  • ohh fuck, this is going to be so hard, they´re so many fucking chords, and some of them are not even chords...

  • I lost it at "Getting all hip" and couldn't keep going for the next 10 minutes because of little laughter attacks.

  • OMGG i just transcribed my firstt song:DD than i checked the tabs and i was 100% right!!! thank you for this wonderful feeling of achievement

  • @kaanhan10 so u boast to a bunch of strangers???

  • @joshlenihan2k11 He is thanking Justin, not boasting to us...

  • learning the bass note helps a ton also knowing the names of the notes help too even if its just on the E and A string cuz power chord wise u can play any power chord just on those 2 strings cuz say the song uses E, D, and A chords well if u figure out the chords on those strings and then learn the rest of the notes u will be like "well instead of playin the D and A chords way down here ill just play em up here where its easier" believe me it works

  • justin, you're great

    =)

  • are there any videos which display a good example of a good transcriber?

  • I tried to transcribe Master of Puppets and I couldn't get it so I just assumed that I was shit at guitar and then I set my guitar on fire and smashed it to bits.

  • @bergalini you kinda missed the part where he start with something easy huh?

  • @CKS5000 I was making a joke dude.

  • what if the guitar in the song is tuned differently???

  • @samlohani just practice on transcribing. With enough experience, you'll recognize alternative tunings right away. I've learned to play guitar by ear since the very start, mainly because I don't know how to read tabs and notes lol. And I can testify to the power of playing by ear. You can do things many guitarists who read tabs cant. Just keep at it and you'll reap the rewards after. :-)

  • @samlohani then your screwed hahaha

  • Thumbs up for the tasmanian devil at the end!!!!!

  • Hi Justin. Great lesson but I have some doubts.. How do you recommend doing it? In a tab paper or in a manuscript? Doing in a manuscript requires the knowledge of music notation right ? Please answer me. Thank you.

  • ..i mean, of course it's easy to know wether it's a descending or ascending pattern, but what's hard is if the notes are arranged diiferently.....for example in a major scale..how would you know that it is a 1-3-5-4-5 and not a 1-4-5-3-5 if it's played extremely fast....

  • @tabotabojayar so what i'm trying to point out is the notes in between a wider pattern...

  • hey ahhmmm. i've watched your video named most important guitar lesson.....which is about transcribing a song too...well i have a question, cause transcribing chords and riffs are really easy, but my problem is transcribing fast phrases...i've been collecting licks and practicing some scales since i went through lead guitar plying and i can also determine what scale am i hearing, my question is how the hell could someone transcribe the exact pattern!

  • The problem is that there are just so damn many chords, trying to randomly guess which one chord of so many possibilities is literally like searching for a needle in a haystack. I think you've found your one person who can't do this at all...

  • @BandwannaMcGunner

im trying to tab songs for a week now.

it takes time i think when youre not that experienced. my progres isnt that good.

but i think you can hear the difference of a e- , E- and e5 chord for example...

your ear will get better if you do more, i suppose. lets see how good i am in 3 months :D

  • you justin could tell how use transcribe software

  • ok so do you mean we should do ear training or transcribing? i thought they went hand in hand; arent they like the same thing??

do you suggest this method or do you think its better to first do interval training etc. and full ear training like solfege methods and then do this?

  • Yea!...I figured it out...there is a program that u can use online and don't even have to download it...it is Zamzar...just go there, it lets u put in URL and then sends the converted video/audio MP4 file to your email and then u download it and it is saved in ur C drive...find this and open it with Transcribe program and YES!...u have the video and audio at ur disposal to slow down and learn!

  • Since Tubesock went down, I have not been able to figure out how to get Youtube videos to my Transcribe program. I was wonderful and easy to use Trancribe but now I am so so frustrated...does anyone know something that actually works?....I've tried tons of conversion programs but none would let me take a youtube URL and sent it in a mpeg form to my hard drive to use with Transcribe.

  • LOL "Freaky Guy".

  • what if the song is in a different tuning? How Would you be able to figure the tunings out? Thanks.

  • @DelornificatioN I never really watched all of the video thats why i posted that. thanks alot

  • The transcribed audio is freaking hilarious, hahahah good lesson man!

  • Hey this is how i worked out nightrain......it was friggin hard, but in the end i found it.

  • i transcribed only one chord right when i tried to transcribe a song(it has 3 chords)

    this is so frustrating ..

  • There is a free software called Audacity that you can use to transcribe. It is... similar to Transcribe but it does not cost anything so maybe its a good place to start... Enjoy!

