Prince stated he programmed the drum machine because they couldn't or weren't able to but never really got songwriting credit for it as co-songwriter. So Prince basically programmed that drum machine, the pulsating bas synth, the higher pitched lead synth in the chorus, basically the instrumental parts I'm sure with Stevie's input.
