Both my grand and great grand parents lived through the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Although they called it The Fire. They said that the earthquake itself was not that bad, but the fire was unbelievable. It could not be stopped. They slept in Golden Gate Park where ALOT of babies were conceived. They said it was the greatest experience of their lives. They felt special having lived through it. But said that The City was never the same afterwards. The Old City was even more beautiful.
Incredible Disaster struck that morning --- everybody needed help to recover. Today the United States could be struck with similar disaster as San Francisco is the fault line.
@luap123311 I would look at Juan de Fuca plate. That will probally be the next. That plate will effect the Pacific Northwest badly and can set of the San Andreas again.
Sadly look 100 years later at Haiti. Looking at these photo's, this may one day soon be Seattle, Vancouver BC or San Fran again! Everyone thinks we are earthquake ready today, not even close folks!
Isn't amazing how they were able to rebuild after that terrible earthquake. What I mean is...it wasn't impossible...it's just that they didn't have the technology like we have today. I wonder how long it took for them to rebuild everything???
Actually, they rebuilt it a little too quickly. The Pan American Exposition was scheduled to open there in 1915 and the City Council ignored most building codes just to get the city rebuilt before then. Many of the structures built at that time are still in use today, but would never be approved by today's codes.
I agree with you....these people had to virtually clean up and rebuild the city by their own hands....Like you said they certainly didn't have the tech we have today.
No smoke inhilation there people just burned alive, gad that is just horrible to even think of.

Love the image at the beginning with the road ripped in half. The power of Mother Nature is fascinating and yet terrifying to witness.
Love the music too - very haunting. Have been searching for it for ages!

Many of the newer buildings, like the hotels were touted as being "Earthquake-proof"... unfortunately, they were not "Fire-proof."

@snowmountain2007 Three years with the help of the municipal bond market. The bond market is where they got the cash.
