  • Transcendental Meditation is right up there with Scientology. A breeding ground for cults. Why aren't beards allowed on their campus when the Maharishi has one? They charge you $1500 to learn this "simple" technique. Why not donate it for free? They have enough multimillionaires hyping this stuff (McCartney, Simmons, etc), the should be able to fund it. Their website has no links to any "scholarships" they mention. A $ making placebo effect and nothing more. They wont even reveal their technique!

  • GORDON COLE!!!

  • No diamond or bar of gold is perfect but it is a fool who throws them in the trash due to impurities.

  • It sounds like a lovely project.

  • He was given the sound but can't repeat it out loud?

  • This defines Placebo effect.

  • anyone considering learning TM should first read `Transcendental Misconceptions` by R.D Scott, also have a look at TM EX a website for disillusioned and `enlightened` ex meditators. you might just save a few quid and retain some dignity!!!!!

  • If everyone should learn this then why is it so damn expensive??? It's not fair that something so simple costs $1500+... and what about people like me who live in remote areas far away from any certified TM teacher? So frustrating!

  • people don't make mistakes they're only learning

  • She seems like a nice woman.

  • I experienced my first transcendental mediation last night. I have been depressed for a while now and can honestly say, waking up this morning I've felt a profound change on my view of the world. Everything which he, or anyone, says about the experience of being in a transcendental meditative state is true. Everyone should do it. Its not hard, and its free. I'm not a salesman trying to sell you a drug, I'm a human trying to share an experience.

  • @Chrley where do you learn it for free?

  • @VirtualSamadhi i do agree for the most part and am not necessarily putting my stamp of approval on the ol' TM but there is overhead cost involved and also the organisation is a non profit........WHOA i almost hit post then checked THE MAHARISHI GROUP its worth many! billions and the maharishi worth almost one billion before death...though the company seems "good":solar energy, organic farms, supplements, but also REAL ESTATE, software, jewelery...still pretty "good" for a multinational conglom

  • HE'S WIGGLING THE HAND AGAIN LOOK OUT

  • what if everyone's mantra is exactly the same but because they are persuaded not to discuss them no one ever discovers this

  • Transcendental Meditation?

    NOW Eraserhead makes sense!

  • He sounds like a salesman.

    He is "pitching" a product.

  • @ExoticCalli relating a concept very much sounds like that

  • @ExoticCalli relating a concept very much sounds like that

  • wooooah, the hair, the hair....

  • TM is easy to do and it helps me relax & see life clearly, without being taken over by my ego. Life has become so much better & clearer since i started. Still, this is only my truth. Peace to all :-)

  • Transcendental finger flapping.

  • it is concerning that meditation education is becoming a brand... am i correct in understanding that Buddhist monks actually renounce worldly possessions in order to be freed from attachment and aversion? This point seems to have not been a part of Lynch's development...

  • @expandingvoid David isn't a Buddhist monk, though. In another interview he said that most people who get into meditation give up negative habits and addictions, such as smoking, but he didn't feel like he needed to because he enjoyed it.

  • I have done TM for 43 years - what has it done for me? who knows! certainly among other things I learnt it may have done me good, but more likely just like him I may still be as crazy as a coot. Just don't believe all the marketing - its a product. I wonder why he is doing all this...why... why ... whats the hook - we've seen the bait.

  • David Lynch is the man. Although Mulholland drive pissed me off.

  • The great contradiction of TM - the constant proclamation that it is "simple and effortless" but costs more than a thousand dollars to learn. This is where anyone with common sense screams, "Bullshit! Total. . . fucking. . . bullshit," to quote David Lynch (who was not speaking of TM at the time, but of product placement, just to clarify).

  • @neukolnxyz I don't know how much it costs. Hopefully your objection is to paying for it not actually meditating. Meditation works to put things in perspective.

  • She keeps referring to meditators as believers. Theres nothing to believe in. Its scientific. It just is. And its so simple. No religion, no dogma or doctrine. No price or dues or rules. You can find your mantra on line for free. they arent unique

  • David Lynch is a very intelligent man and it disgusts me to see how he is being treated by this awfully disrespectful and uninterested woman.

  • Anybody can do mantra meditation without having to pay thousands of dollars on Transcendental Meditation just so that they give you a specific mantra. The big question is: Why do the TM people charge thousands of dollars for those courses?

