Yes Rocky trained him but they never had a formal contract and then Tommy sold himself to that rich guy and everyone booed him out and they told him he will never be like Rocky and he wanted to fight him.

This is at the end of the movie, Tommy lets fame and fortune get to his head, much like Rocky in the third film, and Tommy dumps Rocky as a trainer, and once Tommy becomes champ, people begin saying Tommy is nowhere near Balboa, and would lose to him in a fight, so Tommy comes to challenge Balboa, Paulie calls Tommy nothing, Tommy hits Paulie, and this is the result

i see rocky did nothing. he became a champion but when he retired he stoped being a legend and his statue was removed. his wife died. his kid doesnt love him too much and he became rich to lose everything at the end and never take them back. now he has lost his trainer, his best friend, his wife, his money, his championship and his statue :P
