This is clearly one of the best Blues recordings of all time! Played straight thru, no studio dubs, amazing guitarist showing just how badass he really was. I personally think he was the best natural talent at guitar that ever lived, having listened to many great guitar players. There is something so pure and powerful about Stevie that no one else could ever replicate. nuff said
when i was young i always thought that he want to imitate Jimmy Hendrix and did not listen enough music from Stevie, and have to set the record straight that Stevie has his very own identity and does miracles with a giutar and is with Jimmy one of the top players of the globe and guitarlovers should also listen to Monte Montgomery especially little wing, it is awesome people
@MrBentyWenty i spoke about the song not the player and if you think bb king is the best, i think different but i advise you to listen to monte montgomery with little wing (never liked covers) but this one blowed my mind so take a listen and look for ur self
@ferdieregtop man i hate to say this but i still think B.B King kills it. Im not here to argue because i think all blues is good blues but its just an opinion. Im just happy that their are other people on this planet that love blues like i do. i did check it though, and was amazed.... never heard it before so thanks for the heads up.
@a7x7636 Check out this guy Stevie's Snacks, he's got a quite a few good SRV tutorials out, and this is his take on the lick you're trying to play! I gave up on that lick a long time ago. It's madness!
God took this man away from us too soon. I believe that Stevie Ray and Mark Knopfler are the best electric guitar artists out there. But this piece, well, let's just say that when I first heard it, the transitions and rifts; it takes me somewhere/someplace I just can't describe. The best damned blues piece I've heard in decades. God Bless you Stevie! You didn't just play guitar; you made it cry.
Did 'til he cleaned up after collapsing on a street in Paris and almost died from alchohol poisoning. a fifth of Crown Royal every day can do that to you. He paid off all his debts and made good on all his obligations. AND THEN, he released In Step. He turned out to be a fine gentleman, and a real Man who took care of his house. He is so missed still. I don't know of a single SRV fan that truly didn't love him. Still hurts so bad.
Anyone have any idea WHY youtube won't let me play this song in a personal playlist? I get this "SME Group will not allow this song to be played in a playlist. Sorry 'bout that," or something similar. And it's not just this song by SRV. There are others.
Two people apparently never had it rough and can't understand where the rough one feel you little boys need to go suck on mamas titty. Coming from a good ol country boy who grew up with shit how can you not appreciate this music are you smoking Meth douche bags
As Holly would say "As the days go by, we face the increasing inevitability that we are alone in a godless, uninhabited, hostile and meaningless universe. Still, you've got to laugh, haven't you?"
I remember the first time I heard this, I was 17 hungover in my bedroom listening to the tape I had bought the previous day. The people that talk about goose bumps I can completely empathise with and more. The pain of the hangover was just blown away but that SRV melodic guitar that was played with so much passion and feeling.
If there was a god he would be alive today, such a waste.
@rmbb10 Nobody can say when the Blues started, however, it's a style of music that has easily surpassed 100 years, and is still going strong. No such thing as before my time with the Blues.
Having a long ride home in your car and smoking a joint to this song so freaking great. R.I.P Stevie Ray Vaughn. Your blues music and others moves my soul

this song was never called "roughest place in town". Whe Sony re-released it on a later version of couldn't stand the weather and a greatest hits release along with a bunch of stuff Stevie NEVER wanted released, they didn't bother to check the original liner notes and miffed the title. The stuff released immediately after his death, was Sony forcing Jimmy as the executor of his estate, to honor Stevie's contract.
@Caroliner9r Wow, thanks for that insightful piece of music history. What was the name by the way? You must be the long lost Vaughan brother Bobby " The Scrotum" Vaughan. Over shadowed by his older brothers, it was rumored you descended into a life jello shots, gay bars, and finally, an addiction to gay internet porn that closed you off from the world of music. Come out of the closet Bobby, the music needs your hidden talents and knowledge of things unknown.
incredible, ive read in the most recent guitar world magazine in an interview with Chris Layton (double trouble) that this song was recorded live in the studio first take, as in it was supposed to be the dummy track, but the first take was so good, they didnt alter it at all. So basically they walked into the studio, cold with no warm up, plugged in their instruments and started playing this song so that the mix could be eq'd right, but just absolutely nailed it, rare rare talent.
@dmb3305 that was also how voodoo child by jimi hendrix was recorded, except jimi came in and said "hey guys, lets try this little thing here in E" or something to that affect. The rest of the band had never heard it before. Where did music go wrong? When did it go from great art to corporate facade? How did we get from The Beatles to Disturbed????
@NERDZKANDY - I'm fairly certain SRV tuned 1/2 step down throughout (Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb) and used heavy gauge strings, one reason for his awesome guitar tone.
@lastrevolv - I find that it can help sustain, but it's not the only factor. Usually (and clearly there's a million ideas and opinions about this) the harder the wood on the fretboard (ie ebony) and the higher quality pick-ups will be the more significant factors in getting good/long sustain. Of course, there's the beauty of technology these days in effects and pedals that can help get a synthetic sustain. Hope this helps. Cheers

@NERDZKANDY - I'm fairly certain SRV tuned 1/2 step down throughout (Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb) and used heavy gauge strings, one reason for his awesome guitar tone.
Gotta love him! ;-)
AlisterKnighter 2 years ago
@AlisterKnighter one quiestion, do heavy gauge strings give you a significant difference on sustain?
lastrevolv 1 year ago
@lastrevolv - I find that it can help sustain, but it's not the only factor. Usually (and clearly there's a million ideas and opinions about this) the harder the wood on the fretboard (ie ebony) and the higher quality pick-ups will be the more significant factors in getting good/long sustain. Of course, there's the beauty of technology these days in effects and pedals that can help get a synthetic sustain. Hope this helps. Cheers

@lastrevolv there is more metal vibrating so the pickups pick up the sound easier also tuning to Eb helps
