I was a travel agent for almost 18 years and have cruised 29 times. The best cruise of all was my first time on the elegant S/S Norway before the remodel. We had a cabin on the International deck, cabin I-048 that had heated towel racks in the bathroom and the bathroom was huge. Will never forget dancing to Big Band music in the Club International. She was so very beautiful and powerful, leaving a foamy wake behind us that just took your breath. R.I.P. Blue Lady. You were a class act.
Thanks for sharing this... I worked on the Norway for 3 years and used to love to be up on deck when we were in St. Thomas as the other ship's sailed by....
I was able to buy the door sign, and the metal insignia with an anchor that was on every door, along with my cabin orientation chart. Although I sailed on her many times, the transatlantic crossing in Sky 066 was the best trip ever. RIP you beautiful and majestic ship. There will never ever be anything like her.
Adorable! Love they way they play with horns at the end.
Its a total shame what happened to the SS Norway. Before my father's retirement, he defended a project to raise a law in UK to preserve some ships with historical value as protected monuments... like people do with buildings. Then, what happened to SS Norway or what we fear to happen to SS United States would never take place.
Its ironic that this was captured on the SOVEREIGN OF THE SEAS, the ship she competed directly with in 1988 as the worlds largest, then over took again in 1990 but lost to another white monster.
BTW, according to Rule 34 of the International Rules of the Road, one short blast on the horn actually means I am altering course to starboard, two short blasts- altering course to port. Good observation tho.
My grandmother has told me countless stories of the Norway. It's a shame as to what happened to her in the end. Alas, she was one of the greatest ships ever.
I heard the Norway's horn while sailing out of the Virgin Islands in 1982. I have a picture of the ship in the distance. What a tragic end for Norway.
i agree that it is a shame that she went to the breakers. however, she was loaded with asbestos and the cost to bring up to date with SOLAS standards was more than the cost for a new ship, sadly economics won out.
She was outdated because of the SOLAS 2010 international law coming up. A humane thing to do was to sunk her and turn her into a coral reef and a place for scuba divers to visit.
@omaehl well u do know she looks like that because she was a ocean liner in the 1960s a french ocean liner in fact she was and to me is the ss franc then noarwigen cruse lines but her & they added more decks on top and made her a cruse ship but ocean liners r better i think also those are her stacks but they were red with a big black ring on top a shame that the days of the ocean liner r over unless u count the QE2 but she is the only one left sadly :(
I think that this is an incredible ship, i took a voyage on her when she was still under the France nameplate, and it was incredible, luxurious as ever, and fast as ever! the horns were musch louder though
March 12, 2007: The Indian Supreme Court has given the Gujarat Maritime and the Pollution Board three months to advise if certain stipulations can be met for dismantling NORWAY. This is the latest in delays for a decision on the ship, which was beached on August 15, 2006. Although the court has determined that BLUE LADY cannot now be removed, the newest concern seems to be over whether 80 percent of the ten metric tons of asbestos on board can be reused or contained.
i was on the ss pride of america and we past her as she was being towed to asia out of bremerhaven and we were just coming back from sea trials... and it gave me goose bumps ...

Absolutely fantastic...Such a shame that she had to go, but, I guess, she was given a second chance, with regards to her career as the "Norway".

its terrible what they did to her, they should have restored it, and used it as a museum, or a historical cruise

Agreed. Or NCL should have followed through on their promise to refurbish her. It is sad how she ended.
