5:39 is one of the most memorable notes ever hit on a guitar floating over a crescendo of power, melody and emotion, fantastic and quite possibly the best song ever written in my humble opinion.
@jazzflyers No, the real last song is a bonus track called She Likes Surprises. It was probably another way to end the album until that robin smashed into Cornell's door.
Every... I mean everyyytime I listen to this song I'm flying, floating, swimming, riding through the crazy mind wishing to never get out. Just stick to the imagine of perfect world, without pain and all the stuff. Just peace and calm provided by perfect guitar solo and drums that smash my head so hard. Fuckin love it.
@KidScipio this most definitely Soundgarden. If you can't tell the difference between Eddie Veddar and Chris Cornell, then you have absolutely NO business listening to ANYTHING from the '90's. Why don't you go put on some Justin Beiber.
@KidScipio Look, buddy, this is Soundgarden. It's one of the best songs off their best album, Superunknown. I understand that everyone on Limewire and Frostwire mislabels the artists, because they're idiots, but I assure you this is Cornell singing.
This song is about how one day a bird flew in through Chris's open window and broke it's neck on impact. Chris had to put it out of it's misery with a brick, and he wrote this song.
@Uzzie101 im not trying to say im better than anybody im just saying most people dont listen to music that is this complex and they would be blown away by it
i was at the first show of there tour this summer back on july 2nd...........when this was played the sky was lit up by lightning......couldnt have asked mother nature for anything better

@tsbproject very well put. this best album of all time. when i listen to superunknown, it creates a different world around me, a new and unique perspective. something one could only feel through the soundwaves of soundgarden.
Killerbee80 - settle down Glen Becks son, you know blowing shit up and killing people isn't the only way to resolve things right? I remember I used to be an asshole just like you, and then I lost my virginity, Go watch Toby Keith videos.
MY LAST DITCH,,, WAS MY LAST BREATHE----- Remember that Liberals, civil war is coming,, u cannot win ,, u will be destroyed ..THE UNITED STAES OF AMERICA IS THE GREATEST COUNTRY EVER < AND WE WILL DESSTROY U ( DEATH) TO KEEP IT.. I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT--JUST LIKE SUICIDE
@Killerbee80 easy there dude... Cornell wrote this song about a time when he was lying in bed and a bird flew into his window and broke its neck but it didn't kill it, he had to give it the coup de grace with the only thing handy which was a brick. I think the point of the song for him was that senseless death like that is a sad thing.
I went to germany in 1994, i visited a german family with my parents. and i opted for their basement, with one CD, guess which one? and guess what year it was released?!
When i listen to this song, I have some strange feeling...It is not feeling that I would like to kill myself...It is feeling that no one can kill me...that I am immortal.
The octave intro to the solo starting at 4:32 is in my top 5 soundgasms of all time! The bell ride cymbal and the octave guitar.. the feedback buildup into one of the best guitar solos of all time.. it's one of the greatest pieces of 90 music ever.
Metallica is more popular than Soundgarden. Besides, "pop" can also refer to music that is somewhat simple to play and "hummable." That doesn't always good or bad or mainstream. The Beatles were pop, that doesn't mean they're bad at all. Neutral Milk Hotel could also be described as pop music, but they're definitely not mainstream. Back to the point, Soundgarden's songs are not very 'catchy', they consist of too many complexities liked mixed time signatures, etc.
I thought of this song a few days ago when my mother and I saw a huge hawk swoop down and snag a robin in her yard. We both started to yell but then realized if we scared the hawk off, we'd be left with a slowly dying robin. I heard in my head "how I feel for you" as the hawk flew off with the robin in his claws.
Reminisent of My Good Eye CLosed.....one of THE best albums ever to come out of the 90's!! I still have this album in my car....why? Cause I like good music......
There were so many sad and gloomy songs from the 90s, everything from this black beauty to Radiohead's “Creep” to Tool's "Sober" to RHCP's "Under The Bridge" to all of Alice In Chains & NIN's work. I think the poseurs hated grunge/industrial because the music didn't jibe with their 'Friends, Zima & Spin Doctors' worldview. Personally, I will always treasure the angry rock of the early-mid 90s because it was real, & it made such a powerful statement about the darkside of the human condition.
I've always thought that the quality and tone of Matt's drums in this album are beyond perfect, and I love how he kicks into the song hard near the end... feels as if he was really hitting me right in the face, even now... after so many years when this was released...
Chris Cornell was writing a song one day when he heard a thump on the side of his house. He went outside and found a bird lying in his garden, twitching and dying. He crushed it with a brick to put it out of its misery. It affected him so much that he went inside and wrote this song.
i wish there were more kids like me. you know, kids that love soundgarden to death.
this is my favorite song by them, and infact one of my favorite songs in the world. drum fills are phonominal, solo is wicked, and chris cornell's vocals are at his best in this song.
If Soundgarden's lyrics were just printed in a book as poetry, I would buy the book and treasure it. With the music, I just about die everytime I hear one of their songs. The first time I heard this, I literally felt a shiver go up my spine, and the shivers still come every time I hear this song. I don't care if it sounds overdramatic, it's true.
Soungarden is and was around before Nirvana even got a record deal! So these fine gentleman are the precursor's to the whole grunge transition...and even if it was not their intention, Nirvana became what Cobain despised, which is why in my opinion, their sound didn't evolve, Cobain sold his soul and tried to get it back and it ended him... either embrace yourself or burnout and die!
@frostling27 Nirvana's sound didnt evolve that much because they were only mainstream for about 3 years. they released only 1 studio album after nevermind and it sounded a lot different from the previous album, so dont give me that bs
@zikilovesgenesis Soungarden is and was around before Nirvana even got a record deal! Cobain sold his soul and tried to get it back and it ended him... either embrace yourself or burnout and die!
you can speculate all you want, but it is what it is... so get over it... I didn't sell out and get strung out on heroin, thats why they failed... so you can ride the wave or crash and burn ;)
@richards4441 No, it's not about suicide, it's about a death LIKE suicide. See the story about the bird. It's about his sorrow at the way the bird died, LIKE suicide.
Yet another reason why Soundgarden (then) were tragically underrated. Now, Chris' voice is shot and they don't compare to then, but that's no one's fault. Just an amazing creative band that made up a huge part of my formulative music listening years.
I love this song. Chris had a great rythym guitar, while at the same time Kim's lead was sort of barely organized noise, yet it all came together to form one of the greatest albums, possibly one of the greatest bands of the early 1990's. I love Soundgarden now, as much as I did then.
Grunge is just dumb label that MTV put on seattle bands just to package and market it easier. In reality it was just some great rock bands from seattle, wa.
I love how around the 4 and a half minute mark, the song just lets go and allows you to get lost in it's alluring sound. Is soundgarden the greatest band of recent years or what?
one nobs bent finger must have slipped on the dislike button,, tutt tutt !!!
i hate the word "GRUNGE",but if that's what people want to call it, then suondgarden are (were) by far the best. that's what i think neway so don't giv me lip for havin an opinion : )
Man, these guys had lightning in a bottle. I absolutely WRECKED this album in tape format. These guys really shoved thoughtful melody into the grunge sound.
I hope this stuff goes on to be appreciated like the Zeppelin stuff is today.
This song...this song right here. This song is a journey through the depths of each individual member of Soundgarden's mind. Incredible. Odd time signatures, a slow buildup to a well deserved roundhouse kick to the face to whoever's listening - and they excecute it in a way that you're actually begging for more by the end.
This is one of the many reasons that the Grunge movement is one of the greatest musical movements in history. Believe that shit.
@LobotomyMadeEasy I agree, 90's were some of the best times for music. Originaly was suddenly the key to make a great band, and every band back then started to find their own styles. Goddamn, I love that era!
@LobotomyMadeEasy I agree with everything you've said, to add to it and this is just a personal opinion, Soundgarden and Alice in chains were in my opinion the two rawest and riff-oriented bands to come out of the grunge movement, theyre my favorites. which doesnt mean that i dont like nirvana or pearl jam, love those bands too, but as far as technical proficiency goes, soundgarden, aic take the crown.
@LobotomyMadeEasy I'd have to say unfortunately, "Grunge" was the idiotic name and label MTV gave the 90's Seattle music scene. all in all, it was just good fuckin music man. Thats all it was and there will never be music like this, i am sad to see my children never experience a movement like this....grunge is dead, but rock n roll will always live!!!
Soundgarden did use a lot of odd time signatures but i don't believe this is an example... great song tho one of my favs... they played this the other day in Boston. Isn't this 4/4?? i am not a musician so i'm no expert but whatever.
Always loved this song but havent heard it in over a year, About 90 seconds in started crying, beautiful memories. God bless Soundgarden

