I never thought I'd see a prog rock blonde fan, and really pretty, sorry couldn't help it ;) I found your description compelling and amazingly savvy. I'm also a huge fan of the Lamb and appreciate the difference between the old and new recordings. Steve's guitar sounds technically and better on the new ones, but being quite a purist myself, I think the original's atmosphere and mood can't really be reproduced due to the unique emotional process of the band when making this masterpiece
I am a indie artist as well as a keyboardist. Tony Banks is my all time fave. Hope to meet him someday and ask if i can play his solo material on my indie radio show.
@LileighWhiteLilith Hi there came across this channel by accident thanks very much for this rich information about an epic band, being a sound engineer yourself, I am sure you agree with me that Alan Parsons is a superb engineer like your self!
@rick4777 ~ Wow...being mentioned in the same sentence as the impeccable & uber-talented Alan Parsons is, in of itself, an incredible honor. Thank you, Rick !
My word that was absolutely wonderful Lileigh. I You are putting so much into all this. Your videos area joy to watch both because you are looking at my all time favourite band in their most creative period, and because your presentations are so interesting and compelling; and what's more your are a beautiful woman.
Fascinating channel - well done and applause for the dedication shown ! I had tickets for the original cancelled tour in early '75 (UK). I'll never forget the devastation I felt...as you do when you're a teenage prog fanatic :o)
Seeing him live next month again, and he's producing music today which IMO is as good as he has ever done as a solo artist.
By the way, have you seen The Musical Box tribute band performing TLLDOB? Amazing is the only word.
@jimguitarfan ~ Hi, Jim ! Yes, that cancellation (of seeing the REAL LLDOB) must be a very disappointing stab of memory for you, to this day, I would imagine. Coming "this" close to seeing what is now considered one of the rarest historic, early multi-media Prog concerts of all time!
I'm so glad you asked about The Musical Box, too.
Yes, I was able to see their superlative recapitulation of the LLDOB - 8 times, last Fall...in order to film them for my new YT series: "Analysis:The Musical Box"
@jimguitarfan ~ In fact, I am (as I type) editing down a great 4-vid line-up of a great "behind the scenes of TMB" - of their collection of historic vintage instruments ala Genesis 74/75 - during the Lamb (that Sebastien Lamothe & Serge Morrissette painstakingly assembled for its original touring, back in 2000). To be uploaded soon to YouTube. Meanwhile, please check out the 1st half of my Analysis: TMB vids (and all my Genesis "Analysis" vids) on my new website - LileighWhite(dot)com! ;-)
Thank you so much for this, great analysis. Can't believe I found someone who loves the Lamb album more than I do. Steve Hackett is one of the greats. Never seen The Musical Box, but I did see a CB 20 years ago called "Over the Garden Wall", which were great. Thanks again.
@sturoc0 ~ I apologize for not being able to offer a direct line for these older productions. As a pro audio engineer - it pained me to NOT be able to use my production team or any of my delectable Sennheiser wireless lav mics, when I recorded these vids. Truth be told, I was forced to utilize a FlipVideo camera during the taping of them, last year...(whose corporate design engineers neglected to include an INPUT JACK for use in routing audio in ANY of their video products.) So sorry, honey!
@LileighWhiteLilith That was the fastest reply I have ever seen on You Tube. Thank you Lileigh for this.I do like your analysis' and hope you can do more of other progressive rock groups as well ? It would really take off especially for fans of sites like ProgArchives, not an intentional plug but more of have you heard of this site ?
Keep up the good work and get those other engineers off their butts to give ya some proper production audio !!!
@sturoc0 ~ I LOVE ProgArchives, Sturco...and, indeed, tapped into its deep labrynth-like informational coffers once my initial (totally unintentional) Analysis videos went viral throughout the European Genesis fan communities, 15 months ago. Great site for all those who fantasize about the entire world somehow, someday realizing how MAGNIFICENT Prog music really is (compared to most of the corporate over-marketed, under-talented schlock we are force-fed on a daily basis)! *Lol* ;-) xoxo Lil
@jsilence418 ~ Come the New Year...I will continue to upgrade the musical portions of all my Analysis series vids by steadily replacing what you hear over my studio's JBL speakers with supporting non-linear audio clips (direct from the CD's, themselves.) It takes a massive amount of time (as well as a chitload of tiny, carefully-edited aligned samples) to do - but, that should enhance the experience & quell the mild complaints about these vids I shot, last year. So sorry for the wait! xo Lil

