  • I'm puzzled by the dislike's. Have your ears syringed please, thank you.

  • Is this standard tuning?

  • This bloke amazes me. Do you eckon he started with dots ?!!!

  • This is powerful beyond everything.

  • Magnifique tony Rice.

  • So sweet! amazing....

  • Tony I feel helpless in my inablity to offer the comfort and joy your music has offered to me in my times of sorrow and pain. Thinking of you now brother. Peace.

  • He is home now Mr. Rice.

  • sorry for your loss mr rice.

  • going to see ricky skaggs kentucky thunder on friday aug 26 at watseka theatre watseka illinois.

  • amazing..... why haven't i heard of him before?

  • Top guitar player! Would bee nice to see him on stage together with Tommy Emmanuel!

  • And, what a great sound he gets out of this guitar, really great.

  • What a great, mature performance. And the video-shoot has been done so well too. How inspiring the sound of a fine dreadnought can be, when it is played with craftsmanship and style. Much more interesting than the high-speed anabolic power-lifting that some Australian guitar players think is necessary to show to us.

  • stunning one of the first tunes i heard on u tube

  • I went to see Tony Rice playing in Raleigh NC in 1993. I liked his arrangements to the compositions of Gordon Lightfoot and I was, and still I am, impressed by his musical talent and guitar skills, which transcends the bluegrass and folk, and get into pure inspiration and creativity.

  • this guy is awsome player

  • The Tony Rice Unit will be playing Island in the Mountains Fest on Blannahassett Island in Marshall, NC on 08-01-2011

Google Island in the Mountains Fest and come join us on the island.

  • The guy at the end is Tim O'Brien. A very talented songwriter, singer, guitar, mandolin and banjo player in his own right. But don't blame it on him. Blame it on the producers of the film, Bluegrass Journey.

  • @TheTinman1951 my father owns a 1946 D-28 that lester flat gave my grandpa.. they used to play alot back in the day. But i get it next. i'm sporting my D-1 for now lol. Still sounds great when played right... but nothing compared to a D-28 non the less and 46

  • No, It's his 1935 Martin D-28, formerly owned by Clarence White.

  • Who is the guy at the end that nearly ruins the whole thing? I wish he would just stay out of it!

  • the balance of tone of that old Martin is absolutely ridiculous...... SN 58957.

  • @pandafuryface isn't that a santa cruz his guitar ?

  • you have to be 1 of the totally INSANE not to find this unique.... i am amazed that there are 9 dislikes..credit where it is due.. this guy is awesome..

  • GREAT DVD

  • Why would you dislike this? Makes no sense.

  • @yupaul2332 If yah think about it does, yah see that person was tainted by Justin Bieber, their for ruining his or her musical ear for at least 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the exposure time.

  • cant wait to see tony in watseka

  • So sweet the sound.

  • At 4:48

what song did he transition into?

  • stunning....

  • Tony Rice Unit comes to the Watseka Theatre Watseka Illinois on saturday may 7, 2011.

  • @rocmaven lucky

  • This song is on Tony's album titled "Unit of Measure" This actually starts of with Shenandoah, goes into Danny Boy, then back into Shenandoah. Both of which are on the album, along with many other great tunes.

  • @TheTinman1951 Unit of Measure. Cool, i definately don't have that one. Thanks

  • Does anyone know if this is on an album anywhere? I must have come here to listen to it like 200 times. I know that those 9 people must have ACCIDENTLY clicked the dislike button, so i'll let it slide! This time.

  • I met Tony in high school in Crystal River. The first time he played that D28 Martin I could listen in awe. He is the reason I wanted to play. If Larry C. were still with us, he be just as thrilled as I to see how well Tony has done.

  • I've had this in my favorites fo four years. Always great to come back to.

  • outstanding! what a beautiful rendition.

  • Genious!

  • PURE MUSIC!!! salutations from a guy who plays metal ^ ^

  • My God, I'm in heaven!

  • So beautiful.....

  • That's Clarence White's Martin. It's 1930's, a D-28. Note the size of the soundhole. Clarence played with a metal pick and ripped the hole apart, so it had to be made bigger.

  • Anybody know what model / year Tony Rice's Martin is? Thanks!

  • @TinManSixtySix It's Clarence White's, a 1930's D-28. Note the massive sound-hole. Clarence played with a metal pick and ripped the thing apart so it had to be cut bigger.

