never really knew what true fingerstyle was until i heard your recordings of "wayfaring stranger" and "no two ways about it". i bought a transcription from you, and you sent it in the mail with a note that said "thanks pat! -doug young". i believe that note is stuck on my fridge today. thanks for helping a kid learn the guitar, and keep playing!
This is great, thanks! It's my first attempt at DADGAD tuning, and I really like it. The tab is also very well done. I don't want to look a gift horse in the teeth, but have you ever thought of highlighting the melody notes in some way to help us beginners? For example, I know that the lyrics begin on the last note of the 8th measure (Oh) and continue with the next three or four notes. I've done this with songs and it has helped me and may help others.
@mayberry090 Glad you liked it, and congratulations on gettting it down. You mean have the tab highlight the melody somehow? Seems like a good idea, I see if I can figure out a way to do that.
@DougYoungGuitar Thanks again. Sometimes when trying to learn a piece like Loretta by Townes Van Zandt or Queen Bee by Taj Mahal, I'll highlight the bass and work through that first. In pieces like your arrangement of Shenandoah, where the melody is subtle, I think it would help novices like me to play through that while singing the lyrics so we can hear it when beginning to learn the full arrangement. In any event, this is a beadutiful arrangement and I'm most appreciative.
@mayberry090 Mark Hanson used to make all his bass notes bold in his hand-written tab, which I always thought was useful. Most tab programs these days don't make it easy to set the font on individual notes, but maybe there's a way to make it work. I like the idea!
@avesbirdgun yes, I use a stereo out from the guitar to a two channel preamp where I can blend them however I want. I can leave them as stereo, with each pickup on each side, or pan them to the center for mono, or anything in between.
Very lush and creative arrangement. Beautifully done. Shenandoah is a longtime favorite of mine. I just ordered your CD largely because of this piece, which I discovered when searching for good approaches to recording acoustic guitar in the home studio. You've also gotten me interested in DADGAD tuning to expand the sound palette of the guitar, so I'm definitely going to get your recent book on the topic shortly. Thanks.
I cant thank you enough for posting this.. I have been slowly struggling my way through the gaddad tuning and this song really got my ears opened up.. Thanks for a beutiful performance too..
I really appreciate this arrangement. This song flows with a gentle rhythm without any sudden stops for harmonic chords that tend to distract from the melody. I'm just learning fingerstyle and would love to know if you have any other music that lends to this style. Well done!
@squirrel282 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I have quite a few gentle ballad type tunes that are probably at least somewhat similar. Check out my other videos, like In My Life or WIldwood Flower, and there are also tunes (and some tabs) on my web site. Thanks again!
When I was a boy, my dad (who had a great voice) would sing this song as he did work around the house......... This is an absolutely beautiful heart warming rendition of that song; not ashamed to say it brought a tear; thanks for posting
I just listened to this about ten times. This is one of my favourite songs, and this rendition of it just took Mason William's spot of number one on my list.
My 13 old daughter is now playing this, albeit at a slower pace, given when I practiced this piece she slowly grew to love it. Hoping in a month or so she'll be more then confident enough to play it publicly.
Doug, I downloaded your tab for this about 2 years ago. It was my first intro to DADGAD and still one of my favorites to play. I love this arrangement, and especially how it sounds with you playing on that Ryan! Looking forward to your new CD. I bought Laurel Mill at the same time I started learning this song. Thanks!
Beautiful, sweet rendition, Doug!! I love it!! It's very different from the rendition I presently have posted on YouTube. I like the way you have a lot of interesting fingerpicking activity,... and within that, the familiar melody slowly and dreamily flows along. Nice relaxed, phrasing and every note sounds so clear and rich. Wow,... you're good. A nice lush recording as well. Thanks for posting this classic.
Doug, Still love the Laurel Mill CD and learning a few of the tunes...have done versions of 'Shenandoah' and 'I Will' also on YouTube at my site "Nige2410"..any plans for any more CD recordings ?
Doug, I just wanted to add my thanks for sharing this wonderful video and tabs. As a keen (intermediate) amateur I have been practicing this piece exclusively, hour after hour, for 5 days running and don't see how I will ever tire of playing it. This is my first DADGAD experiment and now I will be searching for more DADGAD pieces, hoping to find some as beautiful as this one. Any suggestions or tabs will be very much appreciated! I'll be watching your website! Thanks again!
Very nice arrangement, thanks for making the tab available. This piece will be excellent to play along side with some of Bensusan's tunes that I'm also working on.
Beautiful! I had stumbled onto your site about 6 months ago looking for a Shenandoah tab. Yours was by far the best. I can play it....but not as beautifully as you!

hi, Mr. doug young.
i went to your pickup test website and saw the combination of seymour duncan magmic and k&k mini.
i really love its sound.
i'd want to ask you how to set them up.
do you set them seperately with a Y-cable?
or combine them in a single output?
