  • I absolutely love Steve Hackett's tone, especially on those slides during Guarenteed Eternal Sanctuary Man suite

  • Wow, a lot of butthurt Elton John fans on here. I do happen to be entitled to my own opinion.

  • just your standard 23 minute, ABABCCCCDEEAFGGGGGGHHIIJIKKLLLMMMMLLLNBCEEEE format song

  • Caralho, essa música é foda... e as partes. individualmente são mjuito legais!!

  • As for the costumes, Peter's said that this is what he thought the needed to do to get people to pay attention to them, and add a degree of depth to the performances. Whether or not that's really true is up to ya'll to decide.

  • Wow, good range of opinions on here. A thing for you: There's an interview with Phil from the early 1980's when he was talking about his time in Genesis during this era, and how much he hated progressive rock "Oh god, bands like Yes, I couldn't stand them.".....and what a horrifying moment when he realized he was IN one. Hilarious.

  • just can't get into it... sorry, not for my taste

  • o melhor do mundo

  • When I started to listen to Pink Floyd, I thought I would never listen to anything as good again. But now I can't stop listening Genesis. Peter is awesome... that is what I call PERFORMANCE. This is not just fucking good music, this is real ART!

  • i'm just curious- exactly what kind of/how many drugs would i have to be on to like this?

now for the predictable people who will say 'none', i want to also ask-

how many drugs were THEY on, when they made this? i mean, just LOOK at them. i don't know what would be worse, if they were or weren't on drugs, because if they weren't there would be no excuse. if they were, then jesus... i'd like to know so i can decide to never take any. ever. everyone thinking about taking them should watch this.

  • @ToxicBrainSludge i have no clue if they were on drugs. it was the 70's so it's truly anyone's guess. if you don't like this, that's clearly an opinion. the fact about genesis is this: this group of musicians were one of the most talented acts of that era and launched two of the biggest solo careers since that time - Peter Gabriel & Phil Collins.

  • @wtfIZgoinonYO as i said, drugs would at least explain this horrible video. just look at it. anyway, ok so maybe they were good musicians. but good musicians are a dime a dozen, even famous ones. how many other big name bands are from the 70s that could be written up like you did for genesis, as being one of the best? a hundred? not all of them dressed or acted like total weirdos to get attention either. yes many did. but don't blame me if i read into something like that. it's asked for.

  • @ToxicBrainSludge while i'll agree this music video isn't on par of the works of Jodorowsky, Cassavetes, Antonioni, who were prominent film makers of the time this video was produced the musical prowess of genesis cannot be called into question. it's a fact.

  • What year is this? Tony has the ARP pro soloist and the RMI Electra Piano so it's at least half way through 73. But it could be later...

  • that was a real show...

Costumes, insane music, emotion, colors... wow

  • genesis the best!!!!

  • this is an amazing song, its more a symphony movement than pop music.

it is hard to think this would work today, interesting music that pushing the envelope is weeded out today thanks to America idol and the likes of it, conformity is premiered, i am happy that youtube exist so I can chose what to see and listen to....

  • oh lord i hope thats a wig, and peter gabriel was not sporting a mullet

  • @angelfang Haha, unfortunately, no. While I admit this video quality is not flattering and their styles were much better in person, Peter did shave a few inches into his forehead, called a "reverse Mohican" hairstyle, kind of showing his early interest in African sorts of styles (which he'd show later in his music, like in Biko). It doesn't look that nice, but it was a classic look for him, and heck, it's better than the bald look he has now! (Although he has aged quite nicely! :])

  • @GettingEmOutByFriday lol i liked how he looked when he was about 22, and just had the nice long, (pre mullet hair)

  • I hate the "star" super-effect!

  • Awesome

  • I wish i was burn in the 70´s :(

  • @radamanthys451

iam borned in 1965 and can tell you....it was great.

  • @radamanthys451 You;re not alone, my friend. Your'e not alone

  • Gabriel is the best image of Genesis. I love him, he's my idol.