@audiotrax2000 ~ you are MOST welcome, AT2000...so glad that I am still able to spread some of that famous Hackett "magical guitar" joy to the early Genesis-loving world. ;-)
¿podria alguien subtitularlo al español? es formidable ver a una mujer como goza al escuchar a genesis, pero me gustaria entender lo que dice, gracias de antemano a quien lo haga,si me avisa a mi correo se lo agradeceria
Props to you, Miss LileighWhiteLilith for your expertise and for avidly supporting one of the best bands of all time (regardless of genre) and my favorite band. I saw Gabriel and Hackett in the late 80's and also with Genesis themselves a few times. Thanks, for the inspiration from you and others like you this may persuade Genesis to think about a reunion. Now I got to get me that new Genesis record.
So good that you did this clip about Steve and that he corresponded. I've been learning classical guitar off and on for a couple of years now and so couldn't resist the temptation to tackle 'Horizons' off the Foxtrot album. It's difficult! But it gives a great deal of insight and respect for the man who as you rightly say is a gentleman surrounded by industry carnivores!
Just stumbled upon this series and I must say I'm very impressed with the in-depth focus you're giving the material. I wish there was as an enthusiastic analysis of the RUSH catalog.
Thanks for the reply and acceptance. EVERYONE has an opinion about this subject and sometimes, I think emotion gets in the way objectivity. But that's to be expected from "fans". I know you are a BIG fan as well but, I think your professionalism allows you to be more objective than the masses.
@slaphead99uk ~ LOL !! I appreciate the offer, Slap...you're a doll. I have a sneaking suspicion that it was Steve's ex-wife Kim...taking it out on me...after hearing of the news of Steve & his new wife Jo (a wondrously warm woman..who's mom to the other extremely talented guitarist in Steve's group - Amanda Lehmann) getting married!
Hey, they say all's fair in Love and War ..and acts of passive aggression, eh? *chortle, snort*
Thank you kindly for sharing the details/mixing of redoing certain tracks on that great Archives box set, which came out many moons ago. Agree with how it was inevitable to re-record some of those buried and flawed live tracks. Although the original vibe is never quite recaptured, Steve does a fantastic job in regards to coming quite close to the naked eye.
Cheers to your "passionate professional" review. ;-)
I love your analysis. You are "spot on" as they say. That said, I'm going to ask the "Dangerous" question. Would you mind comparing and contrasting the live recordings of Steve vs. Darryl on some the Genesis Classics? "Firth of Fifth" ect.?
@JFoxman ~ Ooo-hoo-hoo-hoo! JFox..don't you care about my lovely LiLeighWhite skin? LOL Would you really want me to risk having it FLAYED from my innocent, analysis-giving body? *peels of laughter* That is as dangerously close as you can come to the age-old "Collins vs. Gabriel" debate. NITRO vs Glycerin, babyyyy!!!
Seriously, I'd love to compare. I have accordant respect for Darryl. He is an amazing technician. But, Steve? He is an artist's artist. To create AND originate = true genius
@LileighWhiteLilith ~ Why do you think I would ask ONLY YOU that question? With your obviously vast knowledge and enthusiasm, I don't know of anyone who do a fairer comparison. I'm not asking you choose which is better. THAT's unfair to both. What I am asking for is someone who doesn't have a built in bias to compare and contrast these two guitarist.
@JFoxman ~ Mmmmm. *nod of head, in acquiescence* I will take that combined compliment & gauntlet (thrown at my stiletto-wearing feet *irreverent chortle*) and hold your request for the day when I am back within reach of a recording studio ....(for I am currently caring for a gravely ill, elderly mother - near the Canadian border).
I will also try to engage the experience of a gifted guitarist to piggyback the commentary..with some technical insights, ok?
Thanks for the reply and acknowledgement, keep doing what you do. You're a pleasure to view and listen to Lileigh and I hope you can expand your offering into new areas as you exhaust this topic.
Thanks Lileigh! I am indeed sharing these vids on my FB page , the "Steve Hackett Appreciation Page." I believe you know me better in the FB world as Michael "Poppy" Scholes. I am, of course, giving you full credit and website info!! I love your work!! Thanks for all the great insight. You're great!! Mike
@HackettSociety Hi, Poppy! Yes! Now I see why I've experienced such a wondrous "uptick" in new subscribers...thnx to your sharing of my "Analysis" vids with all your fellow Steve Hackett aficionados. ;-)
My sincere appreciation to both you and them ...for sending on such glowing and supportive comments.
I hope that you will send all those who also love "The Lamb", "Supper's Ready" & "Cinema Show" to my new website: LiLeighWhite(dot)com - which serves as the Home for all my Analysis vids!
