this is becz of a "Martensitic Phase Transformation". Materials can recover up to 2% strain with this transformation when subjected to a change in temperature (Critical transformation temperature).

Though in metals the recoverable strain is low, it is high in polymers. Some polymers can recover strains as high as 1100%.