  • @joseg1787

You could waste all of that money and more chasing happiness and health and never obtaining it. or spend part of that to actually have it as long as you live.

  • @nubface113 true indeed. but the point is happiness right? and our attachment to money, and the process of earning it is a source of suffering, do you agree?

  • Maybe David will extract some of the Indian hocus pocus from TM and make it more accessible. It is valid in the proper context.

  • The reporter's comment that his movies are' dark.' Ugh. As he said, there is dark and light in life, so there is dark and light in his movies. Some of the most passionate portrayals of romantic love I have ever seen are in his films.

  • there is a tm in cork ireland and they charge €600 for the course, €300 forthe unemployed and €200 for a student.

  • @kerrywoman1

    >there is a tm in cork ireland and they charge €600 for the course, €300 forthe unemployed and €200 for a student. <

    ---

Sounds good to me, especially since TM improves health and happiness. What price can you put on that? When I learned TM 20 years ago I was well pleased with the improvements in my life within a matter of days i.e. better sleep, increased happiness, less tired etc. In fact many of my family learned soon after me when they seen the positive changes in me...

  • I just had my first true breakthrough with transcendental meditation. It is not a lie. And you do not need money, just guidance. And it's quite simple really. To save anyone who is interested the trouble, here are fundamental tips: If you here a ringing sound amidst total silence, focus just on that sound with your eyes closed. If you see a swirling light, focus on that as well. All I can say is that if you focus hard enough, you will feel a huge surge of energy starting at the top of the head

  • Meditate by all means! You can learn for free in many places and on many Youtube clips. Anyone who tries to charge you more than a nominal small fee is a charlatan and a rip-off merchant. The Dalai Lama can teach you for nothing.

  • @chestnius Meditate by all means! You can learn for free in many places....<

    ----

Forget it. You wont be learning properly. Take it from me. I tried loads of meditation techniques over twenty years ago. Waste of time. Thank goodness I found TM, it works straight away, plus and its backed by scientific studies - and by Paul Mccartney and Lynch etc. I became a TM teacher years ago and have taught a lot of people TM. It easy to learn, but it has to be learned one-to-one from a trained TM teacher

  • @RonSkem If it can't be learned without a teacher, how did the first teacher learn it?

Please don't say God did it...

  • @JuIsTheLaw It's a technique developed through decades of human introspection

  • His voice reminds me of Terence McKenna

  • @Rebphoenix hahaha, I agree. And I love it.

  • @Rebphoenix You sure it's not the topic?

  • His hand is really annoying me I wish he would stop figgiting with it !!

  • Meditation is great, and the technique used for TM works great with me.

BUT! Allthough the technique is good, the Money they want from you, the secret Mantra thing, the faked statistics, the levitation stuff... all that is bullshitting. Look up the internet, there are plenty of former TM teachers who tell you everything about that better than I could.

STILL, I meditate every day, but I don't need to get ripped off to do that on my own.

  • Yeah I do wonder why they want the money... spirituality is about love, One-ness etc., and suddenly they want your money. I'm sure this sort of meditation is amazing, but couldn't the mantras just get posted online? If so - why not? Ill tell you; no money. And I don't like that way..not when it comes to spirituality and creative minds, which I have a huge fascination for.

  • David Lynch is an oddball. TM is a cult. They want your money.

  • @donagh1954 In response to your conclusions: "David Lynch is an oddball." - Correct, in the sense that he probably has Aspberger's syndrome. "TM is a cult." - Nope. Scientology is a cult. Your skepticism is good, but TM is a technique, not a single organization. "They want your money." -I don't know about that. It does cost money to pay teachers and rent spaces. Does that mean anything that costs money is bad? What if it benefits those who pay?

  • Joolsner I have more energy, better mental focus, and overall I lose my shit over life's many frustrations on a far less frequent basis. I think I also have a greater appreciation of beauty than I used to. It basically stills my mind and gives it respite from its usual 100 mph speed. There are lots of very strong opinions being expressed here, and that's fair enough; listen to them all and draw your own conclusions, but Vedic meditation has been highly beneficial for me.

  • wasn't maharishi exposed as a fraud a long time ago?

  • meditation.....

