Also, the architecture was designed by the Muslims & the architecture was later on seen used in other Northern regions of Europe. So, I think your terminology of "conquer" is misleading. Don't forget, it's still half a cathedral and mosque..So Muslims should have the right to pray in it as much as the Christians can.

Im from cordoba and I dont understand why muslims cant pray in the mosque, there were fight in the past but no now! Mosque is a jewel of the muslim art like alhambra, and christians destroyed it putting a cathedral in the middle. People says that is wonderful cause there are two cultures mixed, but if it is true..why muslims cant use it?christians priers are too prouds, for them the cathdral mosque ( in cordoba everybody calls it only the mosque, but priers hate it) are only for christians..

It's really problematic though because the Spanish have this love hate relationship with the Moors. Since that the Cordoba Mosque is place of multi-religious worship, would it be possible if the Muslims and Christians can share the Mezquite - like put some kind of border to separate Muslim and Christian mass? This was what they did at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus.
Yeah, I guess so, but it's strange that it is still called the Mezquita or Mosque. It's causing a confusion and do you think the name should be changed? And are the believers in Roman paganism (if they still exist) allowed to enter the Mezquita? Then, the people of Iberia were forced to become Christians and so it was turned into a Visigothic church, then it was reconstructed as a mosque and then finally the Spanish Catholic monarchs built a cathedral in the middle of the mosque. I suppose we should leave the Mezquita to the Cathedral then.
However, I don't understand why can't a place like the Mezquita a place for two religions and that 2 communities respect each other's beliefs although praying in different sections & directions within the building? It had happened in other places - such as the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. Wouldn't it reduce the religious sensitives between the Christians & Muslims in Cordoba? I mean the Muslims aren't even allowed to build a mosque anywhere in Cordoba. So, there must be another solution to this.
While distinguishing each others' beliefs, praying in different directions and sections as well as not discriminating one another in the Mezquita, wouldn't it be a great opportunity for Christians and Muslims to learn from one another, having 2 faiths in one centre? At least let the Muslims pray in restricted numbers on specified times - say on Friday only?
No we dont need to hand it over to muslims, maybe we´ll consider a deal if all the christians churches muslims desecrated, (such as the more then 100 churches desecrated in the last 10 years in kosovo), will be hand over to us.
Okay, and then the Muslims can hand it back to the Christians; who can, in turn, hand it over to whoever worships the Romans Gods. Because, originally there was a Roman Temple there then Visigoths invaded and built a Christian Visigothic Church in the ruins of it. After that the Moors invaded and built the Mosque in this video...but then the Christians from Northern Spain invaded and built a Roman Catholic Cathedral in the remains of the Mosque, using the pieces from the remains of all three.
I know, I've been there, I've walked through the parts of the mosque, the section with the rows of columns connected by arches (by the way the lamps don't actually look like that, they look more like large deep plates, made of metal and they don't actually provide a great deal of light, it's actually rather dark in there.) and I've seen the roman catholic and visigothic sections as well.
So, the Christians need to hand this site over about as much as the Muslims need to hand over...Egypt to the non-Muslim African inhabitants of the country.

Since it was a reconstruction of the mosque we wanted to restore to its original shape, including the lamps - which are not necessary what we see today. We did extensive amount of research on the lamps around the same era/region and ended up with what you see in the video now :)

Also, the architecture was designed by the Muslims & the architecture was later on seen used in other Northern regions of Europe. So, I think your terminology of "conquer" is misleading. Don't forget, it's still half a cathedral and mosque..So Muslims should have the right to pray in it as much as the Christians can.

@bittercottoncandy When looking at the Church/Mosque of Cordoba, we see that even though it was initially a church, it was divided between the Muslims and Christians after, because both religions were being practiced in the area and both religions prayed to one god. This is why Muslims want to be allowed to share the building with the Christians today. Rather than looking at it as Muslims "invading" the building..it was mostly because ppl wanted to unite the 2 religions rather than seperate them

Sorry to disappoint you, but before the mosque, the site was the Cathedral of San Vicente de Zaragoza, which was destroyed to build the mosque. Most of the columns came from the cathedral.

SaintsClass, just to correct you, the St. Vincent Church you referred to being "destroyed" to build the grand masjid of cordova, was bought by King Abdur Rahman from the Christians.
It is widely documented by Christian Historians from past 1400 years. Read: Medieval Islamic Civilization, Josef W. Meri and Jere L. Bacharach - or any western sources you want.
FYI: by Islamic laws, a Masjid can never be built on confiscated land. The land has to be purchased in full in order to build Masjid. Thx

Im from cordoba and I dont understand why muslims cant pray in the mosque, there were fight in the past but no now! Mosque is a jewel of the muslim art like alhambra, and christians destroyed it putting a cathedral in the middle. People says that is wonderful cause there are two cultures mixed, but if it is true..why muslims cant use it?christians priers are too prouds, for them the cathdral mosque ( in cordoba everybody calls it only the mosque, but priers hate it) are only for christians..

