If you don't have to leave your room don't. Going through your house is a good way to get attacked from any direction,but if you are in your bedroom they have to go through the door to get to you but you have your gun pointed at the door and theres no chance they make it through the doorway alive.

It's amazing to see so much ignorance in the comment section. Some of the advice given wasn't exactly the best, but suggesting that someone "Go hunting" is pure ignorance.
Different circumstances call for different actions, but unless you're making sure a family member is safe I don't see any reason to leave your safe room.
Hunting around in a dark home is a good way to get shot in the back, whether you know your home or not the burglar may just get lucky.

How do you know there's just one? You could do what a lot of the comments are suggesting and find an intruder and cap him, only to be shot by his friend.

Your home doesn't have to be dark. Program the smart home system (cheap nowadays) to activate the lights when the alarm is triggered. 1st floor lights go on, 2nd floor lights go off. You're cloaked in total darkness while the intruders are lit up like a christmas tree.

I got my shotgun from my safe in my closet (the dog bought me this time) as I heard him pop the window lock and open it. 3. I racked my shotgun loudly, and rested against the door jam of my bedroom door with my childrens bedroom safely across the hallway. 4. I laid in wait, aiming down the hallway and never went "looking" for him. My wife called 911 on the cell. He never entered. PD came 30 min later

@123Bako321 some states like California and places like Washington DC have greater restrictions on what a homeowner can own (especially when it comes to handguns). Most people I know have several firearms that are used for home defense and some in addition that are used for hunting or sport. Needless to say, if they hear you break into their home, you'll be facing a homeowner that won't hesitate to put some lead into your body.

Perhaps if you have an intruder you sound the alarm have your family trained to hide in the nearest closet and to dawn safety reflective vest when they lock the closet door. If the family members are old and trained enough have them hide with a weapon in case they are found before the proper signal is given that threat is gone. Reflective vest would be a good idea too in case of fire except then you meet in a location across the street.

This home defense strategy only works if you live in a large home like what they have in the video. However, things change greatly depending on the layout and the size of your house. If you live in a small house like myself and my family, things will get done and over with in a flash, whether it's me or the robbers who end up facing their Maker.

But yes, smaller homes may be a deterrent in multiple ways. One (probably the more common): it's smaller gain for a potentially deadly action. Two (maybe rarer because unorganized criminals don't usually think this far ahead): it's tactically more difficult to execute (smaller house, less area to defend, more chance to get blown away by owner).
Bad advice... By the time you find the phone, dial 911, and play 20 questions with the operator you will be already be dead or worse.
The best thing you can do is install and subscribe to an alarm system/service. When you hear the alarm, grab your gun and go hunting. Don't stay put or hide behind the bed post. You need to limit the intruders range of motion and break their focus. Cut them off as fast as possible... use stairwell/main hall as a choke-point.

how do you unload your pistol after you loaded it? withour shooting, lets say you thought you heard sounds and you load your gun but then the sound was only your cat farting (i dont know lol) then - how do you unload?
@gkidcj With most semi autos you would release the mag and rack the slide so the round in the chamber pops out. For revolvers just open the cylinder. For pump action shotguns there's usually a little pice of metal near the trigger somewhere that you push on and that allows you to work the action continuously without having to fire.
All the gun manuals will cover this when you make your first purchase. Companies have them online as well.

My dad is an ex-Marine and raised all of his kids to handle and respect firearms. I have done the same for my children, and even my youngest (now 9 years old) has no interest in sneaking a peek at my sidearm. Why? Yep, no pistol in the nightstand drawer. But I have kept my pistol under my pillow (pointing toward the outside of the bed) and have never woken up with a sore neck or headache.
For the self-defense firearm to be effective, it needs to be IMMEDIATELY available and loaded. Don't like the nightstand, under pillow or on the floor? Fine, there are other options available. Some hang a "holster" between the mattress and boxspring, and some "mount" a hard case on the frame of the bed. In both cases, the firearm is hidden by the sheet/blanket and not easily seen by a bad guy that has violated your room.

