  • @donnad23 I was not talking about testing for medical disorders. I was talking about testing for intolerance to certain personal care products for which this method is extremely useful. (Though I agree the term "diagnostic kineasiology is extremely misleading, sorry!). I went weak on the cup as did another person in the clinic. I doubt your professor will know anything about this method. Then again I doubt he or any conventional doctor could help me with PCOS like my naturopath did...

  • sorry can you tell me how your nauropath tested for intolerance? remember EVERYONES body is different! although you went weak i did not and i have endo and possibly pcos. your body along with the other patient might be allergic to something in the product and your body is sensitive to that produce. it doesnt mean its a bad product it means YOUR body is sensitive to it and had a reaction. my ob/gyn is also a nauropath on the side so im sure he knows about this if i ask him

  • I have no scientific knowledge. Just "gut" and my gut tells me that this man has a point. Menstrual blood is not designed to be "collected" inside the body but to leave it as nature intended. I was really into cups when I first found out about them for ecological reasons but now want to switch to reusable cloth pads and at a push... one of those organic sponges. I don't think the back flow argument counts in the case of lying down at night as even then blood still comes out of the body.

  • The idea of retrograde menstruation is a myth that has been debunked by basic science.

First of all, they used to argue that women could not be upside down while on their period, because of retrograde menstruation.

BUt that doesn't make sense because, actually, your vaginal canal is not "upside down" unless you are laying down. So what would women do when they are sitting, or laying down?

Endometriosis *might* be linked to tampons, but not for that reason. Cups have no affect on this

  • this is NOT true. im 20 and ive had endo since i was 10 (officially diagnosed at 17) i cannot use tampons ot pad because i swell and it makes my cramps worse. i switched to the mentraual cup and had NO issues. tampons contain dioxins which can cause endometriosis. menstraul cups are medical grade sillicone and dont contain dioxins which is safe for your health

  • @donnad23 Sadly I was an enthusiast until I tested mooncupuk with my naturopath (using diagnostic muscle testing) and we found the so called medical grade silicone to be toxic for me and another longterm female user. The safest and most eco way of dealing with periods is reusable sanitary towels... (though slightly less convenient.) I am also intruigued by the "sponges" out there. If you want to keep on with cups at least change material to the latex keeper or meluna. The silicone is NOT safe xx

  • @JBO2493 do you realize that the diagnositic muscle testing isnt a definate testing for disorders? diagnostic testing is only an examination not a diagnosis or conclusion! there has to be more research on the silicone rather than examine it. if you dont mind please tell me the procedure you and your nautopath used to test the silicone? im premed and i graduate this year so when i start medical school this year i will ask my professor about this method

  • There are nothing in this damn world that has absolutely no side affects. Tampons have TSS risks but not everyone gets them endometriosis has connections with menstrual cups? Screw you, it doesn't happen to everyone and impretty sure it's genetic

  • Thank you! After 2 years of being vilified for trying to explain some of the basic physiology behind the use of these products, it's gratifying to receive a comment that reflects the spirit behind the video.

Some of the manufacturers have at least mentioned the issue in their packaging, but none have tried studying the question. The FDA cited the "physiological plausibility" of the concerns, but the organization does not seem to have the testicular fortitude to act on behalf of the consumers.

  • Personally I think it is very considerate and generous of him to bring up the potential concerns of this product for the health and safety of women.

Worth considering and worth more research. Excellent video expressing the "Potential Concerns" of these products. Thank You!

  • Although he sounds like a knowledgeable man, his argument remains unproven. The only way that the menstrual flow would leave the cup would be if the woman were to stand on her head as in gymnastics or other such activities. Even if that happened, the cervix would not permit the back-flow of blood that it has already passed, since it would be a momentary "splash." Also, the blood would have to flow through the cervix, uterus and back to the fallopian tubes which is is highly unlikely.

  • Don't count on the FDA to care. The FDA approved aspartame as well which causes brain tumors. What makes you think they care about a bunch of women getting endometriosis?

  • wow what a video. i mean it makes since that there could be a medical problem with it, but come on pads and tampons are soaked in all types of chemicals that we don't even know what they are, so y don't you do a video about them, can u imagine tampons that can't be flushed, floating around on the ground, gross!! AIDS written all over it. i would rather stick with a cup any day. the next problems we need to work on is diapers. Cloth diapers all the way baby!!

  • He's a dick without a clue (no pun intended)

  • Then you would get back flow when the tampon is too full and is blocking the opening, and bamm same thing...lol...I like the in the 80 years if existence there has been no cases...Endometriosis I thought was in your DNA, if you mom has it you will too...if there was this BIG problem than why can you still buy it and no government involvement in this? Doesn't the government have to get their hands on anything that can cause tumors!!! come on...it's 2010!

  • Of course, a fucking man. What would this stupid son of a bitch know? I'd like to shove a menstrual cup down his throat to shut him up. Let's see, we can't use tampons, we can't use the cup. What are they going to say next about pads? I suppose we're supposed to shove a sock in our underwear? This guy makes me sick. He doesn't have to worry about having his period. Maybe we should start talking about what he should do about his prostate.

