It's interesting how most of these great musicians are at their absolute peaks when playing with Zorn, or more precisely Zorn's repertoire. I got to see Marc Ribot live a few months ago and although it was a good concert and he's a very skilled guitar player, it didn't have the impact on me as he does by playing Zorn's stuff. I mean, not even close.
Zorn is an absolute genious and Electric Masada is without a doubt one of his most astonishing ensembles.
These guys are just soooo fucking good... I can't even comprehend how musicians can be that good and a composer such as zorn can be that creative. Just wow.
The account of the siege of Masada was related to Josephus by two women who survived the suicide by hiding inside a cistern along with five children, and repeated Eleazar ben Ya'ir's exhortations to his followers, prior to the mass suicide, verbatim to the Romans. Because Judaism strongly discourages suicide, Josephus reported that the defenders had drawn lots and killed each other in turn, down to the last man, who would be the only one to actually take his own life.
i think there is much more to an inspired musical composition than cord complexity, which is not always necessary or desirable (think of Ravel's BOLERO). I find Zorn's music very unique sounding even if the soloparts are somehow predictable.
yes, you could be right. but his tone is quite low and it looks like he's got baritone strings on that guitar, even if it's a standard electric. a definately baritone electric guitar sound. maybe somebody else will know for sure.
His strings look no thicker than any normal medium gauge guitar string. I quick test on my guitar demonstrated that everything he plays is naturally within the range of a normally strung guitar.
yes it may be so, i thought the strings look much thicker than normal but i can't tell for certain, with such low image analysis but how about the positions of scales and cords ? are they were they should be ?i've recently heard that he downtunes his guitar to get this tone.
Yes, well, a point of clarification then. Downtuning a halfstep is a very common way to adjust the tone and the 'feel' of the strings a you play them. That is not the same as a Baritone guitar tuning. Baritone guitars are tuned a fourth lower (or even sometimes a fifth lower) than the standard tuning (a fourth is five half steps). Since it's that much lower, playing Baritone pretty much requires a longer scale guitar.
Everything he plays (even all the stuff in the low frets of the low e string) can be played in standard tuning. He may be downtuned a half step, but I'm not sure I would say that isn't a 'standard' tuning, given how common it is. Either way, it is without a doubt not a baritone guitar.
@theo9952 Almost sure that he's in standard tuning here: by watching Jamie Saft's solo, you can tell they're in F, and there's a moment in Ribot's solo during which he plays a low root note (i.e. F) and you can see that he's fingering his lowest string at the first fret. Something to do with his hands, maybe, cos I agree: he makes a guitar sound huuuuge
You wish it was that easy ;) After finding them you will have to dig through hundreds of Zorn's albums to find your first one (after Zornfest in Warsaw yesterday I'm exactly on this stage). Or just pick the random one and start connecting with Zorn's genius right now ;)
I think the Ribot´s guitar is an Ibanez, it looks like an AX120, like the Omar Rodríguez-López model. Somebody can help me? Someone say is a "fender something III".
does someone knows what is the Ribot's guitar ? is it a "fender something III" ? I don't remember the name. Here he sounds really good, love this guy, especially with zorn :)
ribot's playing is incredible. He is good at slowly building until it insanely climaxes. Probably one of the most emotional/intuitive guitar players I've seen
I'd have to say that without a doubt in my mind, that ribot is the most TASTEFUL guitarist I've ever heard, and probably instrumentalist, Electric Masada's recordings all exhibit this fact.

anyone know what scale the guitarist using to improvise on?
lobzunpreston 2 years ago
This, along with most of the Masada songbooks, is built around the fifth mode of harmonic minor, probably the most commonly used 'Hebrew' type scale.

If this band played every night, I would go see them each and every damn night and never get tired of it.
Pleepleus 2 years ago 3
well, could be suggestive as background music for some movie ,maby a scene on bordello with a bit of the usual violence would fit.
Otherwise it´s a onechord song wiyt quite guessable soloparts. and that often is not enough for me.
But rather this than 87% of the comercial rubbish.
It has feel to it.
But

actually it's a gibson melody maker, I don't know why I mixed the two up.. there's no baritone melody maker , there's a shorter scale version though.

@theo9952, I saw him some days ago with his free jazz trio, and he used 012s on his gibson semiacoustic, that shure is a part of his big sound...
hope I helped you
