It was a Sunday in 2003 at Manna Bible Baptist Church. CJ was on the bulletin to sing two selections before Pat Kelly, a former B' More Orioles, preached the sermon. 13-year-old CJ Hilton sang “That Name” and “The Day He Wore My Crown.” His voice filled the church’s sanctuary. Since the days when CJ revealed his potential to his congregation, he has been nominated for a Grammy. CJ comes from a family of musically inclined people. CJ’s father, Larry Hilton, has made several musical albums.
I told CJ Hilton's grandmother, Naomi Hilton, that people are talking about how CJ's voice sounds like Marvin Gaye. And she said that she disagreed; she claimed that CJ sounds like her son, CJ's father. I think Marvin Gaye is cooler, but Brother Larry Hilton can sing good too.
“Never Give You Up” was nominated for a Grammy. Although Stevie Wonder’s presence in “Never Give You Up” helped, it’s noteworthy that CJ sang for a long part of the song. Like CJ, Stevie Wonder’s musical career began at an early age. At the age of 12, Stevie Wonder sang “Fingertips,” as 24-year-old Marvin Gaye accompanied. Eventually, “Fingertips” was released. CJ has striven to capture an old R&B style in his own music. In “Never Give You Up,” CJ’s voice resembles that of the late Marvin Gaye.
That one part 0:59-1:04 (oh then she'll look and it's so sweet) reminds exactly of Marvin Gaye especially Marvin Gaye's style in his I Want You album. Cj Hilton is incredibly talented!
CJ Hilton can sing so well! Marvin Gaye is one of his inspirations and he is as talented as him. I think it's cool that he used to go to Manna Bible Baptist Church in Baltimore and now he is getting more acclaimed everyday. It's impressive that Raphael Saadiq featured him alongside of Stevie Wonder in "Never Give You Up." I'm glad that CJ recognizes Marvin Gaye in all of his interviews because Marvin Gaye is one of my favorite Soul artists. He doesn't need autotune; he's just that talented!
Heard this song at my dad's 50th birthday on friday, every since i can not stop listening to this song, reminds me so much of him: the type of music he plays and when i was a little girl he always played all of the good oldies from his day. This isn't a song from that era but still puts me in that time when he used to pick me up every weekend and spend the whole weekend with me. Even though he lived in dayton oh at the time and i lived in Columbus oh and he will play all the
To be honest, even back during the Tony, Toni, Tone days he has been keeping it real, always great work and always under rated, "unsung" because of the more popular commercial/overproduced/dubbed up and sampled so called music of today.
Classically trained musician here. I use my benchmarks for accessing black music as Greg Perry -Come on Down and Heatwave-Star of a Story. This falls way short of that and most other songs in the halcean days of black music...70,s and 80.s.. Listen to both the songs i mentioned and you will see what i have said is true.
that said its a lot better than most of the shite that comes out these days.
While I respect your opinion and taste of music as an old school R&B/Jazz listener myself, this couldn't really compare to what has been produced in the 70's. However, I could easily identify the early Marvin Gaye and Smokey Robinson influence (late 60's) in this song, which does go back a bit further. And for that reason I enjoy this a lot. Whatever you do, let's keep old school alive. Take care.
Professional Jazz/Funk/R&B musician here. The two songs you mention don't even come close to defining or standing out from the history of great black music in America. Try going to the Stax records catalogue or Muscle Shoals, maybe Ray Charles if you want to "access" black music. I find the fact that you feel the need to validate your opinion by saying that you are classically trained a bit pompous and unneccesary. Get the whole history together man!
@rupertreddle Utter rubbish. Make the effort and dig. Your background is irrelevant to your "point". Great music has always been made; it's just getting harder to sift through the rubbish to get to it.
U R THE REASON I LOVE MUSIC AGAIN! U, JILL, MUSIQ, ANTHONY, MARSHA, HAMILTON, TIMOTHY, CORRINE, AND A FEW OTHERS ARE THE ONLY ONES IN MY PLAYLIST BESIDES THE OL' SCHOOL STUFF!
I personally believe The Way I See It is better than Stone Rollin, because the song doesn't seem to fit or match his voice; and personally I believe the lyrics is better on this album.
NPR just put up a full stream of the entire new Raphael Saadiq record on First Listen!! “Stone Rollin’” is such a great record and it has gotten tons of great reviews. They loved it, I do too—you should check it out.