  • There are scare theories with every product, the public needs to be scared of everything and look to our wonderful wonderful government for guidance. Surely if I don't get a hefty bout of endometriosis every morning after 8 hours of lying down, standing upright for 5 hours with a cup that holds all the fluid before emptying is not going to kill me.

  • Soon we will need a prescription for a tampon. How do you like that for regulation ladies?

  • Women endometrial tissue has been found in many parts of the body. The Knee, breasts and even the brain on very rare occasions. It is not caused by back flow. It is caused because these rouge cells were on the outside of the "uterus" or they were always in the wrong part of the body to begin with. I have endometriosis and my doctor has talked to me extensively about this. She thinks you are full of it.

  • When this old fucker grows a vagina, then I'll consider giving up my Diva Cup.. :)

  • @pisceslady71 If he does, you should mail it to him instead of tossing it out ;)

  • This is a load of bull. I've been using the Lunette menstrual cup for a few months and my period has gotten shorter and I don't have cramps anymore.

  • LIES! LIES!!

  • "They"just don't want to loose business,if women realize the CUP IS BETTER NO CHANCE OF TSS ONE OF IT'S MANY BENEFITS

  • If you're not aware... every box of tampons comes with a warning for a potential cause of TSS........

  • This is a load of crap...this guy must be getting paid by tampax to do this....

how on earth can "back-flow" from a menstrual cup cause this?

Women's bodies cramp and ache for days just to squeeze the menstrual flow through that tiny cervix opening. You are telling me that, by the defiance of gravity, blood will flow back up through the microscopic opening? what about lying down at night? 8 hours of flowing backwards must have some effect! right? No. this is bullshit. FDA plausible my ASS

  • Rubbish. I highly doubt you're even qualified. It wouldn't squeeze it back into the uterus, and most people would empty it before that stage- do you realise how much fluid those things can hold?

Also I thinkt he risk of TSS would be much higher than this, if it even happens.

  • "Menstrual retention devices"? He came with an eight syllable term for menstrual cups, but he still says gut? This guy obviously has no knowledge of how cups work, and seems to struggle with simple concepts like gravity. Either he's being paid by tampax or he's just an idiot.

  • Very informative and well done...., but I still think they should read the Arizona Illegal Immigration legislation BEFORE they comment about it....!!!

  • oh what the F is he on........ if he is a real doctor then i from mars...

  • You have no business causing such strife for these many women who are affected by endometriosis each year; I am but one of the many. There is enough pain, suffering, and anxiety caused by this disease without you going out of your way to try and cause more through speculation. Science is not based on speculation or theory, it is based on endless research and proven tests. Please, keep your false information to yourself. Your false claims are inappropriate and inexcusable.

  • Tampons hold fluid at the cervix and would presumably keep fluid from flowing out through the very small opening. Again, not that you can just put something back through the cervix when your body is expelling it via hormones and muscle contractions in the uterus. Please, do not speak to this type of feminine hygiene product unless you actually have hard evidence and have truly conducted clinical trials with hundreds of candidates of all ages, sizes, and disease or non-disease affected women.

  • First of all, your abdomen is not referred to as the "gut" in the medical community. Starting with the correct terms would be the start to some kind of credibility (which, I do not think you have). Second, would you not think that cups would be a better choice since they let blood flow away and out through the cervix? (It's not as if you can force something back through the cervix with its opening near the size of a pin head.)

  • If a womens blood were to overflow and go into her uterus, she would have to wear a cup for a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time! Idiot.

  • so what? tampons could cause TSS! but they're OBVIOUSLY still used.

  • hmmm

  • Seriously? I don't believe he has absolutely no connection to tampon/pad companies, otherwise he'd do some real research and figure out that his theory has no validity. Cups LEAK, and most cervixes aren't huge black holes of doom that suck in everything that isn't absorbed into chemically-treated cotton. I don't know about the ones he was looking at in his super-duper scientific research that had no corporate connection at all.

  • not only do you have no knowledge of medicine or female anatomy, clearly the concept of GRAVITY fails to clue you in to the fact that your assumptions are wrong.

quick, better tell gymnasts and circus performers not to do anything on their period, otherwise they'll get endo! and all women must sleep standing up to stop backflow!!! *eyeroll*

  • well this person has OBVIOUSLY not done his research. when a cup is full it does overflow and acts nothing like his eyedropper metaphor.

  • This guy has obviously never used a cup. Obviously!

  • This guy infuriates me. He overflows with ignorance just as a cup overflows when it's full.

  • And also, if you look at the website for the "organization" this guy belongs to, you'll find that it's pretty shady.

  • Why do men think that they get to have anything to say about periods? Blargh.