@HackettSociety - I've been working very hard on it...since so many of my subscribers have reported having a difficult time navigating through YouTube (albeit, somewhat haphazardly) to view all of the individual Analysis vids, together.
Steve always takes a (deserved) front seat in my vids...not only because of his extraordinary technical & artistic contributions to the early Genesis sound..but, because he & Nick Davis were my main informational correspondents. Both, true gentlemen. xoxo Leigh
it seems most women don't go much for progressive rock...(a real shame) ...so it's very refreshing to see that you are really into this stuff....how did you get interested in genesis , I've been a fan since '73 myself... and why the lack of interest by most women....just curious....i just recently purchased the 1970-1975 remastered box set and was blown away by the improved stereo mix and the 5.1 audio ....keep up the good work...{:)
@axsisofevil ~ hi, Axis! I love Progressive Rock (and complex layered melodies/counter melodies..along with musical composition set in a Minor Key). I thank you for your lovely compliments..and enjoyment of my Genesis vids. I was introduced to Peter Gabriel and Genesis..when my high school boyfriend gave me a copy of Nursery Cryme. I was hooked ever since! I just don't get how other women don't get swept away by such lyrics as "Brush back your hair..and let me get to know your face/flesh!"
@spewgilist ~ why thank you, spewgilist. I think I would be happy to talk about Genesis & Gabriel just about all day...so that would make a least 2 very content people, in this world, if I could make that a reality! *grin*
@WakefieldTrin ~ I so agree, Wake. *equally downtrodden look* There is such a "3 Sirens" seductive quality to his elongated, amplifier-assisted held notes. Powerfully yearning...and "come hither" - to match Gabriel's sexually-charged lyrics... *sigh, close of eyes*
@LileighWhiteLilith I once asked him about it and he said he'd consider it and furthered that he'd always felt that it was the most beautiful track on the album. I wish he'd use those flute like guitar sounds again, :( I think 'The Fundamentals of Brainwashing' was the last time he flirted with the sound. These days he likes to stick to many volts up his Fernandes!
@synsei1 ~ There is no known FULL version of The (original) Lamb, Sensei... There are, however, several assemblages of the partial clips of various performances of it (which have been edited together) - in order to approximate the feeling of what it must have been like. TommyGunVideo offers a DVD like this...but, it costs $.
@synsei1 ~ Negative, senei1....and that fact alone is enough to kill my soul (and I bet most everyone else who takes the time to watch these vids of mine *sad look*)
No prob, Vc. I think alot of us had that same erroneous impression (about Eno). I've also read the group themselves worked in round-the-clock shifts (of 2 or 3-man teams) to do the mixing, at Island, to get the album produced in time for its launch date. Phil said that each successive team un-did the previous one's work. LOL Unfortunately, I agree, Steve's exemplary work really suffered in the resultant mixing chaos. Nick Davis has worked hard to remedy this in the collector editions.
@LileighWhiteLilith ... thanks for the info ... I had been under the impression Eno did the mix. I just googled it and apparently John Burns was the producer... no engineer listed ... so I guess we have him to blame. Sorry for the bad grammar and spelling in my post, I was probably up late and sleep deprived when I wrote it. Ciao Lilith !
This is great. I hope they upped him in the mix in alot of other section of the album remix too, because Eno really F'ed up the original mix of the album with Steve way down in the mix in some cases.
@videocanone - in most all the later collector editions, Steve's work has been (appropriately) adjusted upward, thank god. Oh, btw, Tony & Phil have publicly stated that Eno contributed very little to the Lamb album - he did NOT produce or mix. Eno was cutting his "Taking Tiger Mountain" upstairs at Island Records - and ran into Gabriel in the hall. Peter asked him to process a few portions of vocal & other tracks thru his (early) synthesizers for Lamb. Phil's drumming was traded, in kind.
I like old Genesis too but my comment is a bit offtopic. I studied sound engineering in Uni. All of the sound engineers I've seen were obese bearded dudes, You'd be like the utmost audio studio queen there. They'd drool the master tapes (ok harddrives now) to pulp.
@tuktuktok ~ *blush* Thank you for your kind words, Tuk....I will take them & string them around my neck, like pearls, along with all the other lovely compliments I have now received thanks to Mr. Steve Hackett (and his amazing "magical" guitar). To see that you appreciate some of the original english masters of the Ax (Jimmy Page, Steve Hackett) is a good sign for your generation. Keep rock going, in its purest forms...and the past will honor & enrich you, in its own turn. xo Lil