Superunknown was the first CD I ever owned.
Little did I know, at the time, it would also be the best I would ever own.
I have a rule that my rock has to have some feeling or some drive in it.
Soundgarden fit the criteria, pain, love, loss, passion, adrenaline. It was all there.
This tune, magic.
I still remember where I was when I heard Soundgarden had broken up.
Hope the "regrouping" leads to more tunes like this one.

I love this song. Chris had a great rythym guitar, while at the same time Kim's lead was sort of barely organized noise, yet it all came together to form one of the greatest albums, possibly one of the greatest bands of the early 1990's. I love Soundgarden now, as much as I did then.

Who searches up music on youtube just to dislike it?
Williamshatnerfag69 1 year ago 4
Grunge is just dumb label that MTV put on seattle bands just to package and market it easier. In reality it was just some great rock bands from seattle, wa.

I love how around the 4 and a half minute mark, the song just lets go and allows you to get lost in it's alluring sound. Is soundgarden the greatest band of recent years or what?

best band of the 90s.

Man, these guys had lightning in a bottle. I absolutely WRECKED this album in tape format. These guys really shoved thoughtful melody into the grunge sound.
I hope this stuff goes on to be appreciated like the Zeppelin stuff is today.

Only Cornell could write lyrics about a bird that ran into his window and make them sound like they're talking about something else at the same time.

@LobotomyMadeEasy that's fuckin deep!
do you know what the initial meaning to this song is??
danthatcan2 1 year ago
@danthatcan2 its about a bird that flew into cornells window and broke its neck, chris put it out of its misery by smashing it with a brick

@LobotomyMadeEasy My sentiments exactly what a ride this song takes the listener on.

@LobotomyMadeEasy How are there odd time signatures in this song? This song is purely 4/4.
It was only Superunknown as an album that had odd time signatures...and was better for it.

@LobotomyMadeEasy
Soundgarden did use a lot of odd time signatures but i don't believe this is an example... great song tho one of my favs... they played this the other day in Boston. Isn't this 4/4?? i am not a musician so i'm no expert but whatever.