anyone ever heard of a home security system? when someone breaks into a home, there is a very loud siren. if monitored, someone calls to confirm. if no one answers, then the monitor service calls the local cops.
i went one step further. video surveillance on all possible entry points. when my alarm goes off, i can instantly see where the intruder is on my screen overlooking our bed. plus i have an arsenal in my gun safe in the bedroom closet. i'll probably use a ps90 with FMJ rounds.
@g3tr00t3d Even something as simple as keepimg doors and windows locked will give you precious seconds to react. Granted nothing beats a security system and cameras. But you would be suprised how many home invasions are through open windows and doors.
@aqinthe that's another advantage of a home security system. when you arm it at night, it warns you of any windows or doors left open. perimeter sensors are great warning devices before the intruder gets into the house.

If you don't have to leave your room don't. Going through your house is a good way to get attacked from any direction,but if you are in your bedroom they have to go through the door to get to you but you have your gun pointed at the door and theres no chance they make it through the doorway alive.

It's amazing to see so much ignorance in the comment section. Some of the advice given wasn't exactly the best, but suggesting that someone "Go hunting" is pure ignorance.
Different circumstances call for different actions, but unless you're making sure a family member is safe I don't see any reason to leave your safe room.
Hunting around in a dark home is a good way to get shot in the back, whether you know your home or not the burglar may just get lucky.

How do you know there's just one? You could do what a lot of the comments are suggesting and find an intruder and cap him, only to be shot by his friend.
That's just one scenario, but you get the point. The only really good advice that was given in this video was (aside from gathering loved ones of course) finding a safe place and staying there.

@oldannyboy37 Most people don't have a safe room. That is, a real safe room. Absent that, any room you can freely access is one that can be accessed by an intruder. "Safe" doesn't exist.
Your home doesn't have to be dark. Program the smart home system (cheap nowadays) to activate the lights when the alarm is triggered. 1st floor lights go on, 2nd floor lights go off. You're cloaked in total darkness while the intruders are lit up like a christmas tree.

They hear a sound in the dark, grab their gun and suddenly are experts at clearing houses. They think they'll find and shoot the intruder before someone gets the drop on them. Most of them aren't even factoring in the fact that they'll be scared out of their minds.

If you're in one room you already know where you are, but you don't know where the crook or crooks are, why risk it just to save a flat screen?

This is grade-A awful advice.
The chances of weapon retention with a handgun are >30%. Even if you manage to shoot the assailant, unless you have a high-calibre handgun, the one-shot stopping power of a handgun is worlds beneath a long-gun.
Remember force continuum. Handguns are used because they're easily concealed and light to carry. If you have the option of a shotgun, take it. Just don't go taking corners blind like this idiot. Pistol-grip to minimze overall length is also advised.

These guys are, for one not actually in any danger, so they aren't rushing.
2. A shotgun is MUCH better than any pistol (even a .44MAG in my opinion).
3. Learn your house and set furniture in ways where it won't impede movement, even at night.
4. my primary weapon of choice for home defense is an Arsenal SLR-106 (5.56 NATO, can go through kevlar, and shorter than some other shotguns)
5. Pick the gun that accommodates your house (length and caliber)

I got my shotgun from my safe in my closet (the dog bought me this time) as I heard him pop the window lock and open it. 3. Most people I know have several firearms that are used for home defense and some in addition that are used for hunting or sport. Needless to say, if they hear you break into their home, you'll be facing a homeowner that won't hesitate to put some lead into your body.

Perhaps if you have an intruder you sound the alarm have your family trained to hide in the nearest closet and to dawn safety reflective vest when they lock the closet door. If the family members are old and trained enough have them hide with a weapon in case they are found before the proper signal is given that threat is gone. Reflective vest would be a good idea too in case of fire except then you meet in a location across the street.