Attention, All Genesis fanatics! Supper's Ready...now on the table ! *grin*
The 6-part video series "Analysis Supper's Ready" is now up on YouTube for your viewing pleasure.
It features a HQ live radio broadcast of the famed 1973 Rainbow Theatre concert vs. the Live Box Set's Extras Disk restored 5.1 Surround Sound version..complete with historical insights by Mr. Nick Davis and Mr. Steve Hackett .
Conceptual artwork provided by: David Raphael, UK and Jim Buntinx, Belgium.
@WuSchell *amused chortle* Hell, I mispronounce stuff all over the place. Now you know why I didn't become a news anchor...but a broadcast engineer instead, dear. *sly grin* Glad you are enjoying it all, though. All my best to Germany! :-)
@WuSchell I wish I had $5 for every time someone has asked me that recently! *cheeky grin* I am planning to FLY anywhere they perform The Lamb, this upcoming tour.. (since they won't likely come to Arizona). Can't wait!
This is really fantastic, thank you for your analysis and your enthusiasm. Steve kindly wrote an introduction to one of our books (Guitars: Sounds, Chrome and Stars) and I saw him last year in London touring with his new album (which I love).
what a nice initiative ... compliments for your professionalism and competence and also because you made me relive that wonderful job! Not only for Steve (after hearing him I also started playing the guitar ... it's true) but also for the ncredibile Peter and all the others ... thank you very much!
ATTENTION: "Steve Hackett PART 2" is now up on BOTH YouTube and Vimeo !!
It contains DIRECT information from both Steve Hackett and producer/engineer Nick Davis.
*If you want to view all of the (YouTube) BLOCKED videos in the series - please to to Vimeo (dot) com and enter these search words: Leigh Harris Analysis.
Thank you for your support for the project !!! :-)
@BlobtheDog Thanks, Blob! So glad you are enjoying the series. I just received the "go-ahead" from Mr. Hackett to upload Analysis: Steve Hackett Part 2 to YouTube...which I'm doing now. If YouTube rejects it - please go to Vimeo (dot) com to see it. Enter the keywords: "Leigh Harris Analysis" :-)
Dear Leigh, just watched part two. Keep 'em coming! We had a chance to see Steve live in June and it was a great show. He's an incredibly nice fellow and I'm glad to see him getting his due.
UPDATE: **Just learned from Editing-Engineer Extraordinaire Nick Davis that he used manual trigger points on a Sony 3348 machine's internal memory to accomplish these astoundingly smooth edits - and not ProTools non-linear digital editing. AMAZING!.
Completely blown away by such miraculous audio engineering! Once again, proof that Steve has been too often underestimated, yes, even pushed back in the group's vintage history. He deserves a Medal of Honour for keeping the Genesis' true spirit alive till this very day. Cheers for this tremendous work, Lileigh!
Again, my sincere (and embarrassed) apologies for having that terrible slip-of-the-tongue moment on the title "Firth of Fifth". I've only listened and owned "Selling England by the Pound" since I was 15 (1975) ... and, can't imagine why that slipped out that way. I am truly dying a thousand-deaths, here, about this. Forgive me...
(We've had a hell of a week, here in Arizona, having to cover all the sadness of the Tucson tragedy. Being apart of the coverage has obviously taken its toll :-(
..Nice..I really like your analysis..I was never sure what was fixed and or flown in..you do a great job pointing out what was fixed..thank you..you should consider uploading your audio or recording it better for us!..
@carpetcrawler1969 - Bad news. My personal Flip HD vid cam has no input jack. Which means it eschews my cadre of Sennheiser lavs & Wheatstone board. My studio's JBL's & my old radio voice will just have to do, unfortunately. So sorry. I suppose I could get the rest of my co-workers to track everything while "filming" me & dumping it into our Avid edit bays to carve it up for you...but, then it would become a commercial venture and no longer a labor of love by a single audio engineer. ;-)
Oh..LOL!..It is still great!..I was actually looking for a nice flip video camera that has good audio quality as well..I heard the Zoom Q3 is nice but no image stabilizer..oh anyway..I am adding you to my favorites here..thank you for sharing!
@Thimme thank you so very much for all of your continued enthusiasm for this unusual project of mine, my dear. I wholeheartedly agree with you on the point of view of Steve being the only solo artist truly dedicated to creating/extending the ingenious and sophisticated sound of early Genesis. I hope that the rest of my series will help keep you all warm until the Spring Thaws in the Northern US & Great Britain, poor dears ! xoxo Leigh

