@bombinandfreerunnin that is exactly my point. Tenors usually sing this a minor third higher than an octave lower than the original pitch. The highest note Bostridge sings here is an E2 and tenors prefer the version where the highest note is either an F2 or a G2. This version is only an octave transposition from the original alto castrato version which is what countertenors and mezzos sing today. Wrong for Ian, coz he sounds low and it would have been better for him the tenor version. OKKKK??
@amatorynumber Actually, you meant E4. Also, F major is the original key...what you say is true, though: generally sopranos are the only singers who don't transpose it up or down.
@Taenyr Male altos/countertenors tend to keep it in F major, although there are many who believe it's more historically accurate to transpose the key down a half-step, since concert tuning came a few centuries after this musical era :)

way too low, why singing it an octave lower than original pitch? weird! at tenor pitch would have been better... millions have sung it so... period accuracy sometimes gets in the way of just plain beauty, sorry :-)
@BelfNelfLuv Read my comment again... YOU retard. If I had to explain it to every stupid person who fancies himself an intellectual I wouldn't have time for anything else.
@amatorynumber lol Read your comment again? You claimed this wasn't in tenor range when it most clearly is. I'm sorry your ear is so poor you let vocal timbre cloud your judgment, but that's hardly my problem, is it? You are requesting COUNTERtenor range, my dear, and doing so under the guise of being a "purist". Sorry to say, if you consider this too low, please don't run into any of the myriad baritone performances of this.
@BelfNelfLuv I am not asking poor Ian to sing in his horrible falsetto, dear, but tenors usually sing this at a higher tessitura... It is too low FOR HIM, understood??? Ian Boredomstridge tends to fancy himself a tenor, baritone and whatever there can be on earth... this is TOOO LOOOOW... (again, just in case it offwired you)... for him.
@BelfNelfLuv By the way, calling someone 'faggot' on a private message and boasting about your amazing musical knowledge does nothing to improve one's view on either your musical knowledge or plainly your humanity. You started calling me a retard, which I am not, and ended calling me a faggot, which I am, and a very proud one, mister expert. We won't hold any further discussion so don't bother. Please.
@amatorynumber Not sure I love you (well, maybe a little), but I certainly respect and admire you! Also a faggot, and also very proud, and moreover I'm a countertenor who sings this recit. and aria an octave higher than the splendid Mr. Bostridge. It's an beautiful, simple, glorious work!
@BelfNelfLuv What did you do, chap? Read that from the English Wikipedia page (id est discere, the fact that Ian Bostridge has a tenor range opposed to the aforesaid)? You are rudimentary, ostensibly, and calling people a retard? You are obviously an American because we don't use that epithet in The Isles. Post your own video and give us an example of Countertenor range, because I'm dying to know!
I was curious about Ian Bostridge, having just read a Boston Globe review of his Schubert recital here Friday night (April 3, 2009). I was unfamiliar with him, and really enjoy the postings on YouTube, although his "Ombra mai fu," while very textured, is almost too subdued, I think.
The words themselves differ considerably from Schubert's 'Lindenbaum,' but the sentiment I guess could be considered to be similar....

I agree that the tessitura here is a bit low for Mr. Bostridge, who has a thrillingly pure upper register.

Bostridge sings similar words in Schubert's "Lindenbaum"

@Spanglefeather Those lyrics are pretty different in meaning than these I think.