  • I like your shirt, it goes to 11! And thanks for the tips!

  • should you know a whole bunch of chords before you start transcribing?

  • @bgand3lla Well I know a whole bunch of chords but I cant tell the difference between them. So I would say dont do that. Start with just three. Plenty songs with C, G and D. I feel like getting an ear for music is like a key going click! Once it happens it will make learning the rest of the chords a more pleaureable experience. I dunno... Im always frustrated not knowing what Im really playing so maybe its a good idea to get the ear first..

  • thanks alot

  • wtf is a bass note never heard it metioned before

  • @dantedaraciestbadger Its the same as the route note

  • I've been doing this transcribe thing ever since I learned slash didn't use tabs. It's working. This vid made me laugh and was easy to follow, however I knew most of the info. Thanks Justin! 5 stars!

  • Hey justin, what are some songs you recommend trancribing to beginners? Anythings fine, I was just wondering if you had some that would have someone start on. I tried George Benson's solo Red Clay as my first.... didn't work out so well haha. Thanks Justin, you rock!!!!!!!

  • @machinsky108 if u know power chords, gonna go far kid by offspring, self esteem by offspring. if ur looking for open chords, it mite sound weird but disney songs by artists like miley cyrus, jonas brothers, and artists like taylor swift have pretty straight forward progresssions.

  • "some freaky guy" love it! really useful vid, thanks

  • he's definitely right. as a beginner, it's incredibly hard to do. it takes forever and can be frustrating but once i get it, i'm always so excited and proud that i really figured it out by ear!

  • fantastic tips JS love it, thanks a LOT.

  • Good

  • WHERE DID JUSTIN GET THAT SHIRT??? :P

  • Chords are everything you learn the chords the you know the key if you know the key you can see what scale the guitarist is using and you can work out the solo :)

  • Thank you very much. I'm going to begin transcribing all the songs I want to learn from now on. I'll look up stuff that is too hard but for the most part I will grind it out and learn some basic songs. I really like Nirvana and find their songs relatively easy to play so I will work on those then go from there.

  • dude do u have any advice for say songs with a majority note rhythm rather than like chords ??

an do u find it still works on say rock songs like distorted ??

  • great video justin, but i'm working on transcribing leads, i find it easier to transcribe single notes, for example a riff, than a chord progression :/ any tips for that?

  • I have the same problem. You have to hear the intervals of the chords: if it's root positioned chords or inverted chords, sevenths and ninths, etc.

Try to play arpeggios (chords one note at a time) as practice and overall: practice.

  • Windows Media Player actually has a slowdown feature too. Just click on 'Play' on the menu bar, where the 'File', 'View', 'Help' and 'Tools' button can be found, then click 'Play Speed' -> 'Slow' or you can just press CTRL+Shift+S to slow it down and CTRL+Shift+N to change it back to normal.

  • I dont know if this has been posted yet but for those who don't want to pay for transcribe there's the plugin for winamp called pacemaker that has the slowdown feature and the remove vocals feature that more intuitive IMO. Transcribing is hard but I think its fun at the same time because you kinda see how simple the coolest riffs are.

  • Another hint in transcribing songs, is the vocalist's voice, it helps you identify the key of the song through the notes that they sing especially if you're making an instrumental version of the song.

  • completely agree. in fact that's the first thing I'd do.

  • Ummmm, i must be a one of those freaky guy's who can just do it. the first thing i figured out by ear is a Jimi Hendrix solo. I only missed one note.

  • Some people can do that more easy than others. However, a dose of humbleness on your behalf would...

  • Would?

  • ummmm, make your comment more relevant, and not uselessly exclusive?

  • @cedar688 - Hope your guitar playing is going well.

  • lol idiot

  • Im about 12 years.. if somone in my class see this video, they will say : Arrhg! waste of time! but this was for me, really really really interesting stuff! Thank you very much!

  • "I can't do it, I'm shit at guitar" LOL!!!!

  • @BabyButtSmell As long as you keep trying you will get it...trust me I went through that too I thought I was horrible.

  • @rjb094 oh sorry i didnt watch the video until after that comment.....i thought you were being serious LOL

  • @BabyButtSmell hahaha, xD

  • @BabyButtSmell haha i know i kept watchin that part

  • @BabyButtSmell so was everyone that ever picked up a guitar..pick that thing up and play it to ur fingers bleed man!! gotta pay dues some were...

  • Thank you very much, i wish i had you as music teachers like you when i was in GCSE.