  • When was the last time you truly appreciated and didn't take for granted something that was not free, other than air? lol but seriously one of the reasons things like TM instruction courses are not free, is that they cost, not to mention the instructors are paid, not volunteers, how many types of instruction courses college or otherwise, do you know of that are free? Maharishi the founder of TM was asked why he charged so much for the courses, his reply was so they are appreciated!

  • I dont know about you, but from what I've heard of Lynch's films, they dont exactly reflect "peace and light".

  • Tm is just another scam. And i'm disappointed that Lynch getting tricked into it. :(

  • @heywayhighway "Tm is just another scam" Exactly! Why do all of these so-called paths to enlightenment ($cientology is another one) involve some amounts of money? Sometimes large amounts.

  • @4G3NTanon Please don't compare TM to the wacko Scientologists, just look at those nuts in the eye they are vacant, scientology turns them into zombies, then look at the bliss in a meditators eyes, meditators are some of the most intelligent, creative aware people you will meet, believe it's worth every dollar. As for the L Ron Hubbard wackos they have driven people to suicide!

  • @DNAChallenge If you are so confident of of the benefits of TM, go to the James Randi Foundation and collect a million bucks. Also, adherents to wacko scams always call other wacko scams, wacko scams.

  • @4G3NTanon Meditational experience is subjective experience and therefore cannot be "proven" to someone like Randi. Subjective experience by the way does not necessarily mean not valid. Those meditating know if it works for them or not and that is valid enough.

  • @heywayhighway There's a great german/austrian documentary about TM and Lynch's commitment to it called "David wants to fly". It exposes the movement for the scam it has turned into.

  • @jogennotsuki Shame it's not in English. The thing is, I think it works but I do agree it's a rip-off.

I do Acem meditation which I understand is pretty much the same. Cost me £50 to learn.

  • @herbal1971 apparently, there's a US release of the movie in planning.

  • they couldn't have chosen a worst interviewer.

  • What Hagelin talks about TM is just bullshit, honstly, He disabled commens to his vieo on it, for good reasons. First of all, he says TM is a mental technique. No, no real meditation is mental in any way, it is metarational, centered in the heart chakra. Focusing inside is never mental because the mental is periphery, thought is the past. Read only Krishnamurti to know more, or Maharshi. Meditation for Westerners does not work in most cases, in our culture this process was called introspection.

  • Yes, I know very well about this program for prisoners. I have supported highly violent prisoners as a lawyer for more than ten years. But Kundalini meditation is dangerous and transcendental meditation, to repeat it, is bluff. I have learnt it with Professor Dr. Suryani, Bali's foremost authority of it, and the result was ZERO. While ZEN meditation really gave results. Why? ZEN IS EARTH-BOUND, pragmatic. Transc. Med. and the whole philosophy of India is MORALISTIC and LIFE-DENYING.

  • She is very ugly and evil cunt. Lynch should walk away from her or kill cunt.

  • @zigifrojd thankyou i,m laughing inside this is the best comment ive read on youtube

  • anybody can tell why TM's course is so expensive?

  • That guy paid for my school to do that, That shit is straight bullshit all do is think of a certain fucking letter and don't think about it too hard but don't forget to say it.. Pure Foolishness

  • @tHEKiDjStACKSz

Wow, you sound like you've got life sussed already. Way to go..........

  • I started, or re-started, doing TM recently, just once a day, and I love it. I think it will stick this time. Fortunately, I learned it ages ago, when it was all the rage, at an official center in Philly. Don't remember the price exactly...$75 comes to mind...it couldn't have been much, as I was young and poor.

  • I really hate this dumb, smug, smarmy, bitch. I'm not a huge David Lynch fan...but she is just an asshole.

  • For those concerned about the course fee, please consider:

    1. Many are taught for free, e.g. prisoners.

    2. Those in actual financial hardship can apply for a scholarship.

  • Meditation isn't something that is done twice a day and then it's over. The whole point of sitting meditation is to be able to close the gap between the state you're in when you come out of meditation and when you're in. In other words, sitting meditation is a tool to be able to feel that meditative state constantly without interruption. That's the entire point. It's not a work out regime. And people who treat it as such really need to think about what the point is. They're missing out

  • everyone should learn this.....everyone with $1500.......poor people fuck off.

