I thought squirels bite. you got guts...i still run when they get to close if they dont run from me first. haha thats not wat i wanted to say though...I wanted to tell you i think your hair is gorgeous....but i couldnt get past that squirel. stay blessed.
I'm not sure of the color because this was loooong ago. But Ive dyed my hair various shades of brown. The lighter colors are more damaged because they have to strip color from your hair, which makes your hair more susceptible to damage. It depends on your hair type if your hair can take it. I dont mean straighter hair cant take it, I mean tougher hair. My hair strands are really fine and weaker than most people's hair so I have to be extra careful with color.
In general, you'd want to be careful if you try it. I would suggest you get a professional to do it at first. (I never did though lol) But besides getting a correct application, they will give you tips to maintain strong hair while keeping the color vibrant. If you are short on $ you can look at ladykpnyc's video and she does a video about keeping your hair healthy with color. I say, have fun with your hair!!! :)
i decided last night to begin my natural journey...i just wanted to know do i really have to do the big chop or can i transition without it and trim along the way?your vid is so inspiring love your hair
Thanks! You dont HAVE to do the big chop if you dont want to. You can transition and trim a little off as you go along. You can wear braids, braidouts, twistouts, etc. Theres lots of sites to give info, if you want it, I can send it to your inbox.
Yeah, in one part I twisted my hair (damp) and rolled the twists on rollers. Then I took it down and finger combed it out. But theres lots of other techniques
if you c a picture everyday you will get use to it , during the 70"s black woman hair was so natural & sexy whites were copying it, When my daughter watches TV all she sees is different races of woman wearing the same bone straight hair style. she drew a picture of a black girl with straight hair. after removing the TV and letting her watch old reruns of the electric company she now draws pictures of black woman and men with Afros. images don't tells lies. the people who alter there images lies
Hey girl, i know what you mean with the idea that nappy hair isn't beautiful being drilled into your head. I'm trying to go natural now, but i'm very timid b/c i was raised getting my hair permed.
i love your hair and this is a nice video. it's so cute how you're feeding the squirrels @ 2:46 and @ 3:15
Ooh girl that is my jam,I enjoyed the music and those beautiful pics. I was going to get up and dnace, but then I didn't want to miss anything so I am just happy you appreciate how blessed you are.
Whether you like it not the problem is...this country and this society has placed high value on light skin and because of that it has placed you in a situation that either dark skin people hate on you or you think that's how it is and it makes you defensive. Have you ever used your invisible priviledge by ebing light?
Keepyoureyeonlexi...what is up with you? I saw you somewhere else cussing and recking havoc posting on You Tube about light versus dark skin. It sounds like you have been hurt badly by people because you are light skinned. I am so sorry for that and very sorry that folks hurt you in that way. What you should also recognize is that dark skinned people have been hurt as well by their own people.
I definately agree that just because you are natural doesnt mean you are a "strong Black woman". I dont use that phrase at all. But yeah, some Black women that happen to be raised w/people that didnt drill into them that nappy hair is bad usually wears their hair natural, or some people believe they have "good hair" so they are allowed to be natural, etc etc.
You never know what people are thinking just from their hair. I disagree that its just a preference though, most times our preferences seem to be our personal, individual choices but in the long run, we have things behind it. I preferred to have straight hair before but only because I was taught that nappy hair couldnt be beautiful unless it was straightened and that my hair had to be (appear to be) the longest I could get it.
I could only do that with straight hair. It wasnt until I admitted to myself that certain things throughout my life had shaped my preference, was when I could decide what would be best for me and not care about what other people think. And it was a process, it wasnt instant, but we are socialized into believing a lot of the things we believe and we usually say its just a preference, when usually its much more complex.
Black people (Africans) shouldn't conform to Eurocentric styles, fashions, plastic surgeries (to look more euro). Now should Europeans try to look more African. People should respect and adore their own culture and physical characteristics. The PROBLEM is that the Eurocentric
You obviously lack the insight to take your point further. The question you should be asking is: How does an individual determine that they are ugly? Now various factors come into play. 1) The parental role and just how their parents viewed beauty (did their parent, for example, make fun of dark skin, kinky hair, larger noses).
Ahhh i'd first like to commend u for ur well organized defense. Actually its awesome. But here's mine: Fitst of all i do have the insight to take my point farther i guess u can say that was my "openning statement" Now, heres what i dont get. Why people have the nerve to say that light skinned black people are in some cases not considered "real black people" This is something thats always bothered me
I am not sure who you are referring to, as I never said light skinned Africans are not "real Black people" I said that society often gives the opportunities to the light skinned blacks and/or those Blacks (of all hues) that conform t o Eurocentric forms of beauty. The BROWN PAPER BAG test is still in effect in both the Black and broader community.