  • Spend about an hour on the first minute of House of the rising sun! I got it in the end though, but yer right! It's hard:D rewinding every 3 seconds:P

And this was when I did know what chords are used in the song! Can't imagine how long this would have taken without it. Oh well, live and learn!

    Peace!

  • all i can say it that i was very distracted by his accent. i loved it! jk haha thanks

  • wont you have to know all the chords to start transcribing ?

  • You are the best :))))))

  • thanks man. ive tried it with the first verse of wish you were here. it worked great ,thanks man

  • you are by FAR the best online teacher I have ever seen, keep up the great work!

  • whats the song he said?

  • "better be home soon" by Crowded House. Really good Australian band (technically from New Zealand, but we Australians don't like to admit that... haha)

  • lol your the best teacher, i feel it isnt a video but your talking to me xD

btw might have been a good idea to include circle of fifths which is massively good for learning the slightly "older" rock songs

  • sorry if it sounds like i ignored everything he just said, but should i start transcribing when i know the basic chords, (A, C, D, E, G and some others) but not many others. just cause i know if i dont know many of the chords then i will definatly get stuck more. so i would then have to learn more chords then get transcribing. just wondering so i can get transcribing as fast as i can.

  • search for the "circle of fifths". Usually a song is written in a certain scale. This scale have a limited number of chords you can play it with. For example scale C has chords C Dm E(7) F G(7) Am Bdim. So if you found out that your song has a C and an Am chords in it, then it is probably a song written in C scale and you can try out Dm E F G etc.

    Hope this helped a bit.

  • i kind of get you, ive learnt alot more chords, so transcribing will be easier. i took what you said as, from figuring out certain chords in the song, you can figure most of the rst out by using other chords that will most of the time be accompanied with them in the song. i think thats rightish...i think its a little advanced for me now, but when i get better at it, ill take it into stride.

  • @osnek77 the circle of fifths...what a conundrum!!!

  • @osnek77 the circle of fifths...what a conundrum!!!

  • @osnek77 It's Em in the Key of C, not E7. That being said, I am a big fan of putting in random 7th chords where they don't belong :)

  • @osnek77 there is no e7 in the key of c. there is only one natural dominant chord in a key and it's the 5th chord when extended. the e would extend to an E minor 7th

  • @osnek77 o so the circle of fiths is a transcribing tool?

  • thanks a lot.......

  • You really are a great man and guitarist. I hope one of us YouTube students will become a famous guitarist and repay you, I know I will.

  • Great lesson, better shirt!

  • tnx so much man.. i love this vid... it inspires me man... 5/5..

  • can u anyone give me some simple songs to figure out? thanks

  • I really want to thank you for this lesson, you dont know how much this was needed in my growing as a player.

    I never really listened

  • Try listening to Muddy Waters, Champagne and reefer, haha but nice song to learn.

  • dont like freaky guys =)

  • ive started transcribing 'godfather theme-slash version...its actually alri to try nd play:D

  • hey, should you transcribe solos too, even if your a begginer transcriber ? if yes, can you recommend some easy solos ? i tried Pink Floyd - Time solo, but the Gilmour bends are crazy:)

  • yes you should! BB king solos are a good place to start. Try blue boy's tune on you tube. You can see him playing too.. kinda helps. U gotta enjoy the music ur transcribing though. Hope u like them blues ^^

  • thanks man

  • fyi sweet spinal tap shirt :)

  • i can nail the root note eay but trying to get thechord is reeaal hard

  • Please don't spam. He's teaching how to transcribe by ear. If you can already do it then you don't need to watch this or comment.

  • yeah, what oregonskateok said.

  • thanx justin...these lessons really help alot!!! they are truly appreciated by ppl who cant afford it...i had to get a hand-me-down guitar cause i could even afford that

  • "Occasionally you'll get a freaky guy who can just listen to stuff and play it" ... LOL. I think that's what everyone wants to be :)

I just started playing and transcribing works ... believe me.

  • Very helpful and inspiring. I've been watching videos on YouTube of songs I like and I can see how the person plays it and even though it's fuzzy and bad resolution and then I try to find the right chord. Usually I can just see the general place his fingers are and figure it out from there, but tomorrow after I restring my guitar (1 popped tonight and I don't have any spares), I'm gonna listen to one and do my best to figure it out. You're awesome and I hope you had a merry Christmas!!

    Jason

  • how can you transcribe songs if you don't know what tuning their in?