  • @ppauly Exactly lmao!! The price is absolutely ridiculous and really raises eyebrows as to why the fuck it must be that way. "These teachers must be paid" yeah, but you don't need $300,000 a year to live. Especially if most of the time you're in la la land. Fucking crooks

  • She doesnt understand...

  • This isn't about belief. This is a scientific discovery with extreme implications for overall health and social maturity.

  • It's funny how people like this reporter can act condescending about things that are over their head and they clearly don't understand. He is so gracious and unassuming and refreshingly REAL that idiots do seem to get arrogant with him - like they think he is naive or something - just what I have seen in some interviews. Sort of pisses me off... Like DL said, there are truckloads of ignorance.

  • Is it just me, or are all reporters simple minded airheads?

  • @MONSQUEEKY You've worded that so it sounds like you're a reporter.

  • @MONSQUEEKY no reporters are probably the stupidest in all society..just listen to any interview they are pathetic....heheheh

  • @MONSQUEEKY Yeah she gives him this look of "I don't believe you" to the suggestion that two 15-minute breaks a day for peaceful contemplation and breathing can make you feel good. I mean, what's so outrageous about that claim? There's boatloads of scientific studies about the positive effects of meditation.

  • @MONSQUEEKY or they think that the viewing public are idiots, maybe they are right, have you seen the state of entertainment on TV at the moment

  • @theviker Yeah it makes me fuckin sick... It's as if the media is specifically designed to keep people's minds trapped in a little box of ignorance, stupidity, and materialism. But than again, that type of mentality is perfect for a society of corporate consumer robots.

  • Comment removed

  • @MONSQUEEKY It's definitely not just you.

  • @MONSQUEEKY Not all, but most

  • @MONSQUEEKY

i would feel like an ant if i had to interview david lynch

  • @MONSQUEEKY most youtube comments are by cynical do-nothings - so it all balances out

  • @MONSQUEEKY lmao

  • I'm sorry, but I wouldn't spend money learning TM. With time and patience you can learn these things for free. Anyone asking for money to teach something like this is taking advantage imo.

I'm not sure exactly what Lynch's idea was, but I had presumed the money he wanted to raise was to fund TM institutes, not to make money but to raise awareness and spread TM around the world.

  • @LeJimster yeah I agree it would be cool to have TM free but I just can't see that it would be possible...

    -

I have many friends who teach TM purely out of compassion - they don't make money, in fact they barely survive.

    -

To properly learn such delicate process as transcending you need a trained teacher to make sure you don't make mistakes in straining or concentrating etc. Otherwise it is easy to get a headache etc.

    -

David Lynch Foundation has already taught 100,000 at risk kids TM for free!

  • @13314u Thats great to hear, tbh.. I'm having mixed results with TM "style" meditation, but I live in a very stressful and noisy house which is very distracting.. So I'm blaming my situation rather than the techniques right now.

Glad to know that some people tutor for free, as I certainly would and will when I get the technique nailed down. I've learned most other meditation techniques from books etc and it can be tricky getting that sweet spot :).

  • I wrote here about 3 months ago when I first started TM. I have not missed a single session and I am starting to see results. I am off my anti-depressants and feel less anxious. The most dramatic result I've had was when I realised that this chronic back pain I had in between my shoulder which I've had for years and years simply disappeared. I suppose the pain was through tension and with TM my back feels more relaxed. I am already creative and paint but have not seen any dramatic results yet.

  • Him "So when are you going to start meditating?" Her( thinking) uh, "When you fork over 1500.00 buckaroos bucko"

  • Doug Henning the magician was way into it, and he still died of cancer.......

  • great....I've start TM in 1983...What Mr.Lynch says is true...

    Good luck David........

  • His hand was fascinating.

  • Everyone's jealous because he's the happiest man alive. That's how it should be for everyone! Why can't we be all happy?

  • Interesting... I did not know until recently that he was involved in this kind of stuff.

  • @opentolife me either, but now I can see a lot of Lynch in Agent Cooper from Twin Peaks right? :)

  • It's a reporters job to find bullshit counter questions to disrupt the flow of conversation. It's the way of American media. Just watch fox news for a little bit.