This isn't even a valid theory. Cups do seal, but lots of things can break that seal, including the cup being full. And when the seal breaks or the cup's full, it leaks. That said, even if it didn't, there would have to be quite a lot of force for anything to get through the cervix. Ladies, please don't let this guy put you off cups. They are really great products and make periods so much more bearable.

  • Why is the video trying to make it look so scary? Surely good science should be based on emotionally detached research?

  • This is hardly a valid study. This is theory. Anyone who writes the FDA based on these "findings" is a fool.

Where is ANY hard data showing if endometriosis is more prominent in the UK or other country where use if menstrual cups is more common? Better yet, conduct a full study over the lifetime of women using specific products. This video should be given no credence.

  • This is such bull, a menstrual cup is not a solid barrier and will too leak when it is full. This guy must be sponsored by a big name brand of disposables feeling threatened that more and more woman are making the RIGHT choice for their HEALTH, BUDGET and ENVIRONMENT. Please do not let this video put you off cups, they are amazing and millions of women use them across the globe. Do your research.

  • This guy scared the hell out of me. I'm using a DivaCup and it's so amaizing that it would be a shame that what he is saying was true. So I decide that I needed to find out the true and what the FDA answer to his letter was that he didn't gave them enough prove. The FDA seek for cases where woman with endometriosis used a menstrual cup and there was just one case and is the one he is using. I don't know but I will continue using it,. I need more proves too for stop using an awesome product.

  • Bollocks, bollocks, bollocks, bollocks!

  • What the hell is this guy on about, what he claims is not possible.

  • This guy just said that a tampon being an absorbent product will leak when full and that is why it is less likely to cause endometriosis. Cups leak to when they are too full and a woman would not have backflow into the cervix. The cervix sphincter is much too small to allow so much blood back in to the uterus much less into the fallopian tubes that is would cause harm. If only medicine wasnt dominated by men.

  • he's a MAN!! what the HELL does he know??

  • Besides all of the anatomical nonsense that this man has spouted (Gut?!), I'd like to point out that the Lunette Cup is still seeking FDA aproval, that just screams to me that the FDA most certainly has examined all of these products individually!

  • Sought, and received. The Lunette was approved a couple days ago!

  • That's awesome!

  • By the end of it , this doctor ended up educating us on senility instead of endometriosis!!!

  • Comment removed

  • The entire argument displays an ignorance of female anatomy on par with thinking a tampon can get lost in your uterus.

If menstrual cups can cause endometriosis, then why don't all women get endometriosis every time they lay down at night? Wouldn't 8 or 9 hours of "back-up" flow back through the cervix?

And why hasn't a single case of endometriosis caused by cups EVER been reported in their 80-year existence?

Retrograde menstruation is only a theory, and a poor one with no evidence at that.

  • I absolutely second this! Great answer!

  • Hello there madam, MistressNomad/Cassie here. :) Thank you.

  • @GonzoNomad You are brilliant, i must say

  • Going by the diagram, menstrual cups are put near the entrance of the vagina? How then can it "block the flow of menstrual blood" as claimed unless blood fills up the entire vagina canal!?

I place mine directly around the cervix and it leaks when it is filled. The cervix is not a gaping opening that allows fluid to travel to/from the uterus & vagina!

Also, backflow into the GUT? Whhhat??? The anatomical education I received was different, and I can't trust an opinion like this.

  • i don't need to repeat what's already been said. When my cup is full it LEAKS! It doesn't go back up into my uterus...and gut??! Proof that some educated people aren't very educated.

  • This guy is a moron he knows nothing about cups accept shit that he read about them and now he is making stupid assumptions. Cups catch blood and don't push it back inside your uterus. I use a ladycup and it leaks when full.

  • Menstrual cups certainly do leak when they are full. I once wore my lunette cup to fullness to see how long it would take; and not only does the fullness create leaking but the air holes at the rim of all cups mean that you're going to have some leaking when the fluid level reaches the air holes. I currently wear a small lady cup and properly remove (once every 10 hours) and care for it. If my flow was heavier I would remove it more often -- I'm not stupid.

  • I wear a menstrual cup and I can tell you that when it gets too full IT LEAKS. However it takes a long time for it to get that full, or a lot of heavy bleeding. Furthermore most menstrual cup (with Instead being the only exception I'm aware of), are carried so low that I can't see how they would cause back flow.

I'm sure if the good doctor could use one he'd know that for himself, unfortunately I don't see that happening anytime soon.

  • I think he's a shill for the tampon/menstrual pad industry.

  • Comment removed

  • He really has no idea how they work does he...

  • isnt it amazing how uneducated some "professionals" can be?

  • I think you're full of it!

  • Man this is really fucked up! How big of a chance that menstrual flow will go backwards? If my cup is full it leaks, there isn't no back up. There is a slight suction, so should it not suck out the blood, not push it back in?

  • I agree. I don't use a cup myself (I'm thinking about it though)... but from what I've read they always say that it will leak if it is full.

Maybe women should also refrain from sleeping on their backs during menstruation?

  • lol apparently!
