  • Diesels only win because horsepower is restricted but torque isn't. Diesel engines are heavier and sound pretty terrible compared to a petrol V8 or V12. But pretty much any engine that only revs upto 6 or 7 thousand sounds aweful.

  • Diesel are better, and efficiency is the future.

    However, gas engine has better sound only because they have free exhaust system.

    Put a katalyser and a DPF on a gas engine, it sounds like these diesel.

  • the 12 hours of sebring is such a fun event.  i have been going for many years and audi just keeps getting better and better

  • I got the Audi R15 TDI in my Forza Motorsport 3 game and it's a blast to drive! I hope the R15 wins Le Mans this year, GO AUDI!

  • r15 is definitely better than r10...engine has got same power but lighter.... more down force ...even the sound is better...the reason why audi sucked at lemans is they have done so many races less than the previous year and peugeot had done a brilliant work

  • Are you joking? The V12 didn't have much sound to it.

    You could hear the turbochargers surging and the transmission singing but that was about it.

    This has a singing V10, it's almost like a late ninties/early two-thousands F1 car going diesel.

  • No I'm not joking. I must agree with your R10 sound definition, that's true. To be honest I was overjoyed when I first saw and heard the R10 in action. A torque of more than 1100 Nm and quiet like a street Audi. The R15 sounds more like a soviet tank than like a modern racing car. And it looks the same!

  • True. The R10 TDI LMP1 is very quiet, which is probably mainly due to the perfect balance and firing order of a V12 engine.

    I'm more of a noise guy though, I like loud engines. But I'm also very tech-savvy and thus I like the efficiency of a diesel engine.

    This is the perfect combination for me! I just like the looks of the R10 TDI LMP1 better though.

    Btw, most Soviet tank engines were V12 diesels like the R10 TDI LMP1, mostly two-stroke like Detroit Diesels.

  • I totally agree with you again. The R10's firing order is awesome. Must be Common Rail Direct Injection, otherwise I couldn't understand how this high power is produced in combination with this quietness. Right Soviet tanks are driven by V12 diesels. The R15's sound reminds me of that good old BMPs, those troop transporters.

    I like both, the R10 and the R15, in the visual as in the acoustic way!

    Do you know the Group C Porsche 956?

  • The BMPs were aircooled 4-stroke V6 diesels.

    Indeed the R10 has common rail direct injection with twin-turbocharger setup, I believe the fuel pressure is about 250 mPa or 36k psi, which is ... crazy.

  • Diesels might sound boring but truth is that the R15 is 2% faster than the other gasoline cars in LMP1.

  • i think peugeot totally lost its chance for glory with last season they were competing with audi who were using a car they had run for a few years which didnt handle as well as the peugeots but with the r15 i think they have lost all the advantages they had last year and are on level ground now, audi runs more smoothly all round in pitstops etc

  • The Peugeot is still faster, but their pit strategies just killed them in the 12 hours of sebring. We'll see what happens in the 24 hours of Le mans.

  • i agree peugeot just arent as efficient in the pits as audi same thing happened last year at Le Mans.
