  • Yeah I really love watching this guy teach. He has a marvelous way of teaching.

  • What a teacher!

  • ....and for you Eddie Bravo fans

  • A former teacher once tells me this: the best time to train jiu jitsu is when you already tired, becacuse even if you are strong, you cannot use it anymore. So what remains is the technique.

  • armbar submission reminds of Fedor armbar Naoya Ogawa during PRIDE FC

  • looks like a kool teacher but there is no way in hell im gonna call him MISTER KEITH. gay

  • Using the brain in tandem with the body.

  • Awesome man. He just wants his students to understand because a miseducated student is a very bad reflection on the teacher. People keep saying that there is a martial style of the name "San Shou" which can easily stop the conquering techniques employed by BJJ. I wonder if Keith Owen has a comment for that.

  • AWESOME!

  • I want Keith Owen to be my dad.

  • This is an example why I Started Colorado Fight Source, for BJJ Students and Teachers...

  • Dude's a great teacher.

  • Thanks. Better then my instructor.

  • Man I wish I could find such a teacher loving and understanding his art to this degree at my place.

  • Love the way how he praises Marcelo Garcia, altough I think that Roger Gracie is the best pound4pound BJJ fighter

  • @gundam2388 Rickson i think

  • @saberman41 yeah..but I mean active BJJ fighters :)

  • @gundam2388 roger went to mma

  • Very good video. In most fights we have one strong, big guy facing other smaller, lighter guy. And the smaller guy ends with his back to the ground. Master Helio Gracie developed his art from this principle: "I am the small guy with my back in the ground. How may I fight?".

Respectfully, I add just one word that I listened training with Royler, a son of Helio Gracie: "leverage". Look for the right lever and you can move the world, your oponent included.

    Great Master Helio, RIP.

  • Learned something today. Thanks :)

  • Keith Owen, absolutely one of the best teachers out there.

  • 17 people lost to Sensi Keith =)

  • Yet another incredible video from Submissions101.

I'll be starting BJJ in the next week or so (I've done bits at my MMA gym already but want to specialise a bit more) and this video is a big help... especially the angles bit at the end.

I'm a bit of a Helio in build so BJJ holds a special appeal to me. :)

  • @thirteenfingers Actually, more like a tall Helio... minus the massive wrists.

  • startin at 5:49 i gota remeber all that till the end,

    thats alwayz been my prob

  • yeah so brazilian jiu jutsu translates to brazilian gentle technique so if your using too much force then your doing it wrong

  • @742617sic000027 dont know what language you used to translate from?

jiu does not mean gentle in any language?

  • @lagook Well, bjj was derived from Japanese jujutsu and jujutsu means "gentle technique". It really should be called Brazilian Ju Jutsu, i don't know why they call it Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

  • @742617sic000027 a better translation would be ju - flexibilty jutsu practice of ie art

gentle is rather mis translated, i generally spell it jujitsu i dont know why i just do

its not so much gentle eg judo the flexible way isnt gentle at all

the art is more a flexible aproach to grappling

  • @lagook Yeah, the whole concept behind bjj is to use the least amount of force to subdue your opponentand thats why I like the word gentle.

According to wiki "Ju" can be translated to "gentle, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding."

To me it is the most evolved marital art out there... look what Royce Gracie did to all his (much larger) opponents at the very first UFC!

  • Dude is a great teacher. Funny, articulate, and smart.

  • Awesome video

  • Thanks for the awsome lesson!

  • this is very well said, he understands BJJ very well. I am a blue belt and I am also pretty strong and it is a struggle to sometimes forgoe that strength that I have and just use the technique. I am getting better at it, but I learned that strength only gets you so far, once you gas your muscles are useless, and you gas A LOT faster when using pure strength. Good video my man

  • @joebeast15 Yes, you have to develop sensitivity and use technique over muscles to subdue your opponent.

  • LOL@ the marcelo garcia bit HAHAH!

  • that is a good lesson!

  • This guy is an AWESOME teacher

  • @lazsoliz i agree he broke it down

  • So very true. Its seem to me that the bigger guys who try to muscle their way into a win are alot more easier to deal with than some one who is smaller and relies on technique.

  • @explosiveInc i agree..it goes to the brain vs brawn..brain always wins

  • unless your brain is stupid

  • Perfect instruction. every video i'v watched i feel alittle more empowered. now i want to train in a dojo. i got 18years karate, 1st degree blackbelt and 3years TKD, 2nd degree blackbelt... i'm tired of not knowing ground game. i think its time for some BJJ!