This home defense strategy only works if you live in a large home like what they have in the video. However, things change greatly depending on the layout and the size of your house. But yes, smaller homes may be a deterrent in multiple ways. One (probably the more common): it's smaller gain for a potentially deadly action. Two (maybe rarer because unorganized criminals don't usually think this far ahead): it's tactically more difficult to execute (smaller house, less area to defend, more chance to get blown away by owner).

Bad advice... By the time you find the phone, dial 911, and play 20 questions with the operator you will be already be dead or worse.
The best thing you can do is install and subscribe to an alarm system/service. When you hear the alarm, grab your gun and go hunting. Don't stay put or hide behind the bed post. You need to limit the intruders range of motion and break their focus. Cut them off as fast as possible... use stairwell/main hall as a choke-point.

@gkidcj With most semi autos you would release the mag and rack the slide so the round in the chamber pops out. For revolvers just open the cylinder. For pump action shotguns there's usually a little pice of metal near the trigger somewhere that you push on and that allows you to work the action continuously without having to fire.
All the gun manuals will cover this when you make your first purchase. Companies have them online as well.

My dad is an ex-Marine and raised all of his kids to handle and respect firearms. For the self-defense firearm to be effective, it needs to be IMMEDIATELY available and loaded. Don't like the nightstand, under pillow or on the floor? Fine, there are other options available. Some hang a "holster" between the mattress and boxspring, and some "mount" a hard case on the frame of the bed. In both cases, the firearm is hidden by the sheet/blanket and not easily seen by a bad guy that has violated your room.

In addition to 2nd amendment there is even bigger issue with that order: the use of US Armed forces against people on the US territory violates US constitution. @Distance9240 I lived in Texas and it was great. Now I live in California and would probably get arrested if I shot someone even if they were in my house with a gun. I am pissed by how many guns are not legal in CA

@honchomike563 I don't keep my gun under my pillow. The reason is you don't want to be half asleep and shooting. If a rober is standing over you'r bed you have all ready lost the fight. I keep my guns close but unloaded.
loading the gun gives me time to become fully awake and prepare my mind for the potential threat.
Being half asleep and shooting is nothing but trouble. As long as you keep doors and windows locked you should have time to load and prepare.

anyone ever heard of a home security system? when someone breaks into a home, there is a very loud siren. if monitored, someone calls to confirm. if no one answers, then the monitor service calls the local cops.
i went one step further. video surveillance on all possible entry points. when my alarm goes off, i can instantly see where the intruder is on my screen overlooking our bed. plus i have an arsenal in my gun safe in the bedroom closet. i'll probably use a ps90 with FMJ rounds.

@g3tr00t3d Even something as simple as keepimg doors and windows locked will give you precious seconds to react. Granted nothing beats a security system and cameras. But you would be suprised how many home invasions are through open windows and doors.

@aqinthe that's another advantage of a home security system. when you arm it at night, it warns you of any windows or doors left open. perimeter sensors are great warning devices before the intruder gets into the house.

@leroy592 I agree. A dog never needs electricity and you don't have to remember to turn you'r dog on. Even a dog that is not vicious is OK as long as it barks and alerts you.

@aqinthe That's right. I prefer a German Shephard, Lab, Chow or Boxer. Rottweiler and Great Danes are intimidating, but they'll eat you out of house and home. Plus Great Danes are clumsy! Stay safe.

@leroy592 I have an Akita and an Alaskan Huskey. They do the Job. Many high capacity hand guns are illegal as well as any thing they consider an assalt rifle. You are right that criminals don't go to gun stores to buy guns legally. C.A. is also limiting the ammount of ammo that you can buy starting next year. Stay safe as well.

@aqinthe Akita and Huskey are great dogs. I didn't think of those breeds. That sucks Cali is limiting the amount of ammo you can buy. About "assault rifles" , cosmetic features is the main concern of the anti-gun people. Check out the YouTube video "Truth About Assault Rifles and AK-47 Stopping Power." Even with all these restrictions, gangsters and thugs still have these weapons and ammo. Do what you can to stay safe.