JFoxman 5 months ago
LileighWhiteLilith 5 months ago
@LileighWhiteLilith ~ Why do you think I would ask ONLY YOU that question? With your obviously vast knowledge and enthusiasm, I don't know of anyone who do a fairer comparison. I'm not asking you choose which is better. THAT's unfair to both. What I am asking for is someone who doesn't have a built in bias to compare and contrast these two guitarist.
JFoxman 5 months ago
@JFoxman ~ Mmmmm. *nod of head, in acquiescence* I will take that combined compliment & gauntlet (thrown at my stiletto-wearing feet *irreverent chortle*) and hold your request for the day when I am back within reach of a recording studio ....(for I am currently caring for a gravely ill, elderly mother - near the Canadian border).
I will also try to engage the experience of a gifted guitarist to piggyback the commentary..with some technical insights, ok?
All my thanks for your request xo Lil

Thanks for the reply and acknowledgement, keep doing what you do. You're a pleasure to view and listen to Lileigh and I hope you can expand your offering into new areas as you exhaust this topic.

Thanks Lileigh! I am indeed sharing these vids on my FB page , the "Steve Hackett Appreciation Page." I believe you know me better in the FB world as Michael "Poppy" Scholes. I am, of course, giving you full credit and website info!! I love your work!! Thanks for all the great insight. You're great!! Mike
HackettSociety 5 months ago
@HackettSociety Hi, Poppy! Yes! Now I see why I've experienced such a wondrous "uptick" in new subscribers...thnx to your sharing of my "Analysis" vids with all your fellow Steve Hackett aficionados. ;-)
My sincere appreciation to both you and them ...for sending on such glowing and supportive comments.
I hope that you will send all those who also love "The Lamb", "Supper's Ready" & "Cinema Show" to my new website: LiLeighWhite(dot)com - which serves as the Home for all my Analysis vids!
LileighWhiteLilith 5 months ago
@HackettSociety - I've been working very hard on it...since so many of my subscribers have reported having a difficult time navigating through YouTube (albeit, somewhat haphazardly) to view all of the individual Analysis vids, together.
Steve always takes a (deserved) front seat in my vids...not only because of his extraordinary technical & artistic contributions to the early Genesis sound..but, because he & Nick Davis were my main informational correspondents. Both, true gentlemen. xoxo Leigh