But the soul of Genesis is and always will be Tony Banks, a brilliant composer... it doesn't matter if early or latter days and with respect for the great talent of Hacket, Rutherford and Collins, all top musicians indeed. But it's necessary to be fair for the MOST important generator of those magnificent tunes and atmospheres that made Genesis music so special, charming and misterious. Banks is for Genesis what Squire is for Yes.

  • @ScudoBR I could not of said it better. I will add that Banks and Hackett were great "texurists" a term I have used to describe what they created.

You could add 1000 hours of music to film for what Genesis has made and one day it will ..

  • @ScudoBR What I've always said, Banks is the core of the band. It's why it transcended Peter to Phil.

  • @ScudoBR Best comment on youtube...I agree with everything you said XD

  • This creeps me out in a 'silence if the lambs, dancing naked in front of the mirror' sort of way. LOVE it. :)

  • this is one of the bes tsongs i've hear in my life..so this is the genesis that should have be always...but the "phil´s time" wasn't bad..

  • Masterpice. Peter is a fucking genius.

  • yes he is

  • watch this blown : BEST trip ever

  • This is also Phil Collins Gensis.

  • 26 and ardent

  • Its both? Yes!!

  • I think I like this more now than I did when I was 15 years old. Aging isn't entirely a bad thing.

  • If you remove i, ill find you and kill you =).

  • realmente hay que tener oídos, para entrar en esta dimension, pero se nos ofrece esta posibilidad de estar escuchando a músicos que hace tantos años alcanzaron la pureza y la pudieron expresar..

  • Pete is more of an artist than Phil as a frontman- Collins is a sugary snack with popular appeal- like Sting- Dire Straits and Chris DeBurgh- The kind of mediocrity that thinks it's the shit- -favoured by BMW drivers- Pete is authentic- He has complexity- He is bipolar by all accounts- they call it 'the genius disease'

  • Comment removed

  • GABRIEL AT HIS BEST!!!!!!! FUCKIN BRILLIANT!!!

  • Foxtrot has been created in a haunted mansion in 72 : supper's ready is about their strange adventures through that house ! Just hear the lyrics, you will understand !

  • please reunite

  • Peter's Genesis is so many times better than phil's one...

this is real genesis :* u have to get through this music to enjoy it fully :*

  • @VoooooooDooooooo -Without Pete- the band became like a chocolate snack- but it increased their popular appeal- With Pete in front there was a darker deeper edge- On the balance- real Art tends to be more challenging than popular art- With PG they were that much more authentic- PC is Mr Showbiz- PG is authentic- and- if you haven't sensed it- bipolar by all accounts- They call it 'the genius disease'-

  • @keltyk absolutely right :)

sorry for asking this but can anybody tell me what "rael" means ? peter uses it so many times and i dunno what that means..

  • @VoooooooDooooooo -'Rael' is the character in the concept album Lamb Lies Down on Broadway- Played by Peter Gabriel in the stage show tour of it too- A New York street 'punk'- grafitti vandal- before punk rock- and sort of prophetic of it punk maybe- Maybe a Hispanic name- Unsure why he chose it- Perhaps because it's like GabRIEL- Or IsRAEL- Just guessing- There is also a religeion called RAELism- which I know nothing about-

  • @keltyk thanks :) and can i download that concept ? does the video exist anymore?

  • @VoooooooDooooooo - You could easily buy the album on CD- or download it- I'm sure-- I think there are bits of film of it on Youtube if you search for Lamb Lies Down on Broadway- There may well be a full version on DVD- I don't know-- If there isn't an official one- somebody surely must have bootlegged it- it's too good not to

  • @VoooooooDooooooo - The album and the original Lamb tour was in 1975-- with Peter Gabriel- that's what you should search for

  • @keltyk is it just a concert ? or something like "musical film" or "musicl" or i dont know how it's called.

  • @VoooooooDooooooo - It was a concert done like a show- PG singing while being the 'Rael' character- changing costumes- Bits of film on big screens behind the band- Multimedia the call it these days- They toured it widely and on Youtube you'll find bits of it- There seems to have been another- later version of the tour in 78- also on Youtube- Strange as PG had left in 75- Maybe he rejoined for another tour- I'm sure it's just as good as the 1975 version

  • @keltyk I think you got that idea because Pete played the title track during his first or second tour (not sure which). But, yes, you are correct.

