Beautiful. :) I never thought of them as BUFFs. I thought of them as gorgeous (and NOISEY) heavyweight sailplanes ---that just happened to have engines. But then, I started my flying in sailplanes, so that long wingspan really was a hit with me. And yes, btw, they really do have "training wheels" near the wingtips to keep them from dragging the ground under full fuel...and they really do take off and land in "backwards" configuration.
When I was in SAC, there was a revivalry between bombers & missles. You should see what it is like to be on a missile site, and get "buzzed" by a B-52, or B-1. They can scare the crap out of you.
I've always wondered why we spent all that money on the B-2. We just needed to build some more B-52s. The original cost was $45 million each. The B-1 costs $250 million and the B-2 costs $1700 million.
@rickcain2320 Because reality is the B-52 wouldn't have gotten past modern SAM and Soviet Fighters in The Soviet Union....Fighters don't have the fuel to escort them the entire way.
I've always known it's a big plane, I've even seen it at a couple of airshows but I never really appreciated how ridiculously long it's wings are until 0:30 in this clip.
The smoke from the engines is due to water injection; used to increase fuel efficiency, a lot of the old turbojet engines (KC-135A, RC-135, etc.) also used water injection systems, which is why they smoked so bad.
@shawnp62 I may stand corrected but I dont think the H-model had water injecton. IF it did, it would not have been operating during this video. The water inj was to increase takeoff power only. All the water would be consumed at that time. The TF-33's were smokey all the time, just an old design! Godspeed to them, beautiful screaming glory!
@Earssss I think you're right. I remember one being diverted to Dyess when I was there and when it taxied in, the tip gear were a few feet off the ground. Once we refueled it, they touched the ground and compressed quite a bit.
@77bubba00 ,, ya that is what i can remember from the crew chief when i was young n use to play on them all day,, ,the wings made a good place to run on for a kid hahaah
Kind of lame, 3 days ago, I was at lunch and one of these burst out of cloud cover barely 150 ft off the ground, and it had shit going all around it. IT WAS SO COOL.
Beautiful! I wonder, does the tail smoke has anything to do with these engines are build to run at that high altitude? I mean on that altitude the air are much thinner than on the ground..? Any expert?
@seenfromsweden The smoke has nothing to do with being built for high altitude operation really. It's just unburned hydrocarbons (fuel). Because the basic design of the Pratt & Whitney TF33-103 engine is over 50 years old, therefore they're not the cleanest burning engines around... But they look awesome, and sound bad ass, so I wouldn't have it any other way!
@LateNightCable The BUFF rocks my world, here in Australia, they have been around in the past flying over the Grand Prix, ever year I went to see it ,the 52 was either recalled, cancelled due to poor weather, or off bombing the shit outta the bad guys, 23 years and still counting till I get to see one and cream my pants. LONG LIVE THE BUFF!!
@dirac33 Water injection was utilized only on models equipped with J57 turbojets (B-52G and before), and only for takeoff power. The B-52H, like in the video, was the only model equipped with the newer, more advanced turbofan engines. And never had water injection, because the more powerful engines deemed it unnecessary.
@LateNightCable Troll? Just because I correct you, you start name calling. LOL. As far as acting smart, it sounds like you have confidence issues in yourself. Hell information is free these days, it doesn't take much to Wiki something(you get the point). People who know me, know I don't have to ACT anyway. @l8fbb23451 ... ground effect is = to the length of one wing high off the ground ,,, so my pick would be no he is not ... i can not measure it from here lol
@dodoslovensko Max range is around 14000km, Fuel tank capacity around 312,179 pounds which converts roughly to 46000 gallons. 3.2 gallons per kilometer. kilometer= 3280 feet.
@morepower2k maybe i read the wrong number. I read the gallons in the tank and the range or something then did some math. but the other number (combat range) was waaayyy smaller so yah I don't know.
@dodoslovensko I remember calculating this once, in a flight simulator. it's several gallons per mile, don't remember how many. a couple thousand feet per/gallon. lol
@Naoko1960 Actually, it has nothing to do with the octane. Water injection cools the engines so they can operate at a higher power setting and not overtemp them. I flew 747-100's that had water injection and the engines were the JT-9D 7A engines. These were turbofan engines.
The sound of the B52 is unmistakable, majestic and one of its kind; that blend of roaring power and hi pitch hiss is simply amazing. I had the luck to see this monster just a couple of times in my life while taking off from Aviano USAF airbase in northern Italy; hope to see it again.
The PW TF-33 on the "H" does not use water augmentation. The J-57 on the "G" did. This flyby was about ten years ago; speed was approx. 280 knots (110 knots below Vmo); throttles were @ 85% (110% is max power).
That black stuff you see coming from those 8 engines is actually from the B-52's water injection system. At high thrust settings the B-52 actually injects water into the fuel/air mixture. Google B-52 water injection.

The cloud over the wings is a common physical phenomenon. It's due to low pressure that causes localized low air temperature, condensing atmospheric water vapor into visible water droplets. You'll notice it starts at 0:18 when the B-52 loads on some G and begins climbing. You'll also see it if you fly on a moist day on most airliners just after takeoff.
@dpimpchris The term for what you're calling "a white cloud strip" is "contrail." All piston- and jet-engined aircraft can form them, depending on altitude, temperature, and moisture content of the air.
When I was in the Air Force, I took my Dad to see the B52's at the base I was stationed at. There happened to be three taking off for a training flight at the time. I remember it was the only time I ever heard my Dad say "holy fuck". That was a great day for him, and me too.

When I was in the Air Force, I took my Dad to see the B52's at the base I was stationed at. There happened to be three taking off for a training flight at the time. I remember it was the only time I ever heard my Dad say "holy fuck". That was a great day for him, and me too.
