I don't get to watch much NASCAR since I live in the UK and lack Sky. but looking at this makes me remember that this is Motor Sports at it's very best. Whenever I visit the USA, i am so checking out some NASCAR.
Lot of proud Mainers on this day...Ricky only won 2 Winston Cup races (the other a duel with Jarrett at Martinsville) but they were both classics...this finish still gives me goose bumps!
i was jumping up and down on the couch, and fell off! my friends thought i was nuts 1/2 of them never seen a race b4. i told them i had been watching nascar since 86-87 and never seen one that close. wow. listen to D.W. hilarious
The first NASCAR race I ever attended also, couldn't see the Start / Finish line from turn two! Didn't know what had happened until the next night while watching a re- broadcast on SPEED channel in a Alabama motel!
Ricky Is known for really close finishes! Look at martinsville with jarett and here at darlington! he is a really good racer and deserves another chance to drive.
Darlington was the first race I went to, and it was the best time I've ever had, and it was really cool to me, that for my first race up close I got to go to my 2nd fav. track... my personal fav. track is Talladega... But I love Darlington for great racing, and the history... It was the first time I've ever been to a venue and was intimidated...
I go to the california races and even I think its bull crap that they took the southern 500 away...and on top of that its 110 degrees in cali that weekend...and they wonder why no one goes lol...i still think this is a close 2nd to the harvick win in 01 at alanta, just because that win i think really saved the sport from a long hangover...
While there have been so many other finishes worthy of being "the best" finish in NASCAR history, in my opinion, this is IT. It is an absolute classic, defining the intensity of stock car racing: A side-by-side, beating and banging sprint to the checkered flag decided by mere inches! Love it!
the main reason i dont really watch nascar anymore is because they got rid of the Southern 500, a crown jewel in the sport, ill never forgive them for that
One of the best finishes ever....at one of the best tracks ever. That's why I LOVE DARLINGTON! Everyone has their race they look forward to each year...Bristol...Daytona...Talladega. For me it's Darlington. Great track...tons and tons of history.....never disappointed with any race at Darlington. It's a driver's track....the guy who can drive the track the best will win....love it love it LOVE IT!
Pretty much. Since then, Busch has won a championship and Craven has dropped off the face of the earth. But hey, he'll always have this feather in his cap, hell of a finish.
I SOOOO remember this like it was yesterday. I recall screaming at the TV for Craven to win; he needed some good luck after all his bad luck! I cry with happiness every time I watch this. We need more finishes like this one!!
By far one of the best nascar finishes ever and by far one of my favorites, I'll never forget my grandfather's reaction to this finish..... Priceless!
I was in the stands that day on turn two. I left with thirty laps to go to beat the traffic.Later when I found out about the finish I didn't feel too bad because where my seat was I couldn't see the start / finish line anyway.
Have you ever? NO I'VE NEVER!! That's why I LOOOOOOOVE Darlington! That's why I LOOOOOOVE NASCAR........best finish ever.....my God! I still get chills watching it! Doesn't matter who the two drivers are...just plain good racin' the way it should be!
"ITS GONNA BE A DRAG RACE!"
"THEY TOUCH!, THEY TOUCH!"
Not only the best finish, but the best last 5 laps leading to it. And CLASSIC commentary.

The Best Race Finish call ever! You can just picture Mike, Larry, and D.W. about jumping up and down in the booth at the end.

Ok.. I confess.. apparently NASCAR CAN be exciting.
Bearfoot 2 years ago 3
Whaddaya mean CAN be exciting, I don't know where you've been, but NASCAR is WAAAY more exciting than most forms of sports.
ilovetogofast88 2 years ago 3
The problem is that it's only truly exciting in the last 10 or so laps.
But I guess the level of intensity varies from person to person.

True

darlington is a well designed course
you can hit the wall and get away with it, and you can get sideways.

nascar desperately needs another finish like this in 2009 to restore faith in a lot of people including me.