  • @peterwhoward I couldn't imagine it was Clarence White's. And it's funny because just the other day there was this Byrds song on the radio and I was thinking to myself how cool it would be to have a B-bender Tele around. But more than a Tele, I hope one day I can afford a good Martin. Wow, a vintage D-28 - sounds like a bell to me, even more in Tony's hands, of course. You're right about the soundhole, it's huge! Thanks for replying! Appreciate it!

  • Amazing feel... This guy puts them all to shame... him and Tommy Emmanuelle are the gods of pickin! I've only just discovered Tony Rice... amazing!

  • Everyone talks about Tony's talent and Genius. You can't imagine the hours and hours of practice he's spent working, learning & developing his ability and technique. His commitment to excellence is the reason he can play like he does.

That's a lesson for all of us regardless of the endeavor.

  • It is a shame there is not a love button to click on. Tony Rice pwnes all others

  • The man is brilliant!!!

  • belissimo

  • I'm lucky enough to play with Tony's son Joe, one of the best bass players in our town of Augusta, GA. I don't know the old man, but his boy is the definition of friend.

  • @nukietheAtomiczomBie just read Tony's biography...does not mention a son

  • what a precious gift .... what a precious man

  • Comment removed

  • AWESOME! Thanks Tony.

  • beautiful amazing great interpretation - like bluegrass jazz

  • is he high? pretty trippy....

  • @impala327 ur a fag dond dis tony rice

  • thats insane how does he do that

  • I love to hear Tony Rice play, he is very talented and I wish I could pick like him, but I seriously doubt that will ever happen.

  • Does anybody else hear that idiot at 1:17 shouting "just play the bloody tune"??

Hows about you get the fuck up on stage and try it then.

  • Fraid I didn't get it, I don't recognise the tune Shenandoah at all in his playing, more like one overlong boring intro

  • In a persons comments on this they mentioned that "flatpickers are boring, fingerstyle is light years ahead" To that person - please watch this again. Tony is faltpicking AND fingerpicking at the same time. Nuf said!

  • What a man and what a player. Pity about his cocaine use ruining his singing

  • @zemurph ... cocaine ... please! you don't know anything about this man! just listen! try in your feeble little mind to appreciate the precious gift he is giving you here for free on youtube!

  • Comment removed

  • @zemurph Cocaine? You must be getting your facts messed up. Tony lost his voice because of his vocal chords being damaged, not because of cocaine.

  • Oh! So that's how a guitar is played! I get it now. Breathtakingly soulful and as timeless as the mountains in which he was born. Selah.

  • @marooned123

If you could ever hear him play "Windy and Warm" like I have. You would know how good he really is.

  • One word : Elegant.

  • tony is a god when hes gone hell always be remembered

  • When you see a miracle of sweetness and beauty, just call it what it is. No need for comparison. This song is hundreds of years old. Thanks for the history lesson!

  • there's always some jackass yelling something out

  • Has anyone noticed that after 139 he changes momentarily from Shenandoah to Oh Danny Boy and plays it all the way through before switching back?

  • Yes, heard that myself. Genius is definitely intentional :-)

  • When are you touring Tony?

  • Wow!

  • - shouldnt we be calling him Dr. Rice by now?

  • There's owning a guitar and OWNING a guitar. TonySan is the later. He's responsible for getting me into newgrass & bluegrass back in the early 80's after hearing him on a college station..

  • AMAZING!

  • Man.. I'm sort of speechless. This must be the 500th time I've listened to this song. "Unit of Measure" has been in my CD player in my truck for 3 weeks straight, but it still speaks right directly to my insides every time. Amazing. HUGE Tony Rice fan here. He must have something beautiful in his soul because it comes out through his guitar.

  • absolutely sweet!!

  • It's more Guitar Workshop than Shenandoah Valley to me.

Sorry, but it just doesn't evoke the poetic feel for me.

  • @Rexicano Oooh!! You need to listen again!! This performance must surely be one of the finest and most spine-tingling, butterflies in the stomach, heart rending acts of pure beauty ever witnessed!! Go on!! Have another go!! EMBRACE!! SURRENDER!!

  • @VSHBrown

    Forget it.

I can listen to a real master of the guitar on YouTube anytime I want.

Flat pickers are boring. Fingerstyle is light years ahead.

You might see a Doctor about the butterflies...or stay off the hard drugs.

I see IBG67 seems to think a Bluegrass player can master ANY style...right.

No need for years of study to Master everything from Classical to Hiindustani music.

