Hi I am a noob pole vaulter, my PR is 11.5 ft. I used to jump on a pole that was 13 ft and rated for 150lb, i weigh 163lb (I know this isnt allowed) so I have recently purchased a new pole, this is a 14 ft and rated for 170lb. I am having lots of trouble with it. I cant bend the new pole at all. Im not holding it at the very top yet because im too scared it will stand me up, In fact i have tried and it has. I dont know what im doing wrong and i dont have a coach to tell me. Please HELP!
@slashfan7777 Hey, sorry it took so long to reply. I didn't see your msg until now. That is a big difference in poles! 13ft 150lbs is like a 14ft 140lbs if I were to compare 13 and 14ft poles. I wouldn't be trying to 'bend' the pole because probably that means that you are blocking with your left arm (assuming you're a right handed vaulter).
To be able to jump on that pole you will have to have a good approach run with a constant acceleration and a very good takeoff with a tall right hand at the takeoff and a takeoff that is not under.
hey.. if you're focusing on pole vault bar drills.... don't pop out when you go upside down. Because you DO NOT WANT TO USE MOMENTUM TO SWING as SHOWN HERE- use only core, leg drive and back. Using momentum does not ingrain these skills into your jump it only makes you inconsistent and more dangerous.
Yes, thanks, this is an old video, but I still need to work on that more as I use a little momentum to swing, rather then staying behind the pole. You can check out more of my videos at "wurster2008"
I started pole vaulting for my school yesterday. Today was my second day and i tried the pit. I got up to 5ft 5 inches. I was pretty happy. Anyone know how i can raise it? Im aimin for 7ft 6.
@XmercyX831 This is for when you go upside down. You shouldn't worry about it when you're first starting out. Work on this gradually and when you have more experience, you will learn to use this.
You may be doing some of these: using a pole too heavy the soft side of the pole is positioned incorrectly upper arm not fully extended up at takeoff lack off runway speed takeoff point too close/far from box shoulders not square at takeoff lack of knee drive at takeoff left arm too passive at takeoff hips too low at takeoff failure to push up with lower hand at takeoff head wind fatigue injury insufficient left-leg swing
thanks, its off season now, but i was running to slow, i would stutter step, some times resulting in a "early plant" , and getting flung backwards...good times
Pole vaulting isn't completely reliant on strength, but general strength does help. If you are just starting, depending on how young you are I don't know if I would lift too much. If you do lift a lot, make sure that you stay flexible. If you watch Steve Hooker jumping he is very flexible through his shoulders and upper back. This helps a lot with vaulting. Good luck with vaulting.
omg am i going to make it in vaulting because im working on my upper body strength because i have very little and this is going to be my first time vaulting in march...
heh, my previous coach had us do that. Except we started from the ground in a crouched/layingDown position to practic driving the knees and enforce the arms. Quite fun, probably mroe fun on that though

try running your full speed. swing up as much as you can, and make sure your plant is straight.
