I actually find these CTA videos interesting. I'm a photographer myself from Chicago, and I can relate to getting hassled by the police. Certain locations you have to be careful shooting because city and government officials consider you for a terrorist and you might be plotting on the next catastrophy. Try to avoid trains, bridges, airports, government buildings, and power stations. Oh yeah, to OSRECS: I shoot with a Nikon D2X. :-)
I got hassled for my shots of the brown line at rockwell by about 5 cops who pulled up in 3 cars. After about 45 minutes of convincing them that I'm a photo student and not a terrorist I was on my way with some decent footage. Nice thing about the Nikon D90 is that nobody knows that you're shooting video, looks like you're just setting up for a picture. Nice trainspotting man, keep it up!
Thanks. This is really turning into a police state. I got hassled two months ago at Midway Airport by TSA for filming planes from my gate taking off and landing. Turns out it's legal, but if you're standing outside the airport taping take-offs and landings, you can be arrested and your tape or card confiscated. Insane.
Just saw the nearly-completed new station while waiting there to transfer from the Brown Line to the Purple Line. I miss the old one already, especially Belmont Army Surplus, whose west-facing windows used to face the station.
it's for safety reasons, you were standing in a narrow bridge intended for costumer go from southbound platform to northbound platform or vice, for example if you set a tripod you put in danger another passengers the may get trip and fall. But I know CTA have ignorant supervisors. So next time tell the supervisor if you are not putting in danger other passengers or using a flash that may affect the vision of the operator or blocking the acces to trains it's not illegal
Not only didn't I have a tripod or a flash, I weigh 125 soaking wet. When she came out of that hut, she was three times my width, and actually WAS blocking the walkway. And this wasn't the rush hour; it was a Sunday, and I was the only one up there. This was harassment, pure and simple. But it's a moot point; that walkway's been torn down. Glad I got these pics before then:-)
If I was a threat to Homeland Security because of the color of my skin, so was the employee who told me to put away the camera. Therein lies the conundrum of Homeland Security. Terrorists also look like Timothy McVeigh and Eric Rudolph. Plus, I've been filming openly in and around the 47th St. Red Line station without incident;-)
no, i didnt stop to think because i dont know the city well and never heard of any of those areas except bridgeport. thats why im asking whether or not an unfamiliar area is safe. apparently you think its safe and i appreciate the input. but keep in mind it only takes one rowdy stop, and im not saying it has to be black, to jazz the whole thing up. at least in my naive opinion.
It's weird. People are being robbed, assaulted, and pickpocketed on CTA property every day and night. But Urkel's nerdier brother videotapes trains and they have a stroke. Railfans should be the least of their worries.
CTA property? Does this mean the trains and stations because Ive been wanting to ride the red line to Chinatown for lunch (Im 20 and white) and people I know fiercely disagree on how safe it is. I know its mostly black south of Chinatown and thats okay (not going there anyway) but some people say I'll be safe as ever and others say I have a 100% chance of being shot, mugged or beaten to a pulp. You seem like a great person to ask, what do you think?
Glad you asked. The law-abiding people here (95% of the population) won't bother you at all. They might ask you if you're lost, but that's about it. The drug dealers won't bother you; beating up potential customers might be bad for business. In fact, there's white kids going to the alternative high school a block north of me. They've never been hassled, but then they look pretty intimidating. Maybe that's the secret;-)
