Hey guys, I will see Lance tonight. I will show him this youtube clib and the remarks below...he will enjoy reading them....@roncarl @brent5150 thank you, I'll show him your kind words!!
Great video of the wonderful past days of Memphis wrestling. Happy I grew up in Memphis during this era....BTW, that is my Father-in-Law, Lance, doing the commentating of the match...to this day, he stills loves the old Memphis wrestling days & talks to many of the fans of this era...
@debrussellremax saturdays at noon just weren't right w/o lance russell and dave brown right along ringside when i was a kid. i'm in louisville and it was always cool when they were there at louisville gardens doing something for tv. i used to love to hear his voice during the live matches at msc that they'd show on weekly show.
Jackie is 83 years young now. He did the strut in the ring tonight at "A Night to Remember, Chapter 2 at the NWA Arena in East Nashville. George Gulas is now promoting Old Scholl Wrestling in Nashville.
Jackie got a standing ovation and hasn't missed a step with the "strut," LMAO!!
they are actually working a boxing match. with some wrestling. and its interesting. not easy. i've been to boxing exhibitions. they are horrible! yet this is good.
These guys were great wrestlers! They could sell there kayfabe better than these guys today! Also these guys were tough and could you imagine their salesmanship with the technology we have today!
What a shame that Memphis wrestling died out. It is sad that some people's egos will not allow them to step aside and allow new blood to take over. Lawler should have been grooming his replacement years ago and moved out from in front of the camera into the background. Because of his ego one of the greatest wrestling territories in history is no more.
I worked with both Lawler & Fargo during this period in Tennessee and Kentucky for infamous promoter Nick "The Miserable Skinflint." Gulas.Gulas fired me for a match I had with Fargo where I was too heelish abd then I kauhed in Nick's face when he was chewing my out.. I miss those good old days.LOL . Nick was one greasy-haired cheapskate.
Actually, I always got along very well with Lawler. I first wrestler Lawler and Fargo in 1973 on Memphis TV. Fargo double-crossed me and pinned me when I was supposed to pin him. I said "Fuck you Fargo" and the TV camera and sound was right on me...oops I got fired after that. I worked with Lawler again in 1985 in Hawaii and California. He was easy to work with and a good guy to me, so I really didn't see anything that would make a good Lawler story.
On the other hand, Fargo was Gay and hit on my partner more than once. Fargo & I had heat fromm the minute we met. He resented me getting so much heat from the fans from my 1st night in the territory. He felt that I was taking his heat away, and maybe I was. We never even spoke to each other. We'd both just give each other the stink-eye any time we were together. LOL
I wrestled as Crazy Charlie Reidin Nick Gulas' territory. He was a real skinflint and hated by nearly everyone who worked for him. Jack Brisco despised him. I later worked in Hawaii under a mask as Mr Z. After joining up with Dr Jerry Graham, I became his son Mad Dog Steele Graham in Africa, Haiti(whatta dump), Mexico and the west coast. I guyess that I used thast name in St Louis the last time I worked there too.
Reid, Mr Z & Graham were my identities. I lifted weights and actually became a bodybuioler in the 1980s. I would also run 5 miles every other day. Dr Jerry Graham and Vandal Drummond (Kurt Brown) and I would work out in the ring quite often. Harley Race & K.C, promoter Gust Karras got me started in the business, but I had no real training until I met The Von Braunner Bros, Jack Donovan and Jerry Graham. Jerry turned me into a shooter.
@BaronTurco thats awsome, thanks for the explanation and info. Any advice for any aspiring wrestlers out there? Where was your favorite place to work and what were your signature moves?
CONDITIONING is the #1 thing for anyone aspiring to become a wrestler. It doesn't matter how good you are if you run out of wind (blow up). That's the worst feeling in the world to me. If I were trying to break in now, I would go to someplace like the ROH training center & there are other good instructors as well. My favorite finisher was the flying neckbreaker. I really don't see it used much anymore, but it would definitely fit in with today's style.
I should also add that today's workers like Davey Richards, Austin Aries, Kevin Steen, Briajn Danielson and many more, especially the Dragon Gate roster, are among the best wrestlers of all time. It's great to see the business continually progressing with new and innovative moves. My favorites right now are Davey Richards & Austin Aries. My least favorite is Necro Butcher. He throws a terrible punch for someone who is supposed to be a brawler. Joey Ryan was horrible, but has gotten better.