And they want to say to anybody that the most important monument in cordoba is christian, but is not. Cathedral is only a 10% of the mosque..

@KarlMartell732 I'm afraid to say yes..It's supposed to be a chruch..when Omar ibn el khattab entered Egypt when it was a christian country under the roman invasion, persecution.He did not convert churches and syganouges and pharonic temples into mosques like the Europeans and mehmet fateh did..instead he built his own mosques....and in Islam we consider Muslims,Christians and Jews as people of the book (bible, Torah, Quran) and we have to totally respect them and never treat them bad

Well, the christians in Egypt are more like second class citizens. They can hardly even repair their churches and dozens have been killed there by muslim extremists just in the last months.
Omar Khattab prohibited the repairing of churches and made christians "dhimmis", who had to pay the jizya and were not accepted as equal to muslims. And you can see Islam´s bad treatment of minorities all over the world today. Worst in Pakistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia. And Egypt will follow.

It's really problematic though because the Spanish have this love hate relationship with the Moors. Even though Ferdinand and Isabella expelled the Moors in 1492, they still showed a great appreciation for their architecture, even choosing to be buried in Granada, next to the Alhambra. As said in "troy" even among enemies there can be mutual respect and admiration. Some of these catholic's in here need to step outside themselves and appreciate art. Even if it comes from an old enemy.

What i love about Cordoba is the mixture of so many great civilizations. Just outside the Mezquita is a Roman arc and Bridge. You have to give the Moors credit for the beautiful architecture they left behind. Andalucia would be nothing without it, but a ragged countryside.

The Cordoba Cathedral (IS a Cathedral NOT a mosque) was,1st, a Visigotic church (visigotic kings were Catholic). At the VIII cent.,by war, muslims took the city and built a mosque over the church, in 1236 the Catholic KIngs (Fernando and Isabel) took the city back and consacrated it once again. Is about time muslims make peace with history and leave it alone or, begin acting as they preach and allow christians to pray in their mosques as well, instead of prosecuting them in muslim coutries.

Since that the Cordoba Mosque is place of multi-religious worship, would it be possible if the Muslims and Christians can share the Mezquite - like put some kind of border to separate Muslim and Christian mass? This was what they did at the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus.

Yeah, I guess so, but it's strange that it is still called the Mezquita or Mosque. It's causing a confusion and do you think the name should be changed? And are the believers in Roman paganism (if they still exist) allowed to enter the Mezquita? I mean, this site was originally built as a Roman Pagan temple before it was converted to a church and a mosque and finally now a cathedral.

It was actually originally a Roman pagan temple, not a church. Then, the people of Iberia were forced to become Christians and so it was turned into a Visigothic church, then it was reconstructed as a mosque and then finally the Spanish Catholic monarchs built a cathedral in the middle of the mosque. I suppose we should leave the Mezquita to the Cathedral then.

However, I don't understand why can't a place like the Mezquita a place for two religions and that 2 communities respect each other's beliefs although praying in different sections & directions within the building? It had happened in other places - such as the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. Wouldn't it reduce the religious sensitives between the Christians & Muslims in Cordoba? I mean the Muslims aren't even allowed to build a mosque anywhere in Cordoba. So, there must be another solution to this.

While distinguishing each others' beliefs, praying in different directions and sections as well as not discriminating one another in the Mezquita, wouldn't it be a great opportunity for Christians and Muslims to learn from one another, having 2 faiths in one centre? At least let the Muslims pray in restricted numbers on specified times - say on Friday only?

Okay, and then the Muslims can hand it back to the Christians; who can, in turn, hand it over to whoever worships the Romans Gods. Because, originally there was a Roman Temple there then Visigoths invaded and built a Christian Visigothic Church in the ruins of it. After that the Moors invaded and built the Mosque in this video...but then the Christians from Northern Spain invaded and built a Roman Catholic Cathedral in the remains of the Mosque, using the pieces from the remains of all three.

I know, I've been there, I've walked through the parts of the mosque, the section with the rows of columns connected by arches (by the way the lamps don't actually look like that, they look more like large deep plates, made of metal and they don't actually provide a great deal of light, it's actually rather dark in there.) and I've seen the roman catholic and visigothic sections as well.

That's a good comment :) Thanks for noticing the details. Since it was a reconstruction of the mosque we wanted to restore to its original shape, including the lamps - which are not necessary what we see today. We did extensive amount of research on the lamps around the same era/region and ended up with what you see in the video now :)