  • Comment removed

  • @VoooooooDooooooo This isn't music. Is ART.

  • @Ornothrus music IS actually an art

  • @VoooooooDooooooo Behind the Lines / Duchess / Duke's Travel / Duke's end : how can you tell that Peter work is better than Phil's one?

And don't forget that Genesis is not just Peter and Phil : It's also Mike, Steve and Tony...

  • @shu62 I agree with some of what you say, but naming off some of their best pop schlock won't do much to the ardent prog fan.

And none of Phil-led Genesis could hold a candle to albums Nursery Cryme through Lamb.

  • @MasterYumyums

A trick of the tail / Wind and wuffering / Duke are as good as Pete-led albums. Duke's travel -end is so beautiful, and are not pop songs. Dance on a volcano, One for the vine, Entangled, All in a mouse's night... So beautiful songs and not pop ones.

So stop with this arguments : ALL GENESIS IS GOOD. Even "Calling all stations" 's got good songs just as "The dividing line".

  • @shu62 My main point here is that there's no point in trying to tell people that your opinion is right (which I'm guilty of in the below comment too).

The fact is, a lot of people who like progressive Genesis don't really like the 80's output, while most fans of their more 80's records have barely heard of their old and weird past. While I'm glad you like both, (I mostly do too, and Trick is fantastic), a lot of people will disagree, and that's their right.

    Besides, arguing is fun.

  • @shu62 Genesis's Top 20 songs should consist only gabriel's songs broo))

  • @VoooooooDooooooo Home by the Sea / Domino / Driving the last spike / One for the vine / Me and Sarah Jane should be in this top 20 ;)

  • @shu62 Your sound like pop-listener with that kinda opinion :P

  • @VoooooooDooooooo One for the vine, pop song? Troll spotted

  • @shu62

    exactly.

  • I feel relaxed and emotionally regenerated when I watch this epocal and marvellous video.

  • thing I love about Prog rock is how unique every band is, play me 10 seconds of any prog song and I can probably tell you what band it is, not many other genres have that.

  • genesis is good, yes is phenomenal!

  • I'm so happy my Dad raised me on Genesis, and not Elton fucking John.

  • @RD2006 Elton actually was fucking John i think.

  • @RD2006

...what's wrong with Elton john?? his early albums were pretty damn good..

  • @Manu9078 he thinks hes cool sayin that

  • @RD2006 don't diss elton, his pop now seems as a prog-rock compared to nowadays shite.

  • @skutratufahija modern music isn't all shit. There are still masterpieces in modern music, you just have to look for them.

  • @RD2006 What's wrong with Elton John? He's a bloody good musician and songwriter and Genesis is by far one of the greatest bands in rock history.

  • @grahamdawson09 I agree with you bro. Elton John is a great musician. Some people just like to confine their music tastes. :D

  • @RD2006 True, but there's much much worse than Elton John.

  • @RD2006

youre dad was fucking RIGHT , man.

A PROGGER can not be a bad guy, and

GENESIS is simply the best, fuck the rest

  • @RD2006 Hey, what's wrong with Elton John? He's a good singer and songwriter, but it's obvious that Genesis are way better!

  • @DreamLizard and especially "Tumbleweed Connection" which Elton once said he prefered to do but......

  • @RD2006 I'm so glad my Dad raised me on both. And a shitload more. You dumbass.

  • @RD2006 I'm happy my Dad didn't raise me to be a dumbfuck like you.

  • Does it get any better than this?!!? We used to put this stuff on at parties YEAR'S ago, and everyone's jaw would drop. The early Genisis album's would take you to places you had never been before! With or without drug's. GREAT!!!!!

  • insane.

  • mamm' ce pall'

  • LOL...poor Cindy!

  • the greatest moment of prog.

