Senator Byrd had the dignity, humility, integrity and honesty to regret as well as apologize for his youthful racism. In 2005 he said, "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."
He was a great leader, a statesman like none we will see in the remainder of our lifetimes, who did support the Civil Rights Act and defended the constitution with vigor. Let it be.

Byrd understands one thing. The constitution. There are only a handful of constitutionalists left and when they die or are run out we will be left with nothing. Ron Paul is another. I am not, nor will I ever be a Ron Paul supporter, but he is an American and should be respected for his adoration and protection of the constitution and system of checks and balances it has created.

Your problem is that you don't understand federalism. The states are supposed to chip in to fund the basic functions of the US Government. If West Virginia needs more jobs and better schools, it's the state's responsibility, not the feds. The problem with liberals is they have the pecking order backwards. The 10th amendment underlines it. Power is supposed to start locally, then downward to the federal government.

The US Government is a thief when it spends beyonds it's constitutional limits. The founders set the government's boundaries because they understood man's imperfections. Since the beginning of time, men have strived to enslave others. By taxing us, then holding it over our heads in order to control our behavior is an act of enslavement. Byrd buys votes from his constituents with everyone else's money. And that's the problem with earmark spending.

Senator Byrd had the dignity, humility, integrity and honesty to regret as well as apologize for his youthful racism. In 2005 he said, "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."
He was a great leader, a statesman like none we will see in the remainder of our lifetimes, who did support the Civil Rights Act and defended the constitution with vigor. Let it be.

Byrd understands one thing. The constitution. There are only a handful of constitutionalists left and when they die or are run out we will be left with nothing. Ron Paul is another. I am not, nor will I ever be a Ron Paul supporter, but he is an American and should be respected for his adoration and protection of the constitution and system of checks and balances it has created.

Your problem is that you don't understand federalism. The states are supposed to chip in to fund the basic functions of the US Government. If West Virginia needs more jobs and better schools, it's the state's responsibility, not the feds. The problem with liberals is they have the pecking order backwards. The 10th amendment underlines it. Power is supposed to start locally, then downward to the federal government.

The US Government is a thief when it spends beyonds it's constitutional limits. The founders set the government's boundaries because they understood man's imperfections. Since the beginning of time, men have strived to enslave others. By taxing us, then holding it over our heads in order to control our behavior is an act of enslavement. I found the links that cited his massive spending. On one hand I am tempted to say that it is wront that our money is wasted. On the other hand, I don't detect any scent of corruption (as was the case for Ted Stevens). Byrd is legally funding his state to please his constituents. You could even argue that he is even justified because West Virginia is one of the poorest states in the nation. In any case, his "highway to nowhere" seemed ill planned.

Construction continues on another phase and the hwy will eventually meet the unfinished portion completing the hwy. Again, I'd advise you not to put all of your faith in the network news broadcasts.

Yeah, I guess because we love our country, we have a sense of humor. We are the state that has served at a higher percentage in the military than ANY other state in the Union. Senator Byrd has fought for the Constitution for years, and he has always been on West Virginia's side. He has given a voice to those without a voice, and I really can't imagine our state without him as a United States Senator. Unfortunately, he is likely the last great American statesman.

This guy might be old, and he might be a bit slow, and he might have a bad past (KKK), but his heart is in the right place when it comes to loyalty to his country. I'm proud to know that Robert Byrd has served this country for so many years and was one of the few to vote against the war in Iraq.