Oh sorry i know you didnt say that is just that was just a "burning" question of mine. But im not sure if the point of that last statement about conforming to Eurocentric is. Are you saying tahat black ppe shouldnt conform to Eurocentric style or just simply saying that people who do that are given more opportunities
thinking often has RACISISM built in thus conforming leads to less DRAMA from the OPPRESSING group (who happen to be the ruling class and basically European). This doesn't make ALL Europeans racist. But the majority benefit from racism (G8 nations, sweat shops, Minimum wage for underclass, etc) while the Black elite benefit by playing the "assimilation game".
HONESTLY, I think that black people or any other race can confoirm to a differnt culture if they want as long as they dont take it to far such as plastic surgery. If they simply like the style than its find it really deosnt have anything to do with thing to look more Euro
The majority of black women in America believe that straighter hair is "good" hair, and that nappy hair is "bad" hair. They conform to European standards because of that belief as well as because in some places natural hair styles like loc, are "frowned upon". Also, a lot of times they have been told that their hair is unmanageable and that they need it straightened in order to handle it. There are so many myths out there about nappy hair, and it's sad to see so many black women believe them.
well i believe u can have any hair that u want no matter who u are is has nothing to do what people say. ANd those hairstyles are fowned upon in most places , but that doesnt matter. You should do whats best for you
So slathering caustic chemicals that have the same ingredients as DRANO every 6 weeks on your hair "best" for you? There's nothing wrong with changing your style up, but when you have people chemically processing their hair and negatively berating the hair they were BORN with, there's a problem. When you see children with relaxer damage, there's a problem. When the MINORITY black woman spends the majority of money in the US that goes towards hair care, there's a problem.
well i have never had a perm so i cant say..... But i do flat iron my hair. I do feel sorry 4 lil girls at the beauty shop crying over a burning perm. Not everyone with straight hair has a perm. But some people cant handle natural hair and some cant some cant handle straight. Again i say do whats best for u
2) Media: What images do cartoons show as SUPPOSEDLY ugly or images to be laughed at. 3) Educational system: Constantly belittles most things dark or African. 4) Churches: That fail to portray the truth about Africa, etc. 5) Corporate America: Where lighter skinned Africans and those that conform to Eurocentric dress and forms forms of beauty are more likely to be promoted, hired, etc.
I have the perfect example. Some years ago i had a teacher who was dark skinned. She would always tell us of stories of how the lioght skinned girls were always picked for stuff and things like that. And then me being light skinned was of course "shunned" She hated me basically and then lied about things that i had done and loved my dark skin friends but hated me and those that were white in my class.
All the women in my life have natural hair. Well some jump back into the Eurocentric look, but I encourage them to stay natural. No need for Europeans or Africans to be unnatural. Everyone is beautiful but the schools, media, etc have Blacks thinking they're ugly.
if a black person thinks they're ugly u cnt blame it on the media or anything like that. If someone in general thiks they're ugly its beacuse thats what thry what them and them alone thinks when they look in their own mirror
6) Social circles, where jokes are often made (in the urban community) if a woman has natural hair, dark skin, etc. (You often hear Black men shout, when two women are walking and one is dark, one light: "Hey light skin/mango skin beauty I like you." 7) Music videos, particularly Hispanic ones (and Hispanic TV) where dark is portrayed as negative.
I even herd her say " the world would be much easier if we didnt have those light skins and whites bringin' us down!!' WTF is that?? It makes no sense.
So my point here is gigagroove is why are people consantly telling me or other light skinned people that i think that dark skinned people are ugly , it think i'm all that, i'm trying to be white cuz have i white friends and straight hair thats long and the most common Are you mixed?
So is the insecurities of dark skinned people put on light skinned ppl and white ppl? because i hear ppl say that and i hate it
Thanks for posting this video. =D I want to wear my natural hair out, but I don't really have much experience with it as far as styling/detangling. Heck, I don't have any, haha.
How difficult would you say detangling is?
Did you learn how to cornrow/flat-twist prior to growing your relaxer out?
I didnt have a relaxer. But I knew how to braid since I was about 11/12. I learned to flat twist recently because no one ever done that around me before. I dont think detangling is hard. There are several techniques you can use, parting your hair in sections. Detangling before washing and plaiting in four plaits to prevent tangling. Its all pretty easy to me. It depends on your hair type and what you do and the health of your hair though.
Thanks for the prompt and thorough response! It's just that I was told that I'm too tenderheaded to have natural hair, and I'm armed with knowledge about how to handle my natural hair, but I'm a little apprehensive about taking that leap on my own.
If you comb your hair correctly it shouldnt hurt. Use a wide tooth comb and only use the thinner combs or parting. Comb your hair when its damp..not SUPER wet or SUPER dry. You shouldnt hurt when you comb. Let me know if you have any questions. Im sure you would do just fine!
hi can u tell me what is better to cut off my hair or grow it out where it i can jus cut it off where it can reach to a desired lenth then i can cut it i like ur video alot can u give me some advice plz
