Lets be fair, Im glad the first base ump got the call right, dont get me wrong, but you need to expect that the other manager is going to come out and give you a hard time, and frankly you deserve it for being out of position and not making the right call. I have no idea what he said to get ejected, but he was entitled to scream at the guy.
Good on these umps for getting the call right. The first coach did the right thing by being reasonable and simply asking the ump to ask the homeplate ump what he saw, call gets reversed. Good on em. I know butch was pissed, and I would be too, but at the end of the day its about getting the call right PERIOD
Kudos to the 2 umpires for remembering that above all, the important thing is to get the call right. The 1B umpire took a bit of shit, as he should have, and then Butch went too far, so he got what he deserved. Kudos as well to the Spirit manager for his calm, rational argument. This should be shown to all coaches in all cities, states, provinces.
That dumbfuck coach doesn't know the rules. And umpires can ask for an appeal if there is any doubt as to the call being right. The moment the appeal overturns the play then tough shit. Game over. The umps got the call correct on appeal. I wish more umps would do this. That coach is a whiny little bitch.
Now you know why Umpires HATE to reverse desitions....its nut's like these. They did the right thing by reviewing and making the "Correct" call and they get spat at. The other coach would of accepted either outcome too.
I played for Butch in 2005 during my rookie year. Man do I have some funny tales about my short time there. I was traded within a week. But it was a fun week. His reaction seems like good ol Butch. During my first game in Somerset, some players were not hustling. He put a helmet on and got a bat and went to the box to show us how we looked not hustling down the line. Stadium was packed. then he came back and said none of us had the heart to F#$% with him. lol Priceless
Hobson had a complaint. But he laid hands on an umpire when the umpire tried to stop him from pullng the bag. He should have been suspended right there and then
butch hobson is one of the most legit coaches a baseball player could hope for. hes funny as hell too, his son kc was on my high school team and he helped coach us. we called him zeus because of his white hair haha
You know what, tip of the cap to Butch Hobson. Went out and pleaded his point that the first base umpire should not ask for help unless obstruction of view. Therefore, he was being a good manager. And how about making some kid's day and provide some entertainment to a baseball game? The kid got the base after the game. Managers arguing is part of the game, of course this isn't the right way to handle it, but this video put a smile on my face. Have a good one.
The first manager challenged the play the way it should be. He remained calm and asked the first base umpire to check with the one at home plate. Butch...not so much.
I would have gotten ran as well. If the 1st base ump can't make that call then what is the point of him even being out there. That is his call and really needs no help. Terrible...
I thought that was great..... i like when the manager shows some personality. My favorite memory of going to major league games was when tommy lasorda would come play the giants and wed boo him and hed give it right back to us blowing kisses to the giants fans and egging it on.....good fun.
The player was clearly out and then a little bitching to an umpire reversing a decision makes the other coach bitchy and then he's booted from the game. Clearly the umpire is biased and the ejected coach was too dramatic
After a coach or player is ejected from the field, he should be removed from the field. Period. This is the kind of garbage that ruins the integrity of the game. The first plate umpire appealed, and his call was over-turned by the umpire. That is the proper mechanic. He also pushed the third official, which is assault. Great example for a little kid to learn from. Maybe 10 years from now, he'll show you the bag when he beats you over the head w/ it and steals your car.
Mike Scioa (the angels manager) once said "if you're gonna get ejected, get your money's worth out of it." I'd say Butch Hobson got his money's worth out of it!
I believe that this occurred during the MiLB umpire strike. Heck I am an umpire and I could have gotten that call right. I wonder where they get these guys from.
John Hoffman is the worst announcer ever, and it seems like everyone else agrees. I was also pleased at how Vic Davilla handled the situation, and not pleased at Hobson's tirade, although it was entertaining. Boy, do I miss the North Shore Spirit.
The runner was safe. I loved it when Hobson gave the kid the bag. He should've been allowed to keep it. I'm sure the stadium had a spare bag somewhere.
Very good sportsmanship by the first coach. I am a basketball and soccer referee, plan on taking up baseball or softball after I graduate from college. I've dealt with many different kinds of coaches and parents/fans. It's funny half the stuff some of these coaches says sometime, especially when they say something that is contrary to the rules, and they know it. Anyways, great overturn on the 1st base umpire, very well controlled.
WOW SUPERB JOB BY THAT 1ST BASE UMPIRE....he took the heat from the first coach, then appeald the call when the appeal was asked. then made the call right and handeld it like a pro. THEN he took the heat from the other coach till it just got out of hand.
Butch, sit down fool. You look like a female Butch. Did you notice how Butch walks? Butch walks funny. I bet Butch is funny, he walks like a girly man. Are you a Girly Man Butch?
Hobson wasnt right. About 5-6 years ago, the emphasis was changed in umpiring. It used to be "live and die with your call", right or wrong. It was changed to "get the call right". Because sometimes we miss em. This was handled EXACTLY as its supposed to be. Make the call. Off coach comes out, states his case. Now, if there is "doubt" in our mind, we might get help. If we are 100% sure we dont. Here, obviously, umpire probably knew he missed something, so he gets help. Call changed, play on.
Also..Yes, on a rare occasion the umpire can go to his partner, and ask for help, without solicitation from the coach. But thats not the way its done. You can agree or not. From the majors on down, if you get request to get help, its up to you. If your sure, you dont. Doubt, you do. Just the way it is. Trust me, there will be a time when Hobson will go out, because of a call, and ask the umpire to get help. Shouldnt the umpires try to get it right for him also? If thats the case?
He didn't go to his partner to ask for help. He went AFTER Davilla protested and asked him to check with plate umpire. If he thought he needed help, he didn't heed to wait for the coach to come and point it out to him did he?
Did you notice that the first coach came out and talked semi-respectful? He got the call. Did you notice that the second didn't and got tossed? Heres a lesson to you people who don't umpire. If you want an umpire to listen to you, PIPE DOWN! Talk to him with respect and he WILL respect you and try to get the call right. If you come out heollering at him, he really won't want to waste his time with you.
He doesn't know what's going on. He stumbles. He's got a terrible voice. It's not fluent-There's far too much dead air. He doesn't know the rules, has obviously never umpired.
" I'm gonna give ya a lot da cap, da cap"
As both a broadcaster and an umpire, he needs work.
Every time I watch this, it gets funnier. I think he was out, looks like the guy's foot was way off the bag. Butch is setting a bad example of sportsmanship for the kids with his tantrum, but you can't help laughing when he takes the time to walk all the way up the stairs to hand the bag off to someone. Who wound up winning??
They got it right so congrats for that but what's up with the non-matching unmdershirts? The third base ump has a white tee underneath and the first base ump has a dark blue mock neck. Proper appearance buys you some credibility
ALL coaches when a call goes against them come out and argue, and sometimes want the umpire to "get help".