  • Thank you for this video.

  • genius teaching, I always get to last part off the armbar and try to muscle =P

but from now on it will be armbarpalooza =D

  • His explanations and illustrations are wonderful. Excellent instructor

  • can brazilian jiu jitsu be used against 2 or more opponents in unarmed combat?

  • yes. very much yes.

BJJ teaches you how to move well when somebody Grabs you.

You can get away, THROW them, maneuver well against big guys.

  • @pbzkfdt11 actully its not as good on multiple attacker thats why u should learn at leasts two diffrent styles..but one on one bjj wins !!

  • I agree, I am sure be does seminars and I am not for sure about videos you may want to check out his site, budo video or see if they are available for rent at goldstarvideo. I would like some of his videos myself

  • Good guy, we need more Martail Artist like him. Does he do any seminars or have any videos out?

  • Love his teaching style.

  • This vid is awesome, and Keith Owen seems like a great instructor-very articulate, easy going, and competent. If I'm ever in his area I'll be sure to stop by! Thanks!

  • that 45 degree stuff really works. cool video

  • the way he explains things is sooo incredibly cool, you do even don't try to remember this things, you will recall them not only during the fight or training, i would like to see more!! :)

  • this man is awesome! id love to meet him some day! how he explains things is just amazing, he draws u in. mad props!

  • More BJJ guys need to see this

  • good stuff!

  • Hey goatdaddy, NOTHING in this video is different without a gi.Maybe you would rather a one piece or maybe a speedo??A leather jacket or even a light coat can be used like a gi.

  • great video, i really wish though that more instructors would teach jujitsu without the Gi. Other than competition, jujitsu with the Gi really serves no other practical use. Doesnt help a modern MMArtist, or in most cases of self defense either.

  • Awesome vid.

  • i agree, ok if you use muscle, but there is always a guy out their with bigger muscle..

  • thanks for that. i will think of it during my judo classes. keep up the good work!

  • I've seen a few videos with keith owen an I have to say he is an amazing instructor. the way he explains things is really entertaining, clear, and concise.

  • :| at 6,666 views...just a coincidence

  • Great video. I stumbled on this secret myself by accident in my first 5 months of BJJ just kinda... i guess failing at a technique and moving the wrong way but i noticed it made im use weaker muscles and i got where i wanted to be :P

one of the most useful tips any BJJ practitioner will receive.

  • This helps out alot, I just started doing MMA and this helps me out alot.

    Thanks,

  • haha gotta love owens...funny and very smart

  • this really helps alot go pointer! thumbs up

  • Jiu Jitsu Means "The Art of Softness".

  • @thecubeisyou its water in japanese

  • @ dpich053

    Jiu Jitsu (jujutsu in Japanese)

    Jiu= soft

    Jitsu=technique/art/method

The Japanese word for water is "mizu"

  • Very informative, even for a Kenpo guy like myself.

  • Dude that made so much sense!! I could of used that info few years back when I started JJ.

  • great video! Plus the angles commment was spot on, the amount of times where i have tried you rely on strength to get a hold or sub and couldnt, but then just changing the angle to loosen the grip workd 99% of the time!

  • Brilliant explanation of BJJ! Thank you for that.

  • Great video Keith! Very well explained... I'll tell my students to take a look at this video!

  • I wish i had a seminar with one of these guys

  • personally i like judo better but bjj is great to

  • That bit about angles will help me quite a bit I think.

  • @nazdun

I'm no expert in Jiu Jitsu; I came from a wrestling background and then got into mma. I've been training in BJJ now for about four months and I am finally seeing and using angles more. This guy is spot on and I'm happy to hear him giving this speech. Too many shady instructors teach their students to go balls to the wall and have a macho attitude. Their students won't still be rolling at age 40 or 50 either.

  • amazing amazing amazing!!!!!

    i love it so much!

  • shush - don't mention chuck norris! You are putting us all at risk of being round-house kicked to our death.

  • Liked the example he used with pushing the fist to the ground.

  • Great video. Great teacher

  • Awesome video guys.

  • jkwmma i agree he is great to listen to. he has alot of knowledge. 10th planet is lucky to have a guy like him

  • Keith owens is awesome. nice vid

  • beautiful words.

  • all bullshit aside this man is a great teacher. i only wish i have the chance to meet him. thanks agian 101, another great upload.

  • lmfao. the chuck norris jokes never gets old. i like how this guy teaches and it would be great to meet him.