Proves how dumb people can be.

  • Comment removed

  • @Rexicano Goodness but you're rude!! Surely far more in the spirit of musical appreciation to simply share the name of your favourite "guitar master" so we can all enjoy him for ourselves.....if he's better than Tony Rice it would just be mean to keep him a secret!!

  • @VSHBrown

Well, to me it's rude to try to tell me I need to listen again to something I find simply awful.

And if you had the slightest bit of sense you could find out what I like by looking thru my picks at my YT site as well as the Musicians I've listed to the right of my profile; really, it's not that hard...but I think you just wanted to make a snide remark...you're not really interested.

  • @Rexicano Sorry....can't spend any more time on you....you're boring me now...

  • @VSHBrown

    Yeah right;

I KNEW you didn't want to know.

You're too lazy and stupid to find out the simple answer to your pointless questions.

You'd make a very bad Sherlock. Good Troll though.

  • @Rexicano I looked through your fav's. Very excellent musicians! Not very interesting or inspiring, but VERY good musicians ;]

  • @pickinpete

Ha, right; Miles Davis and Milton Nascimento, Jan Garbark, L. Shankar, Pierre Bensusan, Michael Hedges, Keith Jarret....

    not inspiring at all.

An International array of musicians from all over the world...and YOU call them uninspiring?

    You have a screw loose.

  • You are spot on. They all inspire in their own way. Great musicians.

  • Dude, he can really make that guitar cry.

  • I bet God is listening to that too . . . Heavenly . . Fine work Dude . . Recall seeing you at Grass Valley in the 80s . .

    Still got it . . . Still The Man . .

  • One word. Beautiful

  • He plays in almost a classical style at the beginning yet it's so subtle and beautifully crafted. Awesome song and player.

  • Absolutely remarkable! Now I've heard him tearing it up like no one's business, but this is just exquisite subtlety of the highest order.

    Thanks for a great upload(-:

  • Wow! What a touch and what a sound!.....no comment!

  • I know exactly what you mean by the "no comment" (-: Kinda leaves one appropriately speechless.

  • Comment removed

  • @BillKist

hey judge and jury, show me one video on youtube of Tony Rice not playing sober.

  • I believe you are thinking of Bela Fleck. haha

  • Wow!Looks like the Clarence White Martin with the enlarged sound hole.

  • it is the clarence white martin, the original.

  • this is just magic

  • Great guitar work!!Master!

  • Is that the Martin that belonged to Clarence White?

  • @saito125 : Yes, this is Clarence White's D28 from 1935, with an enlarged soundhole.

  • Thanks!

  • yes

  • That's simply a master who is absolutely at the top of his game . . .

  • I have had the pleasure of hearing tony rice perform at the MACC in ohio and last year they did a tribute to him he was fantastic as were the musicans who played with him..it could have filled a whole nite of music

  • have to keep coming back to hear again and again

  • Shame he is not singing. I love his voice.

  • i love tony and his music more and i have never seen him mess up but at 1,16 he gets lots for a sec

  • Only one other person I have heard play so well - Michael Hedges.

  • That guitars tone is RICH, I've never heard an acoustic sound that balanced and full, Tonys got a real gem.

  • Ha Ha ....I just thought of this, I guess you could say my comment below was,...........spoken like a true southern closed minded RICsist!! lol

  • there are 2 types of people in this world; those who love to hear Tony play and sing, and then there are those that have an idiot living inside their head that tells them NOT to like his Demigod musical genious.....and they're stupid enough to go along with the idiot that resides within.

  • How brilliant and concise is that comment at 5:05?

  • @kencollapse I'd give you more thumbsups if i could click more

  • @kencollapse Its a beautifully stated comment...at the same time it interrupts Tony's amazing performance ;)

  • truly a master

  • Well Bryan Sutton will be around for a little while. Ron Block isn't that old either. But Segovia was 94 when he played his last show. so these guys may play a little longer.

  • Lovely! Greetings to one and all from Jarrahnut in wonderful Western Australia.

  • Have you listened? Ok, now you can die.

  • the sad thing is that all of the great flat pickers (Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Norman Blake) are all getting old....enjoy them while you can..................I don't think they will be doing live performances much longer

  • There's truly nothing like enjoying a peach at sunset while listening to Tony Rice. Truly magical

  • nuttin wrong with 134

  • yes master!

  • So sweet, so heartwarming...