  • I wish his movies didn't get so crummy :(

  • This is my first time seeing this video and it has made Mr. Lynch that much cooler. TM is one of the best things ever, and studies now show a correlation between meditation and increase of gray matter in the hippocampus, and prefrontal lobe.

  • David Lynch is a fricken genius! He is doing such good for the world.

  • @HerrMannelig - She's no different than 99.99% of the world's population who are unfamiliar with the experience David is describing. Why would you criticize her? You don't have to answer that, I already know the answer.

  • i heard its 1500 dollars

  • It's a great idea to provide a space for people to unplug from the world and go inside for a while. I went on a 10-day silence retreat called Vipassana for FREE. They are loacated all over the world and do not impose any sort of dogma. Just pure, clean meditation. I was well taken of, good organic food, new room of my own. No cellphones, no talking, I LOVED IT!

  • @ArtsAlign

    That sounds relaxing.

  • Why do I have to pay 900 smackos to learn TM? It's a pity!

  • @BrideAndGroomFilmsHD Because otherwise no one could teach you properly. TM takes quite a bit of follow up by the teacher and this is ensure you are practicing correctly. Otherwise you may strain and get a headache.

The teachers are basically on minimum wage if they put in the hours for each person.

But it's worth it - I personally wouldn't give up my TM even if I was paid a billion bucks!

  • @13314u That makes sense, thanks. I still think 900 smackos is a bit steep.

  • CBC crap infomercial journalism.

  • why do i wanna smack the smirk off her face?

  • ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  • I've just did my first TM session today! I felt peaceful and restful. I've been told by my instructor that it builds up over sessions like exercise. I'm excited to see where this leads and to see if what they say about TM is true. I didn't feel the escalator thing David is talking about but I've definately felt it was a much easier form of meditation than controlling your breathing or concetrating on something. If any of you wants to know how I progress, message me.

  • @joolsner Of course you didn't feel the escalator thing, you are not trying to raise money for a global TM empire: (:

  • Meditation in general is awesome. I've just started and it's really inspiring. It gives great joy.

I really wish TM was free. The point would really get across, then.

  • It IS free, and easy to learn. Check my video on my channel on how to do it ;)

  • @AgainstTM you should really visit a TM center and give TM another try. you're "critique" isn't really one at all because there is no logical critique. anytime where you find a critique of TM, you should also see a logical fallacy.

  • well TM is just an commercialised meditation..

probably doesnt differ much from the other meditations..

so its just money money making.

  • @Paracaz I just want to remind people that most of these organizations are trying to do a good thing by spreading this around and they can't do it without funding. I haven't figured out how to live without money in todays society and I doubt anyone else here has either. However, mindful of non integral money making schemes? Yes.

  • @Paracaz Different meditations are actually very... well... different! This is a scientific fact, verified by a lot of research.

TM has been involved in a number of comparative studies on different meditation techniques, and in all such studies that I know of, it has come out on top - significantly.

Learning TM also involves a lot more 1-on-1 instruction and followup than most other techniques, hence TM being more expensive. Bigger cost -> more extensive course -> better results.

  • @2HundredPercent I got a student discount for learning TM and I think it was the best investment I have made in my whole life. It has literally saved my life. I was skeptical at first and now I can see it basically works. Folks, it basically works!

  • @herbal1971 The great thing about it is that it really is free. There are many forms of Meditation out there. Without being bias to a particular style meditation could be said to be generally very powerful and affective.

  • @herbal1971 Professional meditation teachers have the same living expenses as everyone else, and therefore must charge for their services.

If meditation teachers were able to get free food, housing, cars, health care, etc, then I'm sure they'd be happy to teach meditation for free!

  • @2HundredPercent Well said!

  • @herbal1971

I have to agree with your point. I don't understand why a method of meditation like TM has to be so costly!??! If it was $100 or something I would gladly pay it but last I heard, the cost was in the thousands!!! Hwo can you help people when you alienate them due to lask of funds. makes no sense!

  • @Delisle4 Actually they do have student discounts so it's not all that costly. But the reason is that most people take for granted what they get for free or pay very little for, when you pay hard earned money to learn something you usually don't procrastinate and learn it!

  • @DNAChallenge

    Very true..

  • @herbal1971 By "meditation" do you mean TM? I see you posted this 9 mo. ago. Are you still at it? If so, how's it going? If not, why not? I'm guessing from your name that you were born in '71 (like me). I'm considering trying TM at this point in my life. Any info you have would be great. Thanks.

