Is it possible that I'm the only one who memorized every move of this by wearing out my VHS tape?? With all of the other versions I've found on You Tube, I haven't seen this one in years, but still know it by heart. With Phil's health issues, not to mention being 60 yrs old now, it's very sad that we may never see another live duet with the great Chester Thompson, but I truly hope I'm wrong. Thanks so much Sober8!
Love that drum solo.. loved it since I first saw the video in 84' Anything I could tap on.. I was banging out those triplet chops Phil was doing in the first 1/3rd of the solo.. classic!
The music wasn't better when Gabriel was in the band.. it was just............ different. What changed the music was technology and the progressive nature of the music related to the interests of the listeners. Not to mention that they were a 5 piece writing group then. 4 after Peter and 3 when Steve left. Wow, that sounded cool! Electronic drum boxes really changed the "Genesis" sound. You'll notice it really takes a "pop" direction with the release of Duke in 1979.
I think phil is a great drummer...and also a good singer...I love genesis' songs with gabriel...but i think Phil have a better voice than gabriel....they are two different artists---two great minds....and two great musician...
imho, Phil has "the soul" of a drummer. He sings really good technically, but his voice just hasn't that certain kind of magic and charisma that you can hear from his drumming. Peter Gabriel had way more charisma in his voice, eventhough he wasn't on a very high technical level. I love the first Genesis recordings the most, partially for Phil's stunning drumwork.
I disagree. I think Phil's had one of the most dynamic, passionate voices in rock. Something about his vocals reminds me of Maynard James Keenan from Tool. Just the passion I guess. (If Tool's too heavy for ya, check out A Perfect Circle's Mer De Noms). I like his versions of all the old Genesis tunes better than Peter's. This drum duet is ridiculous.
Sure, i love Tool. Yeah, it's all just a question of personal preference, but Collins just doesn't reach me on an emotional level at all. Though of course he is not a bad singer, no need to discuss that. :)
Ah, my first Genesis concert. I saw them four more times after this and will see them again in October. I can only hope for another Chester-Phil performance...and "In The Cage".
Yes there is a DVD, but you can only buy it along with loads of other Genesis stuff which costs something like £85. But it is also on a video called "The Mama tour". You should get it, it's an incredible gig.
You remind me of someone I knew back in high school. She and I liked Phil for verrrry different reasons! As for the drumming, this is one of my favorite duets of theirs (Phil and Chester, that is).
i just love drum solo's.have you ever heard or seen neil peart? from rush? hes the best and they all have their own different rhythems. i couldnt ask for more.
This did lead into Los Endos, only the video cut off Los Endos for some reason. My dad saw this tour and told me this when we were watching the video the other week.
... actually, this the opening to Los Endos. Seanboud is right. This duet was performed firts by Collins and Bruford around 1976 Genesis Tour. Great video, thanks.
this isn't that hard with one kick and trust me, i've seen chester live a few times... he has a pretty fast foot. i think it's more about justifying all those rack toms. imagine all those drums and just one bass drum... it would look pretty funny!
drum duet after that part turn it on again

Correct...I believe this tour was 1983, which means the video would have been out in '83 or '84.

The drum duet leads into Turn it on Again, on this 84 tour. On the 1987 tour it went into Los Endos.

Yep they're both world-class. No harm I guess in Phil getting a little soft in his old-age. Chester and Phil have been drumming giants for decades.
.
Make sure you get a chance to see Chester with Frank Zappa. A little different, but my god. He's always been solid.

Look closely at Phil's bassdrum, look at what pace his foot keeps on delivering that kick. Chester has to use two bassdrums just to keep up.

I beleive this drum duet is officially called "Los Endos". Great stuff, both are fantastic drummers.
seanboud 5 years ago
No this is not "Los Endos", that's a completly different song.
sober8 5 years ago
Yeah, I believe this is just called Drum Duet. The end of their solo leads into the song "Los Endos" from A Trick of the Tail.
