@cjlewis79 There's a lot of people who hate the JP-8000. It can actually produce some very convincing analog sounds (as long as you don't overdo the fancy effects).
I think anyone who hates it sucks at making patches. Great synth.
lol. this is so fucking good. it sounds like a live verison circa 1980. brilliant mate. have you used samples for the backing track or is it all your own work?
Great cover. Can u help me. I just bought a Electric Keyboard and I want to play We are glass. do you have his music sheet or something please. I spent two days trawling the web and can't find a thing. Please Help
Excellent series. Thanks. Do you do this live? Seems there is a gap in the market for this era of pop music... punk covers and tamla etc, rock, etc but no electropop at least around where I live in MK... would love an evening out listening and jumping about to this!
Cars....great track. One of the reasons I got into synth music in the 1st place. Gary Numan has never really been given the recognition he deserves. A true pioneer! Great version btw!
please take a look at my version and when it gets to the tambourine parts this one is better with the Roland JX-8P but my keyboards don't have them sort of sounds unfortunately
dude, i just have to say that.... after a long week of hard work in the office, i just like it so much to sit down laid back with a nice littel cold bottle of becks and listen to and watch your vids. thanks a lot for the all good leisure times in front of my screen. :)
I just picked up a jx 8p and am recording into Pro Tools as well. I had a quick question about recording, do you have the "level" switch on the back of the jx 8p set to low, medium, or high when you record? All my levels are set correctly but the jx 8p still sounds somewhat harsh whereas yours sounds nice and smooth
@Trinigoth It is a common fault on those JX. Move the switch several times from L to H (or apply some contact cleaner on it). Audio is directly routed trhough that switch. Any small particle of dust can break the sound.
@Trinigoth I had the same problem. Definitely clean the switch & volume fader.I have to occasionally push that switch as far as I can towards H for it to work correctly.
three things that will help.
1.) decrease the volume settings on DCO1 or to 2. If one is at full, turn the other one down to 50%
2.) Turn down the VCA. This usually solves 90% of my problems with the JX-8P
3.) Clean the brass strip under the keys if you're aftertouch isn't working or you have to punch the keys extremely hard.
I checked out a couple of his videos and he does gets really close to the Vox Humana sound on Cars. However, I think I can get a little bit closer using my Oberheim OB-Xa. The Polymoog is such a unique instrument. (ie each preset has special built filters) that it is almost impossible to duplicate its sound exactly..
(Jessup's patch tips are good, but they aren't entirely correct. For example, I agree that Osc 1 is a sawtooth wave, but OSC 2 should be a thin pulse instead.)
I had an MS2000B then sold that, and bought a Juno 60 and an Alesis Micron SE, the Alesis is of course a VA synth, but it is amazing as far as it's capabilities.
I just watched the Cars video and could see the bassline being played at around 2:20. It looks like he's playing it the way you are, so I think I might have been wrong on that one. Oh well, that's what happens to know it all's...lol
AWESOME playing mate. I have a handful of keyboards, play a lot of G Nmn, Krftwrk & other stuff as well as my own bits & bobs. Cheers & well done again. Never mind the couple of boaring farts that are not impressed they can't do any better.
When I listen to "Cars" it sounds to me that out of the last 2 A bass line notes, the last one is played an Octave lower. D-Db-G-A-A-(A octave lower). But that would be very tricky to play with one hand.
Love your stuff. Got myself an Axiom pro keyboard and a pile of soft synths. They don't sound anywhere near as good as the real thing. I just like making noise.
Having been around when the original was on the charts, I can say you did a great job on this one. Way back then, nobody had a computer in every room, didn't have recording software that did all the work, there was no such thing as sampling or sequencing, and musicians actually had to have vision. You captured the essence of the era very well.
What sound are you using on the JP8000? I have one of those and love that board. It's my main go to board. I just sold my JX8P to pay my mortgage. Sucks. Oh well. I found a cheap JV-80 I have been messing with.
That was great, I was singin along with you, the jx8p sounds just like a polymoog ,at a fraction of the price! and more reliable, one thing, needed some reverb on the jx to make it sound more spacious, still great though!!!!
This is amazing! I love the fluorescent display on the JX-8P, I wish modern keyboards would use them -too many times I find LCD screens to have too narrow a viewing angle.

@DX5 , don't even let someone like calyx93 get a reaction out of you. Your rendition was fantastic, and this is coming from a SEASONED synth player ( 25+ ) years.
I looked at calyx93's profile, no video uploads of his/her own.
So we must assume that calyx93 doesn't make music, otherwwise chances are calyx93 would showcase it here...calyx93 is a loser that critisizes people to make him/herself feel bigger.
@calyx93 You are a prick and probably have NO skills whatsoever when it comes to playing keyboards, so go and learn how to play first then see if you can get anywhere near as good as DX5....
@calyx93 The most important thing about DX5 is that he is "out there" exposed to anonymous comments. Currently on youtube he is the best in this department (80's synth covers). Will there be others? Hopefully he will inspire others, may they be better or worse.
@calyx93 I am a huge Numan fan and I have also met him on two occasions, and I just want to say that if you think you can do better, show us what you got!!!! The boy did a brilliant job. Music is about enjoyment and you sound like a musical snob. (The types of people Numan can't stand) I am sick and tired of critics like you who like to put others down for their efforts. Numan would be proud!!!
Holy fucking shit Batman ur good!!

1- You can comment anything, in a respectful way. All tech comments are welcome.

@calyx93 Respectfully you were so envious, let the man play his stuff peacefully, he doesn't hurt anybody with 'em, does he ??
MrJhonnyjulian 1 year ago
@calyx93 You are a prick and probably have NO skills whatsoever when it comes to playing keyboards, so go and learn how to play first then see if you can get anywhere near as good as DX5....

@calyx93 The most important thing about DX5 is that he is "out there" exposed to anonymous comments. Currently on youtube he is the best in this department (80's synth covers). Will there be others? Hopefully he will inspire others, may they be better or worse.
Looking forward to check out your version!

Hey ThatBloke,
If you want to hear the Polymoog sound nailed to perfection, check out the version of Cars made by Synthpro.

Fantastic cover DX5, the Voice Humana sound from the JX8P sounds exactly like the PolyMoog. Very good work.

IT DOES NOT sound remotely like the Vox Humana .
