Thanks for posting this song from the Broadway version, but here's a little joke from Rogers & Hammerstein that you will enjoy: ..... " How Can Love Survive?" in INSTRUMENTAL FORM is also in the MOVIE ! It's the baroness's song in scene 34 when Eleanor Parker walks down the stairs after "helping Maria". Enjoy !
Everyone's got their own ideal version of Sound of Music: Recently, at Rainbow Stage, both this and Something Good (by Rodgers, no Hammerstein) were featured in the production. They both worked pretty well. Previously I caught it at Rainbow Stage and I'm pretty sure Something Good was not in it. It's got material enough for about 1.5 musicals
I've seen all the documentaries behind the Sound of Music movie, and cutting this song out had nothing to do with the actress. The decision not to have it was made before casting started, or the script was even completed. They wanted the movie to be more serious, and less cheesy so they cut out access songs from the play. On top of that, it's not necessary for the plot, it just slows it down.
this is my favortie song from sound of music! this and i have confidence but it makes mad this wasnt in the movie :( bu im in a sound of music production right now and the elsa and max are so amazing it makes me happy to hear them sing this :)
Good pick-up by EdwardsAlterEgo!!! BTW....don't forget to listen to the 2006 London Palladium Revival soundtrack: The song was added back with excellent vocals and recording.
I'm playing Max in my school's production of this, but unfortunately they cut this song because of length restrictions! D: so now Max is a part that has no singing at all =[
This is my favorite part of the musical it gives an edge to the love story - the movie of course cut it as well as "there's no way to stop it" but played it as a waltz
Agreed that Eleanor Parker who played the Baroness in the film could not sing. HOWEVER, she received an Oscar nomination playing Opera Star Marjorie Lawrence in 1955 (dubbed by Eilleen Farrell) so she could have been dubbed in the film. I suspect that Director Wise and Producer Chaplin decided that these songs slowed the film down and that they wanted to focus on the leads. Too bad. This and "No Way to Stop It" are fantastic songs that I grew up learning from the OBC album!
@ChristophePhilippe No doubt about it... she was fantastic as Elsa, and the songs aren't crucial to the plot development so I guess in the end everything worked out perfectly fine.
@ATLmusicislove they cut out or rearanged the songs in the movie so young children could understand it. I prefer the live musical score than the movie version. but that's me.
This priceless ditty is such a pleasure to listen to again. Too witty to be included in the film, I agree with others, this is one of the best songs in the orginal score. We used to listen to the Broadway score over and over again when we were kids. And I committed nearly all the songs to memory, this one included. But I didn't really 'get it' about this song until later in life, just how clever and witty the lyrics are. My thanks too for uploading it and bringing a smile to my face.
Elsa, the Countess who the Captain was going to marry, is talking about her relationship with the Captain to Max. She refers to the fact that love stories in books and movies are all about struggle and melodrama and sacrastically asks how her relationship with the Captain could POSSIBLY survive, since they're both affluent. This'll be ironic later when he leaves her for Maria
This is a song that I would describe as "quaint, but charming";Theodore Bikel is still around,& what an unusual career he has had, from the WW2 film"The Enemy Below" to the "Twilight Zone",Broadway,& the Frank Zappa's surrealistic epic "200 Motels".
I don't really like her voice.....but I LOVEEE this song....we're doing the Sound of Music now..and its opening in May and im Mother Abbess but ughhh I love this song
My school did this musical. I love this song so much it's my favorite of the show. Too bad I had to do a costume change during this song so I didn't really get to listen to the whole thing everytime.
When my school put on The Sound of Music, I begged the director that we could sing this sone because I played Max. Turns out I didn't get to sing it. Still, it's a great song.
We were playing selections from the Sound of Music as a medley in band and trombones had the melody for this one. Then we cut it for time. I was so upset; I hate how everyone only cares about the Julie Andrews version. (Although I love Julie Andrews to pieces, Mary Martin AND Theodore Bikel's cast more than deserves to be appreciated on its own.)

Why do people keep saying this is a waltz? The first 20 or so seconds are in 3/4, yes, but then it switches to cut time for the rest of the piece.

if it is, what's the actor's name that played Elsa?

Yes, it's Elsa. All the actors' names are in the description, but to save you a trip, Marion Marlowe was Elsa Schraeder.