  • @SylvermanMusic They took a hit when Gabriel left the band, but there was still so much talent left. Steve Hackett, Tony Banks, Phil and Mike. In my opinion, the incredible music still happened, up to "Then There Were Three". Some of those songs still had magic... They lost the magic with "Duke", yet the cruel joke was how they became so successful when they went commercial. We wanted to "Say It's Alright, Joe" but instead it left a "Misunderstanding" and they could never "Turn It On Again."

  • I like cheeseburgers.

  • this song is a allegory for Revelations....and life....its Gabriels acid inspired vision.

  • @craigalan100 "acid inspired vision"? What on earth have you read?

  • @craigalan100 Peter never took acid, as far as I read in a Genesis book, the first verse was actually as a result of him accidentally eating hash brownies and getting incredibly paranoid and scared, the rest of it is probably allegorical as you said. It could be a conglomeration of different things. More esoteric lyricists aren't always known to have a set "meaning" in place.

  • Immortal, that's what they are.For us who only had this music on vilyl and no chance to see them live this is a real treat.I also liked the early post Gabriel era,but after that it all became fast food.Somehow the ex Pink Floyd boys are still very good live, while Genesis is not the same.

  • Thank you, what memories this has sparked, you've made my day!

  • I would like to see all original members reunite (this time with the London Philharmonic) preforming this masterpiece classic! Strings and all! What a sight to see and hear!

  • I just saw Hackett a couple of weeks ago in a free concert here in this park in downtown NY. Check it here in Youtube "Steve Hackett at Battery Park".

  • Couple of observations:

Live versions of "Supper's Ready" were so much better than the one that appeared on Foxtrot. I don't know what the real difference is but it sounds to me that it's in a different key because Gabriel does not have to strain himself to hit the notes as he does on the studio version (especially at the end of the song).

I love watching Collins drum because he does it so effortlessly. Just this serene look on his face even during difficult bits.

  • love gabriel dancing that bit in the intro!

  • My favorite Genesis tracks are always the ones in which Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins harmonize their vocals. Their voices are similar and compliment each other really well.

  • Note the pentagrams behind/around Gabriel..not exactly the emblem of the Guaranteed Eternal Sanctuary Man...(GOD).... but some..one(thing) more sinister.. that.....(in blood) is writng the lyrics of a brand new TUNE !!! The tune to which the NWO want us 2 dance 2 !!!!

  • Hey MrBazzabee....2012 !! You're right !!! but what will happen after the SUPPER of the MIGHTY ONE ??????..Will there B ..Dragons.. coming.. out _of _the _sea?!!,or will our bodies melt ???--No,-none of this, however ..666 WILL get out the marrow in your backbone and then we'll B under the soil-a soil-a soil !!!

  • wow i cut my hair like this and i haven't even ever seen peter gabriel

  • this was my first real prog-song, I ever listened to and I was convert to the best music in world: progressive rock =)

  • Peter is like creepy in this video..like i'm pretty sure if a kid saw some of his close ups they would cry...thats awesome!! Its awesom he can look scary and in the back ground its this lovely acoustic music..its brilliant!!! Its more frightening than like sabbaths hard metal or Coopers stage antics but this isn't metal music...i love this guy!!!

  • the song is 20 -22 minutes long ..I used to love it . everybody loves it. :P

  • This video is awesome.

  • Best rock band EVER!!! But only the old stuff, nothing after Trick of the Tale, like that ABACAB crap. Supper's Ready is a great song. This was when Genesis was more original, creative and interesting.

  • Awesome master piece from a time that bands had inspiration to create great stuff, intention to make sense with what they are playing, dedication to develop their ideas as better as they could and talent to take all that to the stage. So different of the current era that popstars think first on videoclips and how they'll look in it :).

  • Gabriel is a musician not only a singer and you can hear that not only when he play the flaute but also in the way he sing

  • @MasiaBox

Yea... Gabriel is a wonderful composer and multi-talented musician... he started as a drummer... he plays the fute... piano too... he is undoubtedly the best and the most unpredictable and versatile prog singer of all times... and he's my idol :)

  • Wow, thanks so much for this! I hadn't seen this song live. Love anything prog/acid rock-y, and old Genesis is just amazingly sublime. They couldn't/wouldn't make music like this today, and if they did, the record companies would quash it. Great stuff!

