A former teacher once tells me this: the best time to train jiu jitsu is when you already tired, becacuse even if you are strong, you cannot use it anymore. So what remains is the technique.
Awesome man. He just wants his students to understand because a miseducated student is a very bad reflection on the teacher. People keep saying that there is a martial style of the name "San Shou" which can easily stop the conquering techniques employed by BJJ. I wonder if Keith Owen has a comment for that.
Very good video. In most fights we have one strong, big guy facing other smaller, lighter guy. And the smaller guy ends with his back to the ground. Master Helio Gracie developed his art from this principle: "I am the small guy with my back in the ground. How may I fight?".
Respectfully, I add just one word that I listened training with Royler, a son of Helio Gracie: "leverage". Look for the right lever and you can move the world, your oponent included.
I'll be starting BJJ in the next week or so (I've done bits at my MMA gym already but want to specialise a bit more) and this video is a big help... especially the angles bit at the end.
I'm a bit of a Helio in build so BJJ holds a special appeal to me. :)
@lagook Well, bjj was derived from Japanese jujutsu and jujutsu means "gentle technique". It really should be called Brazilian Ju Jutsu, i don't know why they call it Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
this is very well said, he understands BJJ very well. I am a blue belt and I am also pretty strong and it is a struggle to sometimes forgoe that strength that I have and just use the technique. I am getting better at it, but I learned that strength only gets you so far, once you gas your muscles are useless, and you gas A LOT faster when using pure strength. Good video my man
So very true. Its seem to me that the bigger guys who try to muscle their way into a win are alot more easier to deal with than some one who is smaller and relies on technique.
Perfect instruction. every video i'v watched i feel alittle more empowered. now i want to train in a dojo. i got 18years karate, 1st degree blackbelt and 3years TKD, 2nd degree blackbelt... i'm tired of not knowing ground game. i think its time for some BJJ!
I agree, I am sure be does seminars and I am not for sure about videos you may want to check out his site, budo video or see if they are available for rent at goldstarvideo. I would like some of his videos myself
This vid is awesome, and Keith Owen seems like a great instructor-very articulate, easy going, and competent. If I'm ever in his area I'll be sure to stop by! Thanks!
the way he explains things is sooo incredibly cool, you do even don't try to remember this things, you will recall them not only during the fight or training, i would like to see more!! :)
Hey goatdaddy, NOTHING in this video is different without a gi.Maybe you would rather a one piece or maybe a speedo??A leather jacket or even a light coat can be used like a gi.
great video, i really wish though that more instructors would teach jujitsu without the Gi. Other than competition, jujitsu with the Gi really serves no other practical use. Doesnt help a modern MMArtist, or in most cases of self defense either.
I've seen a few videos with keith owen an I have to say he is an amazing instructor. the way he explains things is really entertaining, clear, and concise.
Great video. I stumbled on this secret myself by accident in my first 5 months of BJJ just kinda... i guess failing at a technique and moving the wrong way but i noticed it made im use weaker muscles and i got where i wanted to be :P
one of the most useful tips any BJJ practitioner will receive.
great video! Plus the angles commment was spot on, the amount of times where i have tried you rely on strength to get a hold or sub and couldnt, but then just changing the angle to loosen the grip workd 99% of the time!
I'm no expert in Jiu Jitsu; I came from a wrestling background and then got into mma. I've been training in BJJ now for about four months and I am finally seeing and using angles more. This guy is spot on and I'm happy to hear him giving this speech. Too many shady instructors teach their students to go balls to the wall and have a macho attitude. Their students won't still be rolling at age 40 or 50 either.
Don't attack where they are, attack where they aren't. Strength plays a huge part in jiu-jitsu once you know how to properly use it.

yeah so brazilian jiu jutsu translates to brazilian gentle technique so if your using too much force then your doing it wrong
742617sic000027 1 year ago
@742617sic000027 dont know what language you used to translate from?
jiu does not mean gentle in any language?
lagook 1 year ago
@lagook Well, bjj was derived from Japanese jujutsu and jujutsu means "gentle technique". It really should be called Brazilian Ju Jutsu, i don't know why they call it Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
742617sic000027 1 year ago
@742617sic000027 a better translation would be ju - flexibilty jutsu practice of ie art
gentle is rather mis translated, i generally spell it jujitsu i dont know why i just do
its not so much gentle eg judo the flexible way isnt gentle at all
the art is more a flexible aproach to grappling
lagook 1 year ago
@lagook Yeah, the whole concept behind bjj is to use the least amount of force to subdue your opponentand thats why I like the word gentle.
According to wiki "Ju" can be translated to "gentle, supple, flexible, pliable, or yielding."
To me it is the most evolved marital art out there... look what Royce Gracie did to all his (much larger) opponents at the very first UFC!

Snoochy2006 2 years ago
TRUE
funny metaphor though
technique only beats strenghth if the other dude doesn't know jiujitsu but IF you both are at the same page STRENGTH and size does matter.
most people don't know how HUGE roger GRACIE is. he is one tall mother fucker and he is as strong as hell.
i remember DRYSDALE saying he was able to tear he's brand new GI in actual competition.
note: strength doesn't necessarily equate with out looking like the terminator.
