@ILickGlue Meh! You didn't get the joke... there are two dislikers, and I joked by saying that those two were Joe and Christian! Was meant to be funny, not literal facts. Sorry if I offended you.
Found this by googling colors of trombones haha but I'm glad it came up. This is great, I really love his part at 1:00 I think it's A Ab Gb E Eb in some sort of combination? Anyways thanks!
I've met Joe Alessi several times, and heard him play live then and other times. Both he and Jörgen are incredible players, and you can't determine a "better," even were there a point to doing that. I like that Jörgen takes more chances with both tone and technique for a musical reason. Even if sometimes it isn't as polished as it could be, some of his phrases that have a slightly chipped note do more for me than some of Alessi's perfection.
@joshfieldstbone Both are incredible, world-class players, and I couldn't even pick a personal favorite, let alone determine who is "better." Every player on every instrument on this planet has some things they do exceptionally well, and others that they need to work extra on just to prepare for a performance. No one (that I know) is equally good at every facet of their instrument.
@nhaguyanh It's Slide Factory 2005, better known as the first version of the European Trombone Festival organised by the New Trombone Collective. The actual place is the Laurens Church in Rotterdam
@CrazyRobotsRock7 Alessi plays it savage but what the fcuk are you on? This guy is awesome! You're clearly just one of these Alessi lovers. This isn't mastered either Alessi's recording is.
@padmeister23 Alessi has a lot of fucking fans because he is one of best musicians in the world right now. So don't tell me this shit about this guy being better. And Alessi being savage? I can't tell if you're complimenting him or insulting. Dumbass..
@CrazyRobotsRock7 Van Rijen and Alessi are both worldclass. Please, don't make a fool of yourself trying to favor one over the other. Van Rijen is a living legend on the trombone, just like Alessi.
@LucSch1988 Ok that may be true but, for trombone players, who's one of the musicians that is an idol for trombone? Ok I accept that I went a bit overboard but Alessi is seen as probably one or the best trombone player that has ever lived. No offense to this guy or Christian Lindberg. Alessi just plays the instrument in the most perfected tone and musically brilliant way, that I think cannot be prepared.
There are two versions on iTunes. Joe Alessi "Joesph Alessi - Visions" is the album. Then there is a recording with AWESOME tone by "Dirk de Caluwe & Symphonic Wind Orchestra Conservatory Antwerp", although you have to buy the whole album for it. I suggest splurging for the album all things considered.
There are also bootleg mp3s from "Joe Alessi - Sample CD for RCB Concert". I doubt there is an official CD for that particular recording though.
My band have played this piece before. This is definitely challenging for both the band and the soloist. Obviously both the band and the soloist Jorgens are fantastic in the performance. Thanks for uploading this clip!
jorgen is the top.......great musician, great person e great teacher! .....so much music in this concert..........(the wind orchestra isn't properly the same..)
Jörgens high range is amazing but also his low range is extremely good. It's just the recording that sucks. Jörgen is principal trombone in The Royal Concertgebouw Orchstra in Amsterdam, so I think you should first listen to other recordings of him and afterwards give you opinion.
You are exactly right. Every video of him on YouTube proves otherwise. This means that LazyTuba should not judge, since he must play tuba, not Trombone. Contrary to popular belief, a tuba is not the same thing as Trombone.
well mate, it depends entirely on the genre of music you want to play. the 6-1/2 is a small piece which is better suited for jazz. I'd reccommend a 5G, for experimenting on, to begin with. I ust a monnette 4TTL, and that's brilliant for all genres, but it's one of the hardest pieces to get used to, and I wouldn't tackle it until you're at a tertiary level. Hope this wsa helpful.
Woah, you are so incredibly wrong there! Nearly every trombone player, in a professional orchestra plays on a Greg Black mouthpiece, and no one plays on anything smaller than the 4G, most play the 3G-5G. Alessi plays on an even bigger one. 6 1/2 bach is kiddy stuff, you'll only play something that small , professionally, on an alto trombone, or in jazz, on a little pea-shooter small bore trombone. Get your facts straight, and don't assume that because you're less than average everyone else is.
Maybe in the US you do. As far as Europe is concerned, you're so incredibly wrong! There is a world outside the US, you know? And trust me, I know plenty who use 6 1/2 AL-L. And I know that what they do is no kiddy stuff. In fact, they will blow you away.
Sheesh, you're not the smartest of people eh? I'm not a bloody american. I am fully aware of what is out there, in europe, and I know that the majority of players in asia, the pacific, america AND europe, play on mouthpieces bigger than a child's mouth piece. That is if they wish to play in a professional orchestran and if they want to have a range of 5+ octaves.

Plus, 5G is smaller than 4G, so get YOUR facts right. 6½ isn't that small and is definately not an alto mouthpiece. However it's true that most people play on sizes 3, 4 or 5.
sorry mate, you're jumping into an argument, I'm having just for fun, I'm not being serious. But my facts are straight. I play a 3g-5g that means it is a 3g rim, with a 5g cup, s it is a hell of a lot bigger than a 4g, which I played and hated, cause I have big lips.
I know that pieces don't determine your range, I was just insulting spdres, because he's trying to come across as a professional or something, I was directing my comment at him, not at his mouthpiece. 6 and a half is the smallest I've played on, since I was 10 and in australia that's and london what we use for alto trombones.
I don't really agree with you "small...helps endurance..." statement on a personal level, because I find that (personally) my tone is shallow, and I find it very hard to trill, or do fast flex studies on smaller pieces. I like the room to move my lips. (without changing my embroucher of course.)
Everyone here could probably benefit from reminding themselves of the fact that there are a LOT more professional musicians in this world than just the ones they know of. Claiming that because all the people you know play on a certain mouthpiece, everyone in the world must also play on them, is a terrible argument.
I have played this piece myself so i know how hard it is to play it well...I have big respect for Van Rijen and his performance. I like his sound and his smooth technique and legato playing. Just compare this video with the Jacques Mauger version...a world of difference!
Trudel has done a concerto last week. He is playing very rarely. Trudel admit he can do both but it admit also that he will not be able to keep the rythm of doing both for a long time. But a diminished (event if is not diminished at all) Trudel on trombone worth the event i think!
You can order the solo trombone and piano edition for about 30€ from Kameleon editions (a division of Beriato who publish the full band version). Just google Kameleon Editions and you should find their website.
Out of the 4 versions I've seen/heard of this piece (van Rijen, Mauger, the original with Haemhouts, and Alessi), I think this is by far the best one.

well mate, it depends entirely on the genre of music you want to play. the 6-1/2 is a small piece which is better suited for jazz. I'd reccommend a 5G, for experimenting on, to begin with. I ust a monnette 4TTL, and that's brilliant for all genres, but it's one of the hardest pieces to get used to, and I wouldn't tackle it until you're at a tertiary level. Hope this wsa helpful.

6 1/2 for jazz?? All the professional trombone-players in the classical genre use 6 1/2. And not the least ones..

That is probably the most stupid thing I've ever heard. You're posting crappy arguments, just to try and insult me? xD
And professional... you do not even know me, let alone my level of trombone-playing.
Spdres 2 years ago
Everyone here could probably benefit from reminding themselves of the fact that there are a LOT more professional musicians in this world than just the ones they know of. Claiming that because all the people you know play on a certain mouthpiece, everyone in the world must also play on them, is a terrible argument.
Broaden your minds, people =)

it just depends on your preferance, alessi uses a 2 1/2 G mouthpiece which is more than any tenor trombone player can handle but him.

otheres use 6 1/2 AL...just depends on what works for you
personally i dont really see much difference between how they sound >_> it all depends on the player