  • That old tony rice aint no damn good. He might be if he keeps practicing. HAHAHA! Hopefully everyone realized the joke there. In my opinion, Tony Rice is one of the finest musicians to ever grace the guitar. He can play anything in any style, but in a bluegrass context, hes a GOD.

  • @IBG67: You've got that right, buddy. I've been listening to him for a long time (20+ years), and he still amazes me.

  • that was a treat!

  • the master hands down

  • That was just something fancy he threw in there.

  • I would say that note was a little twangy there at 134.

  • That song is hard to remember where your at I think he was trying to remember where he was at in it??? maybe not I don't know anything

  • Comment removed

  • I went back and took a look again. I heard nothing wrong at 134. It appears his head shaking was because he was getting into the feeling of the choke he did. I watched Tony play live twice now and never heard him make a mistake. If he ever makes them, he's so good he covers it well...LOL.

  • Joshhopp, no he didn't mess up at 134. In fact I never heard Tony make a mistake. You'd think being human he would, but I'm yet to hear one.

  • he just seems to shake his head after something that doesn't sound too correct. could be wrong

  • Check out the otherwise awsome "Freeborn Man" video on youtube, his secong solo break.

  • nah im sure he meant to through that in there

  • Very, very cool. Tony Rice has been a guitar hero for almost four decades. What more can anyone say?

  • WOW! The man never ceases to amaze me. If you have not heard this guitar and Tony live, you have not heard bluegrass guitar to its fullest. I love the quote by Tim thrown in there. chills....

  • teddy roosevelt?

  • my 2 best friends are Clarence White Grandsons and the oldest one has the very first Clarence Whtie D28 that they made with a serial number of 00001 and it sounds so good also anyone interrested in a book about Clarence his daughter just got done writing it and i read it , its amazing

  • Would like to see Title, or Amazon link to this book!

  • Peter......this guitar is actually a Martin D28. Clarence White's 1935 D28. Tony bought it from Clarence's father in 1975. Clarence is deceased. Serial # 58957. One of a kind. There is a Santa Cruz Tony Rice model that emulates this guitar. Martin also has a "Clarence White" model with the large sound hole. But this guitar, in this video...........an original. Some would say magical.

  • You know, I should have noticed that. I've seen him only several times, but all on the West Coast at Wingergrass and I'm almost certain he doesn't bring that guitar with him. Of course, I could be wrong about that too. I agree it is magical.

  • Look at the sound hole on that thing. Talk about open.

  • He has that sound hole specially made; his guitar is Santa Cruz and cut to be like his hero Charlie White's guitar. You may know this, but if you didn't, I thought you might be interested

  • hahaha thats funny your joking right?

  • What a charming, beautiful rendition. I'd forgotten about Tony Rice but my interest is revived.

  • Tony may be the best flatpicker, and not bad at all at a little hybrid picking, not acually finger picking, he has paved the way for all other bluegrass pickers to folow, a measuring stick for all others.

If your interested in finger picking check out Tommy Emmanuel, another great , humble guy to listen to.

  • Heart & Soul How blessed we are to live in a time with such great artist. God bless you Mr. Rice

  • I saw him do rhis live- it lasted more like 10 minutes, and it was great. His phrasing and timing is still unequalled. Living in Virginia, we may apprciate it more

  • That was "Wonderful"!!!

    Appreciate the Upload

  • Beautiful version. Tony is one of the great pickers of time. Thanks for posting this.

  • Beautiful version at it's best. One of the greats of all time. I am glad to see more people comment on Tony's playing here than the nut syncopath999. Ha!

  • one of the all time great flatpickers...

  • where can I get the tabs for this wonderful piece?

    please help:)

  • I got to see Tony live once in a small venue. A master player with magic powers.

  • Tony, Beppe, Dan, Doc there is art to move the soul in them there steel strings.

  • Just checked out your profile. Apparantly you are 48. I am surprised. It appears that you may have less time to actually grow up than I thought so perhaps you had better make a start sometime soon before it is too late. It is a sign of a clear lack of intelligence and self awareness when you indulge in abusing people simply because you dislike their view about a musician that you like. I doubt if Tony rice would approve of your behaviour. He is much more mature.

  • You are a very stupid man. You can't get around the fact no matter what tactic you use. No need to comment on your playing. It's there for everyone to hear. Ha Ha... You are very stupid. Some people act stupid but, you show that you are stupid. Go to sleep so you can stop playing that awful what you call guitar playing to rest.