it seems most women don't go much for progressive rock...(a real shame) ...so it's very refreshing to see that you are really into this stuff....how did you get interested in genesis , I've been a fan since '73 myself... and why the lack of interest by most women....just curious....i just recently purchased the 1970-1975 remastered box set and was blown away by the improved stereo mix and the 5.1 audio ....keep up the good work...{:)
axsisofevil 5 months ago
@axsisofevil ~ hi, Axis! I love Progressive Rock (and complex layered melodies/counter melodies..along with musical composition set in a Minor Key). I thank you for your lovely compliments..and enjoyment of my Genesis vids. I was introduced to Peter Gabriel and Genesis..when my high school boyfriend gave me a copy of Nursery Cryme. I was hooked ever since! I just don't get how other women don't get swept away by such lyrics as "Brush back your hair..and let me get to know your face/flesh!"

I wish Steve would play the Lamia solo live these days.
WakefieldTrin 7 months ago 3
@WakefieldTrin ~ I so agree, Wake. *equally downtrodden look* There is such a "3 Sirens" seductive quality to his elongated, amplifier-assisted held notes. Powerfully yearning...and "come hither" - to match Gabriel's sexually-charged lyrics... *sigh, close of eyes*
LileighWhiteLilith 5 months ago
@LileighWhiteLilith I once asked him about it and he said he'd consider it and furthered that he'd always felt that it was the most beautiful track on the album. I wish he'd use those flute like guitar sounds again, :( I think 'The Fundamentals of Brainwashing' was the last time he flirted with the sound. These days he likes to stick to many volts up his Fernandes!

Is a DVD of The Lamb show something possible with all the known available footage?
synsei1 8 months ago

LileighWhiteLilith 9 months ago
@LileighWhiteLilith ... thanks for the info ... I had been under the impression Eno did the mix. I just googled it and apparently John Burns was the producer... no engineer listed ... so I guess we have him to blame. Sorry for the bad grammar and spelling in my post, I was probably up late and sleep deprived when I wrote it. Ciao Lilith !
videocanone 9 months ago
This is great. I hope they upped him in the mix in alot of other section of the album remix too, because Eno really F'ed up the original mix of the album with Steve way down in the mix in some cases.
videocanone 9 months ago

They'd drool the master tapes (ok harddrives now) to pulp.
tuktuktok 9 months ago
@tuktuktok ~ *blush* Thank you for your kind words, Tuk....I will take them & string them around my neck, like pearls, along with all the other lovely compliments I have now received thanks to Mr. Steve Hackett (and his amazing "magical" guitar). To see that you appreciate some of the original english masters of the Ax (Jimmy Page, Steve Hackett) is a good sign for your generation. Keep rock going, in its purest forms...and the past will honor & enrich you, in its own turn. xo Lil

@WuSchell *amused chortle* Hell, I mispronounce stuff all over the place. Now you know why I didn't become a news anchor...but a broadcast engineer instead, dear. *sly grin* Glad you are enjoying it all, though. All my best to Germany! :-)

UPDATE: **Just learned from Editing-Engineer Extraordinaire Nick Davis that he used manual trigger points on a Sony 3348 machine's internal memory to accomplish these astoundingly smooth edits - and not ProTools non-linear digital editing. AMAZING!.
LileighWhiteLilith 1 year ago

@carpetcrawler1969 - Bad news. My personal Flip HD vid cam has no input jack. Which means it eschews my cadre of Sennheiser lavs & Wheatstone board. My studio's JBL's & my old radio voice will just have to do, unfortunately. So sorry. I suppose I could get the rest of my co-workers to track everything while "filming" me & dumping it into our Avid edit bays to carve it up for you...but, then it would become a commercial venture and no longer a labor of love by a single audio engineer. ;-)

@Thimme thank you so very much for all of your continued enthusiasm for this unusual project of mine, my dear. I wholeheartedly agree with you on the point of view of Steve being the only solo artist truly dedicated to creating/extending the ingenious and sophisticated sound of early Genesis.
