I have to agree with 'theuntold90'. Don't get me wrong, Southern Pacific #4449 always looks good. However, if I were to put her paint schemes in order from best to not quite the best (NOT BAD), the order would be: 1) Warbaby paint scheme (black and silver), 2) American Freedom Train paint scheme (red, white, & blue), and 3) her normal paint scheme (red and orange).
what the bloody hell do your engines burn out there.....some of the engines looked like they were burning rubber the state of the black smoke coming out the chimney.here in England (u.k.)we use coal
Why did the Southern Pacific 4449 ,(@ time marker 2:29),have a diesel/elctric behind the steam engine? (Which sounded as it was pulling/pushing as well, when it passed the camera at time 2:58?
if you watch close several of the engines had diesels behind them. as for the SP, I would be willing to bet this video was taken a few years back when Union Pacific brought out the old SP passenger train for a publicity/aniversary tour. they sent the old steam engines and their respective cars out, but because of the increased maintainence required on the old steams, they opted to use the steam for photo ops only. the diesels did the heavy lifting on the tours.
The diesel-electrics are included in the consist to provide dynamic braking on down-grades. The sound you hear are the blowers for the traction motors and dynamic-braking resistor grids.
It was on a excursion train an when a train becomes to long or it is going up a very steap grade it needs a helper. Also, it might be providing HEP. -Brandon

This is just my opinion, though.

how come they have to use a diesal helper
unionpacifictrain 3 years ago
They use diesel helpers incase the steam trains have problems like going up steep hills or so.

Only a modest loco, the class 36 was and still is a very respected steamer in New South Wales, Australia. See-

We burn oil. Not one engine in North America (that I have heard of) burns rubber.

It is using the the diesel for HEP (Head End Power) and to help it over the mountain.(In this case, the scenic subdivson and the cascade mountains)