My favoriter place to work was St Louis, without a doubt. The 1st time I worked there the dressing was like a who's who of wresrtling greats and I was awestruck. Brisco, O'Connor, Race, Schmidt, Bill Miller and many more were all there and I got to work with Brisco. I still feel that was the best match I ever had.
I was active from 1973 through 1986. A knee injury forced me to hang it up. I never did work with Race, but he was the one who got me in the door and got me started. I worked an angle with Race in St Louis when he interfered in my match with Brisco and then I beat Jack down from behind. I was headed to Detroit to work for The Sheik in the early 80s, but I decided against it because the money was so poor at that time. He went out of business around this time. VKM ruined the business.
I spent many hours ahooting in the gym, mainly against boxers. Dr Jerry Graham taught me how to shoot. He was awesome. My final match in Los Angeles vs Power Team USA turned into a shoot within seconds. I broke one of their ankles, was suspemnded by the CA State Athletic Comm for a year, and ended up retiring, since I had knee problems anyway. Mando Guerrero shot on me in 1982 and we had a slugfest that even carried over back to the dressing room. We hated each other for years. We're OK now tho
Speaking of the Guerreros, how were the other brothers backstage and did Eddie hang around his brothers back then? Did you have any idea he go on to be as great as he was?
I really don't remember Eddie being around back then. Chavo was a real asshole, however. I guess that Hector was probably the nicest of the bunch. Their dad,Gory Guerrero, was the promoter in Santa Ana, CA back then and he never said a word to anyone that I can recall.
Eddie was really critical of Chavo in his book because Chavo would never praise him or was too critical of his work even when he was on top in the WWE. Chavo left the WWE on bad terms after throwing a fit and no showing back in 04 so that should def. backup what you said.
my niece just posted this video on and it brings back alot of memories, Jackie was my step father and we went to those matches alot back in the 70's. my best memory was when jerry jarrett and Jeff used to come over to the house and Tojo even cooked for us once..i was scared of him he's one big guy i was in my teens.
Okay, so Billy Garrett and my little dad are at a liquor store with a group of hippies with hair almost to their butts standing outside. Billy tells my dad "That pisses me off." He gets out of the car and walks over and pushes a couple of the hippies aside, goes in and buys a bottle. When he comes out, he stops and tells the hips, "Next time I come here, you sons of bitches better have a haircut." My dad said the only response was from one hippie who replied "Yes sir." Hilarious, right?
Believe it or not, I'm also married to the daughter of another legend of southern wrestling. Though he will go nameless, as we don't get along. But my favorite story of Billy Garrett goes like this: He and my dad went to a liquor store on Dickerson Rd. in Nashville one day at the height of the hippie movement in the late 60s, and my dad is small, he's 5'7" and 140 lbs. soaking wet, and when they get to the liquor store, there's a group of hippies standing outside the door, continued nxt comnt
Continuing, Billy Garrett loved to brawl for real, and from all accounts was one of the baddest dudes ever to put on the trunks. He and friends, like Billy Singleton, Dick Murdoch, Dick Dunn, rip, and others loved to tear up bars and heads. Any combo of them would reportedly take on whole crowds, 30 to 40 strong, and not leave anyone standing. Billy used to tell me that Jerry Lawler was one of the toughest and hardest hitting men he ever met, and his skills were legit as a fighter.
My uncle, Billy Garrett, was one of Jerry's first influences and trainers. Billy was one of the original Interns, Masked Medics, and Scufflin' Hillbillies in the 50's and 60's. He had to give it up after being shot 3 times in a Nashville bar in the late 60's. His partner, Dick Dunn, was killed in the same incident. Billy carried him over a mile to Nash. General Hospital before collapsing in the emergency room. I'll post another comment to finish the story.
Thanks the awesome response. Sorry, I don't recognize the guys who say they are nephews, maybe Lawler's. If they are my cousins, speak up ;-), either way it is a compliment and tribute to him. He is up in years but still full of himself. He was inducted into the NWA Legend Hall of Fame last weekend, it's awesome that he is still loved and respected. You can see me as a young and timid teenager in the WHBQ Christmas video. THANKS for sharing your wonderful comments and memories. "Jackie Mae"
