I don't know why but for some reason the 707 just seemed more athestically pleasing to me. The DC8 has clean, graceful lines but the twin air intakes in the front with the multi-paneled cockpick just throws it off. I means seriously am I mistaken when I say it looks like that plane is wearing a JASON Mask???
I flew LAX-HNL on a Pacific East DC-8-61 back in '83 for under $100 as I recall. A short lived airline started by ex-Western execs that operated out of the West Imperial terminal. The thing I remember most is we were way too high on short final to the reef runway, thought we were going around, when all of the sudden the reverse's were deployed on the inboard engines and we dropped right in, like slipping a Cessna. I think the DC-8 is the only transport certified for in-flight reverse thrust.

Agreed. I'll tell you what, we should put our heads together to see if we can get some folks together to support the restoration of N8066U (UAL) which was donated to the city in 1984 for the Olympics. She's on a pedestal now, but she's also in a state of slow decay. It'd be great to see the interior restored for admission, similar to SAM 27000 at the Reagan Library.
The '8s, The Al Wells and Finazo Era, It was because of these guys Hawaiian flew the DC8's These planes flew all over the world. Hawaiian had some of the youngest Captains flying these planes at that time. They were good sticks. No female pilots ever check out as captain on the DC8 at Hawaiian. Only One female First Officer check ever check out as a Copilot. The Check out was hard. They were lots Female flight engineers. When you check out as Captain on the DC8 you had the right stuff.
@Flying3803, this particular aircraft (N8969U)/(cn 46070/467) went on to fly for Arrow Air and is now stored at Roswell Industrial Air Center (ROW / KROW) but could be broken up by now. The DC-8-62 is a plane that loves fuel a bit too much and it also only held around 189 passengers. When you compare the fuel consumption per seat of the L-1011's and even the newer A330's it makes sense to upgrade the fleet.
I 2nd Coaljets post. Many forget that the interior is also part of an airlines identity. I'm sure these vtg eight interiors by today's standards, pale in comparison to the high tech first class cocoons of today. Personally, I really dislike the premium interiors that are faced away from the windows in that horrible herringbone design.
What a beautiful Eight, and in a fantastic paint job too. Nice to see the reverse-thrust view from the front - not too many videos around of Eights reversing in that angle. I'm STILL really holding out hope that one of these days, you will get your hands on some footage filmed from inside one of these birds!! They were still flying in the mid-90s I think, and by that time the general public certainly had easy access to camcorders. Fingers crossed!!
@QuickBurn70, I'm sorry I slightly botched my last response. The -61/71 and the 63/73 are the stretched models (187.5ft). The -62/72 are the hot rods of the group, the -62 has the same thrust as a -61 (18,000lb) and the -72 is CRAZY powerful at 22,000lbs of thrust.
I flew on a Hawaiian Airlines DC-8 from SLC direct to HNL in 1986. Nice flight.

Does anyone know what happened to this type of aircraft of why it's not in the Hawaiian Airlines fleet anymore.