  • what nonsense

  • Is this performance on the genesis ('70-'75) box set?

  • Haha, at 5:40, I think Phil sings "Share his" by accident :P

  • i'm overwhelmed by the volume of great work he has done; he still a fuckin pretentious asshole who thinks he is better than genesis; fuck him

  • Someone in my 'Local' (Pub) said "Peter Gabriel was a member of 'Peter & Gordon' who did 'A world without love' in the 60's" I was so happy to put him right!!!

  • peter gabriel is overrated. couldn't be at the hall fo f ame. fuck that pretenious piece of shit, better than he left and phil collins stepped in

  • @cindyyouask Peter Gabriel is one of the greatest musicians ever, He isn't overrated. His era with genesis was the much better part if you actually listen to the lyrics or the music. Phil collins is a good musician, but when he led Genesis it was way more mainstream. In my opinion, and many other peoples opinions im sure, the Peter Gabriel led era was better

  • @musicman1783 he is overrated peter is doing an album of covers; he was too fuckin arrogant to make the hall of fame; he is an highly overrated douchebag;

  • @cindyyouask So what, he's doing an album of covers probably because he's older now. I would like to see you write as many masterpieces as he has

  • "Seconds Out" is what I had in mind when I said that Phil Collins is one of the worst live singers ever. His version of this song on that live set is atrocious.

  • Hey, that drummer isn't bad --- if the lead singer ever leaves the group, maybe the drummer should step up and sing. But don't tell me what happens. (Spoiler alert)

  • @nytimes19992000 Lemmy from Motorhead became the new singer.....oh, bollocks, I told you! It would never be the drummer. 'Fish' from Marillion, Maybe! But NEVER the drummer!

  • That hair is awful, Peter Gabriel.

  • 'That' is an inverted mohawk, nytimes.

    It's awesome :P

  • This whole song/video doesn't belong to this world... as we know it.

Five fire ball stars******. The GENESIS!!!

P.S. In the Rock and Roll Universe of Talent since 1969.

  • I'm scared...

  • This says it all.

How many groups of musicians can replicate this. And if they did, they cannot honestly say they had the freedom of mind to write such.

  • @mensamoo MICHAEL TSARION IS THE WORLDS PREMIER CONSPIRACY RESEARCHER/LECTURER/AUTHOR. DR. BILL DEAGLE AND JORDAN MAXWELL ARE HIGHLY INFORMATIVE AS WELL. P.S. MELTING EUPHORIA IS A HOLISTIC PSYCHEDLIC PROG ROCK BAND THAT IS NOW DEFUNCT BUT HAS FOUR STUDIO CD'S AND ARE SIMILAR TO OZRIC TENTACLES AND GONG.

  • that is why pretentious fuckface peter gabriel showed up to play a show

stuck up overrated asshole peter gabriel is. Yeah he is so great he reunited Genesis to do a few shows..NOT..he is a fuckin asshole

  • @cindyyouask Even though a reunion with Gabriel would be phenomonal, I'd love to see it; but in Gabriel's mind I can't blame him for refusing. I just can't picture a 60-year old man donning masks & make-up. Not that it would come to that extreme, but I'm sure the older fans would want it to recapture the era. It's not that PG is insensitive, it's simply his own personal choice not to live in the past. You can't condemn someone for simply refusing to dive in the fountain of youth and relive it.

  • @gowestward1 it was rock in roll hall of fame not donning masks. Peter Gabriel is just a fuckin arrogant asshole

  • @cindyyouask You have no idea what you are talking about fuckwad. Why don't you invest some time listening to Genesis with Gabriel? Maybe you'd understand their storytelling approach. PG played a different character for every song. They set new standards for live performance.

  • @LordFancourt cindy is a poor brain! peter is also a great man, when he goes in Sardegna (where he has an home) is very gentle and quiet and funny with all persons that he meet...

    merci !!!