  • kieth owens is so tough, he is the only man that has beaten chuck norris. they agreed to keep it quiet, but chuck norris knows!

  • So how do you know?

  • I know because I train with him 4 or five times a week

  • but jimmy says that chuck norris is the only one that knows

  • you train with these instructors? if so could you tell me where you all train?

  • I tain with Keith In Merdian Idaho just outside of Boise. This was filmed in Canada.

    come in and visit sometime

  • I would but i am sooo far away from there.. and is this just like a judo or bjj school or is it teach all around mma

  • Great video, completely makes sense.

  • It's the entire reason for training in Jiu Jitsu, technique, over power.

  • Mr Keith is great. Thanks for uploading

  • gold, jerry gold!

  • keith owen is so humble and to the point. i love this guy

  • From this brief video, it seems that Keith Owen is an extremely talented instructor. I wish I could be his student. Kudos sir.

  • Great perspective for the art.

    different world without the gi.

  • nice bravo

  • He beat Marcelo at a starring contest.

  • Great ideas as always! Big fan of Mr. Keith Owen

  • Very informative video, he actually explained some practical moves.

  • That was a great video on something you don't hear talked about too often. Great post.

  • Jiujitsu- the sport of the little man!

  • i love this style of fighting cuz you dont have to be the biggest, its just another example of brain of all

  • This is a great guy, great teacher!!

  • hahaha my uncle keith is funny:)

  • Great

  • Awesome Video!

  • Don't attack where they are, attack where they aren't. Strength plays a huge part in jiu-jitsu once you know how to properly use it.

Jiu-jitsu is a lot like breaking down walls. No matter how ard you try, you aren't going to breakdown a brickwall. However, you will go crashing through one made out of paper. What happens when its a wooden wall though? Well, then you need to know not only how to break the wall, but need to be strong enough to do it.

  • I don't think your getting it...

  • TRUE

    funny metaphor though

technique only beats strenghth if the other dude doesn't know jiujitsu but IF you both are at the same page STRENGTH and size does matter.

most people don't know how HUGE roger GRACIE is. he is one tall mother fucker and he is as strong as hell.

i remember DRYSDALE saying he was able to tear he's brand new GI in actual competition.

note: strength doesn't necessarily equate with out looking like the terminator.

  • this was great, thanks

  • Great video

  • Good post

  • I would love to have this guy as a trainer

  • i would love to touch his privates

  • thank you for showing this video ive had the same problem of not being able to get the arm bar in i would just try to force it but now i know >:)

  • Very good lesson here.

  • Makes perfect sense to me. I'm going to remember these technique examples for the next time some one asks me "What is JiuJitsu?" and I'm scrabbling to try to explain the concepts and philosophy in a nutshell.

  • I really like this video..it dosent teach just a technique but a concept that applies to most techniques

  • Good video here guys!

  • Keith Owen is a legend. I think Ari must be the blonde guy. I like him too.

  • So cool i'll take all this into consideration next time I roll, should up my game. Thanks.

  • This video was so cool, my jaw dropped and I peed a little out of excitement.. lol

  • That makes alot of sence man.

Gonna try to remeber this, like im tryin to remember all his teachings you upload on youtube :P

  • This has given me a better understanding of BJJ.

I do boxing an muay thai but I would like to give BJJ a try at some point.

    Good post,

  • i wish there were more bjj teacher like keith owen.he's awesome

  • wow! only 312 views?! now thats something! by the end of today there will b like 5k views

  • laugh..You tube stops counting at 300 ish and then updates every 6 to 12 hours with the new numbers. That is why there is a ? mark next to the numbers. ;-)

  • I am usually more of an Ari fan than Keith Owen, but this video is really great.

  • This video is great! And I am a Keith fan more than me too ;-) The next 10 videos will be Keith Owen and are apart of a series on Side control escapes! Stay tuned my friend!

    Ari

  • @Submissions101 No dude, I am more of a fan or your videos than his. Nothing against his style, I just prefer the purely technical approach that you have, rather than Keith's more anecdotal style. Personal preference. I do watch an enjoy all the submission 101 videos. You guys all know your stuff.

  • very good video. thanks for the upload

  • This guy is so awesome.

  • Lol @ who's guilty of this... EVERYBODY has done that. I wonder if Marcelo is going to have something to say about keith's comment. Seriously, guys great video.

  • thanks for this video

  • Great Theory :D

  • Excellent video reminding people about the basic concept of jiu-jitsu. I really appreciate these videos.
