...does anyone outside of the US really care about the Oscars? I doubt it...it's become a bit of a farce. The best movies now are all foreign titles. 2011 was one of the most depressing years for US movies...I liked 'The Artist' and hope it wins.
@blurayffan66 - I think some people do, particularly in English-speaking countries...the problem is, the Academy puffs their chest out every year and makes so much noise it's nearly impossible to ignore.
If I had to pick a nominee to take the prize, I might go with Moneyball. Though it would be cool if The Tree of Life got it.
As for the snubs: I recently saw The Skin I Live In. It's fucked up, but I liked it, sort of the psychological equivalent of what I expect The Human Centipede is (haven't actually seen Centipede).
Didn't really expect her to get nominated, but I thought Elle Fanning's performance in Super 8 was some of the best acting I saw all year. Especially that scene on the platform, right before the train crash.
50/50 was excellent as well.
Just watched the trailer for Love Stalker, it looks great!
@filmdumb - Elle Fanning...most adorable zombie ever. I liked Levitt and Rogen in 50/50...Kendrick and Howard, not so much (but I blame the way their characters were written).
I'm very proud of my friends for having completed their movie and giving us Chicagoans a chance to see it on the big screen!
Oh my god, I completely agree about Extremely Loud. I had zero interest in seeing that even before I started reading a lot of the terrible reviews. I actually haven't seen ANY of the Best Picture noms yet, but I will probably get around to seeing them all except for Extremely Loud. I honestly don't think The Help looks very good either, but I'm sure I'll eventually watch it if for no other reason than Emma Stone.
Agreed only film I particularly enjoyed this year was tinker (even though I thought it was going to be better than it was), still need to see Drive, no idea why that wasn't nominated seemed to be critically acclaimed more do than other films that have got the nod.
Thought benedict cumberbatch deserved a supporting nom for tinker, probably more than bloody Jonah hill.
@CineRam oh and if you're interested, empire has a list of oscar injustices for 2012 which i am not able to link you to for some unknown reason (error message) but it's on the main page of empireonline . com, found it a good read!
I'm content with Hugo, Moneyball, Midnight in Paris, and Tree of Life(ambitious at the very least). War Horse(zzzzz), The Descendants(lesser Alexander Payne work), The Artist(more admirable than enjoyable, thin story), Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close(they sure do love Stephen Daldry), and The Help(not my thing). They didn't do any movies favors that weren't already largely studio films with plenty of promotion. Sadly I won't be able to see Love Stalker.
@TheMovieRewind - Yeah, truly independent movies don't stand a chance unless they have well-known actors and are released through a studio-sub branch. Thanks for watching...you can order the DVD online now!
I'm content with Hugo, Moneyball, ?Tree of Life, and Midnight in Paris. War Horse(zzzzz), Descendants(really lesser Alexander Payne work), The Artist(more admirable than enjoyable, pleasant), The Help(probably not my thing), Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close(they sure do have a thing for Daldry). Very boring and conservative year for the Academy. No point in 9 if all it does it help mostly big studio pictures that have enough promotion. Sadly I won't be able to Love Stalker.
