i know he only had a few days to practice here, but i think mastellotto is one of the most overrated drummers around. any good drummer could have come up with some interesting fills to throw in here and there even if he's never played the song before in his life.
the man was really lucky to work with king crimson, i'm still not sure how that ever happened. (and honestly, would anybody know who he is if he didn't?)
I'm with pelusidae. What's Hackett doing in 'Guitar Wars'? Yes he brought Emmett Chapman's tapping to rock guitar conciousness, but as a complete guitarist, Howe and Hackett could have a war (I'm sure the likes of Segovia, Williams and Pass had the technique and ability, but were too one dimensional to be 'complete') but SH is a nuclear bomb compared to axes, (pun intended) in that war.
My tack is that Hackett is more of an artist and composer, fid it strange that he participated in Guitar Wars which is more for circus acts... but anyway, good to see he enjoyed it and had fun, that's the most important part.
Just watched it and I have to disagree. I'm not saying anything bad about Mr Hackett, just that he did not out shred them. He did nothing shredlike. Its not his style
@josiahgust well actually he have one or two shredder light songs just like firewall from Tokyo tapes cd2 besides he have an excellent classical tecnique with a very personal tune wich is very diffrent from Steve Howe i think that GTR was a very waste they could do a lot of thing together but they did't want to
You guys mentioned 4 guitar giants, and though Hackett is more enjoyable, Howe is probably the most technically acomplished. Just read how many awards he received!
He can sound strange at times, too experimental.
Hackett uses to write pieces that people will definitely like, which is a safe path.
Hackett's guitar work on this song is classic and spine chilling, but people overlook the importance of Rutherford's work on his bass pedals that really gives it that dynamic effect
nobody tht has played axe with genesis (ie Rutherford or Strummer)can touch this - I think mike deliberately recruited an average drummer - so as not to up-stage him making the bass sing. The drumming is awful btw - needs Collins really
when we get into technical skil the award goes to Steve Howe because he is classically trained but Hackett and Gilmour are still more enjoyable as they get the feel and emotion into their playing.
L'inizio, anche se lo so che è un caso, pare l'inizio di Domino dei Genesis, quelli però di un secolo dopo ed anni luce distanti da Hackett....

I could understand criticism of Genesis if this is how Phil drummed.. how to make a great piece of music as boring as hell!

paul gilbert and hackett just can't be on the same stage, the're different guitarrists, very differents musicians in every fact.
but hackett as usual he made it great, he is one of the best guitarrists in the world

I read Steve Hackett in an interview, he seems to like to joke around.

It is part of his humble nature. But notice how he shreds over and above Paul Gilbert and Nuno Bettencourt on "Darktown" (another YouTube vid...)

I agree, he's great, but apparantly he had a very hard time with one of Steve's songs (Mechanical Bride)

I see your point there. I posted that comment about 2 days before buying Hacketts "Metamorpheus" album that has proved your point very nicely.

Hackett used to get crazy sustain from a les paul in his days with Genesis but on the Fernandes here he might as well not even use his pick