  • transcribe the tune =/

  • lol i love that shirt.. lol "it goes to eleven" spinal tap

  • @cobraman115 What is the shirt about? I still did not figured it ? :)

  • @emironline there is a movie called this is spinal tap. type in spinal tap eleven on youtube you should get it then. If not....its an amplifier knob at 11

  • lets start on buckethead :)

  • CAn someone please tell me a good song to start with???

  • you should try the song horse with no name, its the easiest and the first song i learned on my own

  • ahh i cant do it im shit at guitar haha :)

  • So i just started to do some transcribing, mainly on a few old Blue Cheer songs that I cant find tabs for (I plan to get a few old Robin Trower songs in as well), and I picked up that Transcribe program you talked about, I started to play with it and literally said "holy shit"...

Mainly for the karaoke effect, kinda muting out the vocals, or lessening them a great deal, which helps me a TON!

Most of the time I cant scribe due to the vocals being too loud!

    Thanks for the help m8!!!!!!

  • but this one goes to eleven! awesome shirt

  • @wowitsa what is the shirt about?

  • thanks for all your videos your GREAT!!

  • Once again, yer the best. And I'm getting better, *squee*!!

  • wheres the solo transcribing tips???

  • ur lesson are great

but i play sax and i can transcribe really well on that but i have truble with guitar

    i dont get that!!

  • hey justin can you show some lessons about arpeggios... please...

  • use a program called twelve keys. it's really good

  • justin, wheresd the vidoe u tell us the coards but in the wrong order???????????????????

  • its on his site

  • You have an amazing talent for teaching. Thank you. I'm quite an experienced player but I watch your videos to help me teach. Thanks a million1!

  • rhymes of the times ftw

  • thanks.

    your lesson is really helpful.

i've been transcribing for years now but you've help me strengthen my transcribing foundation by giving these tips.

  • what is transcibing

  • what he's been talking about

  • transcribe = writting to paper what you hear

scribe = write tran or transfer

transfer what you hear to paper

  • thanks a lot for your help.

  • waiting for the advanced transcribe lesson

  • good to see u have maiden on ur list UP THE IRONS!!!

  • Jesus this is really hard. It's no fun anymore lol ^_^;

But won't STOP! I wannna be pro :D

  • Justin can you do an advance transcribing lesson later, like on solos and such please? :)Thanks for all the lessons.

  • you're such a great help, man!! Godbless and more power!!

  • may i know where's your other youtube videos? i find your videos interesting but for me your dvd videos prices are way out of my league, unfortunately. sigh.

  • chek his website...he got them all there and in a nice order...

  • dude you are the man!

somebody should give you an award :D:D

  • If you need more info on this PLEASE check out the web site - all you need is there!!!

    J

  • justin can you show some lesson on how to use arpeggios... please.. thanks

  • Just another tip to add to Justin's brilliant video, If you know another guitarist who is very good at transcribing, or if you know a bass player who knows the song you're trying to play, then its a good idea to ask them to play it for you, because they can slow it down, and give you sound advice.

  • Thanks Justin, im 14 and im going to start TRYING to transcribe lol

    Great lesson btw =D

  • I understand what your saying, but I don't know whhere to start. Like when you hear a note you kind of roughly know where it is, like if it is a high pitched one you know it will be near the high strings. But where do you start? just go down the fretboard until something sounds right?

  • Here's a method I find helpful. Play a scale, do,re,me,...,etc. Most of the notes of the tune will fit the scale, with perhaps some accidental (sharps & flats). Get a hold of the sheet music for the tune, and find what degree of the scale the tune begins on...the starting note. Many tunes start on the fifth. Then explore the scale notes for the second note of the tune. Work it from there - one note at a time. The last note of the tune will be the 1st note of the scale, in most cases.Good Luck!

  • Some people can naturally learn by ear better than by tabs. This really helps all of us who don't have that magic power; =P

I can't wait for the next part to this...

  • thanks man ur lessons are emazing and rlly helpful.

  • Thanks Justin, very helpful as usual! BTW you have a Fender headstock mohican! :-)

  • LOVE the "These go to 11" shirt ;)

  • XD

    sh*t happens ;D

  • Justin,

Do I need to get a guitar tutor? Your the best man, totally relate your style and honesty. Thanks

    Phil

  • that thing scared me at the end lol

  • You should get some award or something for this ! You are absoulutley amazing ! Thank you so much ! I wish i had more money so I could donate some to your website !

  • wahaha, nice rodent.

  • Great Tips

May i reccomend that when u listen to the tracks that you mess around with the EQ of the Speakers so you can get rid of any unwanted noise from any other instruments in the song.

    Cheers

  • i dont get ur shirt lol

  • Up to 11. Spinal Tap