  • @SubconsciousGatherer Hi there. I was doing a meditation I learnt from a set of tapes, which seemed to work well for me. Then I got out of the habit but then wanted to start up again a couple of months ago and found out about Acem meditation, which is very inexpensive and is a mantra meditation like TM but not a silly amount of money. I did a course in London and really enjoyed it.

You're supposed to do 30-45 minutes a day but I do manage 10 minutes of it most days. It's very good.

  • The course was only £50 but I think it's a worldwide thing so you should be able to find something near you.

Something about turning 40 makes us reflective, I guess. :)

Hope that helps. Any questions, feel free to ask.

  • Comment removed

  • It certainly didn't cost me 2-3k to learn meditation, but I can tell you it was worth every penny I spent! Totally changed my life, and it's by far my best habit.

  • Happy to hear that, would you like to share more??

    thanks

  • Sure. I learned in London in 2007, and have been practising ever since. What else would you like to know?

  • @tommymp69 If I may ask, what benefits are you seeing?

  • the world needs more people like this. and i loves his movies, so creative

  • There will be a movie coming out this may, exposing this transcendential meditation thing as the total con it is. It is called "David wants to fly".

Maharashi is a liar and con man.

  • His hand reminds me of freddy krueger

  • @jayellucaz; I totally agree with you. There is a price tag on everything nowadays, even peace of mind. This may not be a religion, but it appears as extorsionate as scientology.

  • @magiccarpetride231

i don't know about transcendental meditation, but lynch is great

  • Taking any short, foreign word will not work, and the reasons are a bit long to explain.

It might relax you a bit, but it won't take your metabolism down about 16-20%, (2-3 times deeper than deep sleep) which is what happens with TM. The mantra is empowered and it is such that it draws the mind deeper and deeper towards Silence. Ordinary words don't work like that. Yes, TM is a bit expensive. No, it can't be emulated by repeating 'Cafe' mentally for 30 minutes. Try it, then try TM, and see.

  • I love what he says and his look. I don't get all the hand stuff. To me, it distracts from what he's saying.

What he's saying is very profound and I think many people are distrustful of TM.

I have never practiced but I would like to give it a try. I can't go to his school but I would like to give TM a try.

  • this woman is so annoying

  • I got interested in TM. I searched the web and found out that to learn it is very expensive. Like 2 to 3 thousand dollars. Is there any alternative??

  • On DLF tv is a video of a pro skateboarder called Zarosh, who practices TM. In the vid is a kid, who's a fan of Zarosh and thought it was expensive, but wanted to learn TM for his birthday. In the end, he got a scholarship to learn. It doesn't necessarily mean that everyone can get a scholarship; it just shows that if you really want something, it will happen.

  • no way, try HOLOSYNC. It works great for me.

  • Basically, You will have to pay a teacher to give you a word and a key to say it in your head. The course does cost between $2 -3000, psychology shows that after departing with that amount of money, you really will believe in it. This is not a bad thing. The TM organisation is non profit. What I say is pick a short, simple word out of a dictionary you don't know the meaning of, foreign will be better as you won't hear it in conversation, don't look at its meaning and any music key and use that

  • agree with everything he says except the "elevator bit". I dont belive that the bliss is so instantaneous. It takes a bit of 'practice' if you want to call it that.

That kind of belief (instant satisfaction on first attempt) would turn people off when their naughty mind kept interrupting them throughout the whole 20 minutes.

If people want to experience bliss on their first go like that they'd wanna take a valium or two beforehand heheh

  • Anger is such a useless emotion. It only causes problems. It's great that David shares his experience of how TM helped him eliminate that anger and stress.

  • I disagree, somewhat. I believe that anger is there for a reason and can be useful to a degree if kept in check. If you allow it to consume you or stay with you or develop into rage, then it is very destructive. But I believe that anger can serve a purpose if you allow yourself to feel it, experience it, acknowledge it and why it's there, and then let it go.

  • I see what your saying, and think your right on several levels. But I'm thinking big: Like, a world that is so peaceful that the emotion of anger is basically nonexistent, and therefore rendered useless. It's kind of on the level of fantasy, but i think the world might, one day, be
