I didn't know that, however I must agree, it is a great elevator, though it is quite costly to make. However it is very worth it.

can u put a tutorial and can it be used on rails and sand?gravel or would you have to figure out a whole new way to do it

I'm not sure, there are already tutorials on how to make this certain type of elevator, a video where I got the idea is in the description.

Aside from that, I have no clue, you could most likely use anything to build it, however with all the pistons, chances are that rails wouldn't work near this contraption.