  • i do agree that this is one of the sophistication of this music is phenomenal and that its among some of the greatest of all time (gabriel genesis is a favorite), but youre soo mistaken in your comment about it going away today.

i think most people generalize and say that about new music because they are ignorant to bands out there that are still upholding genesis' and yes' legacy, eg Animal Collective, Sigur Ros, Andrew Bird, Beirut, Arcade Fire, RJD2, etc. I think youre uninformed.

  • To rhodzy123: I can tell you that I am not uninformed, I know all the bands you mention in your response to CrayfishDude, and precisely they all do demonstrate very well the lack of sophistication of the music of today, IM-shared-HO.

  • I'm the rad conservative. This music is of my era. The sophistication of the music and the talent that it took to make it does seem have gone away from anything we can expect to listen today. Those of us who are old enough should remember some examples of music that we loved to rally against when we went to concerts where Prog/Rock was at it's peak. Dare I include the word Disco here? You may also recall the southern rock sound of this same era. Prog/Rock music was never as "pop" as we wanted!

  • This is one of those songs that almost makes you scared to listen through completely.

It's just so artistic and beautiful that sometimes I'm afraid of possibly crying or just bursting into madness from it's overload of sophistication and beauty

  • I couldn't properly articulate the experience of listening to early Genesis until now.

    Good comment, dude :)

  • @jwild611 it's strange because I feel the same way !

  • Best song of all time. Period. End of story.

  • Sublime and brilliant-mystifying and incomprehensible to todays kids, brought up on a diet of garbage as they are.

  • @gruffmeister44 i probably fit the description of 'todays kids' , and think your comment is incredibly ignorant and something I would only expect 'kids' to say.

Who are you to judge others musical tastes? Disappointing

  • Ke$sha = number one album of January.

Britney Spears = numerous number one albums the last 10 years.

Todays music is meaningless, unoriginal, programmed by cycnical middle aged business men shit. Case closed.

  • @TheRadicalLiberal Your facts do make sense, there is a lot of poor quality music nowadays, but there is a huge amount of very good music as well. I'm sure this was the same case in the 60s/70s (Beatles=bad?), I wasn't alive then so can't say for certain.

'Todays music' WAY too big of a generalisation, the charts are irrelevant in this day and age,

also irrelevant in the 70s? Genesis' first album reached 98 in the UK chart

  • Brought up on a diet of garbage? It's not like anyone with taste actually likes that stuff. That's just what people listen to when their mates are around to impress. Pretty sad really. No I like a lot of good stuff :)

  • @gruffmeister44 im 15 and i just composed a guitar solo in 15/16... Not all of 'todays kids' listen to ke%sha or whatever... i get your point, though; ive been trying to spread the word of genesis but Dance on a Volcano seems surprisingly unappealing to them... ;)

  • @gruffmeister44 Incomprehensible. Right, 15 years old here, and I love this. Learn to not be ignorant yeah?

  • @harysmall Good for you pal, spread the word eh :)

  • @gruffmeister44 Ha sorry I was rude. But I hate being lumped up with others.

  • Comment removed

  • @gruffmeister44 im 18 years old. been listening to genesis since the age of 6, i can swear to you this song is perfectly undestandable to me. Foxtrot and Trespass are far their best albums. with peter gabriel, of course. Nothing against phil but still, Peter Gabriel is the real genesis.

  • @Rick1213

Foxtrot and Trespass, but not Nursery Cryme? Maybe Selling England by The Pound deserves to be on that list?

    @gruffmeister44

I'm 27. Today, while sorting insects in a petri dish under a microscope, I sang along with 3 of the 4 albums mentioned in this post. I knew all the words. In the past few weeks, I've read entire books by Milan Kundera, Henry Miller, Gabriel Garcia-Marquez, Tom Robbins, and now I'm chewing on some Borges.

Maybe YOUR generation's intestines are full of garbage!

  • @gruffmeister44 lol, true

  • @gruffmeister44 Less people probably go to art college and have access to mind altering drugs today. Ergo the incomprehensibility.
