hot diggity damn this works! my mouse was seriously gunged up, i tried the paper thing (rolling mouse upside down) i tried wedging folded up pieces of paper in between the ball and the case, nothing. Then i dipped my finger in some serious 50% goan cashew nut spirit (strongest , clearest booze in the cupboard) and dropped the drip onto the ball, turned it around and then rolled it with tissue to dry. i repeated this maybe 5 times and now i am back in scrolly ball heaven! hooray!

Used alcohol and a dustless wipe before but it didn't work very well. Could feel a lump. Problem recurred. Saw video on using a clean sheet of office paper. Rubbing the mouse up side down. That helped quite a bit. At first this broke the mouse completely. Once it dried I got function back. Not bad.

BTW the apple website recommends this without the water or alcohol just a clean dust free cloth but that doesn't really work. Clean paper is better if you fear water.

This is worth doing.

I used bike degreaser. Sprayed a tiny drop on the ball then rubbed it a bit.

This is a good concept, however I took a paper towel and soaked half of it with a quick splash of water then proceeded to rub the track ball with water on all sides, in all range of motion and it cleaned it up. Thanks for the original idea.

Water won't fix it, it may do temporarily.

Once it dries the grease will still be there because it is not water soluble. You need to use alcohol or acetone on a cuetip rolling the ball in every direction to melt way the film.

I certainly wouldn't poor water in to a working electrical device as it may never work again.

You guys should consider using alcohol swabs on the ball, then rub/roll the ball with pressure on your shirt or body. This works better than just water and paper. The paper has fibers and that only gets caught under the ball and create problems later on.

I had same problem with mine, sprayed on some kitchen cleaner into the ball via a bit of kitchen roll so it was quite wet, rolled it around a fair bit and hey presto, it's working again. I'd recommend doing this before pulling the mouse apart. Cheers.
