I used to have 2 9800GX2s and I ditched them in favour of one GTX 285. The GX2s and Quad SLI scaled like shit. Quad SLI is horrible in my opinion, I haven't used the 295s but I think those might be the same way. Single core GPUs are the way to go. SLI, Tri SLI, or otherwise.

100% agree the 295 is as bad as the gx2 in quad sli, single gpus in sli scale better and run extremly smooth. I wont buy dual gpu cards anymore.

The quad 295 has known problems, especially with vram and frame buffer. Tri Sli 285 is the way to go. But Im still not really happy with what I'm getting for that much money. Three cards to get 38 fps minimum on a game? It seems to me with three high end cards I should be getting at least 80 fps min. I can remember when one video card easily ran the popular games maxed out with no sweat. I'm beginning to think the game companies and the video card manufacturers are conspiring together.

did you se maxishine's test? even gtx 280 tri sli beats quad-sli gtx 295 in most of the games, gtx 285 x3 even maintain at 91 fps in cod5 all the time, while 2x gtx 295 drops from 91 to 60. and now you're talking about gtx 285, damn sure it it's way faster than gtx 295

Sure is 295 only wins in vantage but vantage isnt a game.

vantage scales nearly double for every gpu but its the only video benchmark that does, any game tri sli scales loads better and you dont have the frame skipping that quad has to ruin your gaming experience.

I'm going to assume you have the 896MB versions of the GTX 275, if you do then it'll be close, however your benches will be lower because the GTX 285's have a higher amount of frame buffer, more ROP's, and a larger bus width for memory throughput.

Let's say you have a 2.4 ghz quad core, very powerful, but would bottleneck any modern card nowadays because of it's somewhat-low speed.

Overclocking can fix RAM, GPU, and CPU bottlnecks, but HDDs are stuck at their interfaces and RPMs.

I buy what makes sense, without sparing quality..

for example it wouldn't make sense to buy a 10 Tb Server drive, just for bragging rights, because I would never fill it up. 4 Tb is enough. probably more than I need, but I can rest easy knowing I have enough, but I don't go crazy

Definatly not rich about a year and a half ago i had a p4 1.8ghz 256 mb ram and a 20gig hdd with onboard intel graphics, but gradually upgraded to this point one component at a time then once i got in a position with all the latest stuff as something new comes i usually sell the part thats gonna be replaced a week or so before the release of the new part to get a better price then i add alittle money to the pot and buy the new stuff. The key is to sell before you lose to much money on old tech

Thats not a bad jump in FPS from 2way to 3way. What was it, 16 FPS more? So you can pretty much play whatever game maxed out! I just built my 920 i7 with a 260/216 . Playing far cry 2 and love it. Well it doesn't take much to impress me because the last first person game I played was quake 3 !
